How to remove a shower head

This video is about how to remove a shower head. to remove a shower head, the proper wrench is needed. An adjustable wrench should do the trick. To remove a stuck shower head, try a monkey wrench or plumbers wrench which holds tighter the more you try to turn it. Once you remove the shower head, you are then able to change your shower head or clean your shower head. then simply install it with some thread tape.

I want people to stop saying it’s simple. I have the world’s most difficult shower head to remove. A wrench isn’t working. Two different types of pliers isn’t working. I’m frustrated.

Hey Amy, I certainly can empathize. A plumbers wrench would do the trick most likely. The way they are designed, the harder you turn the wrench , the more it bites - the just don’t slip like pliers can. Years of scale and water deposits can really gum up the works! Good luck.

i’ve watched multiple different videos and they’re all talking about the same thing and i tried it but i think either i’m too weak or the shower head is screwed on WAY WAY WAYYYY too tight

Hey Marive, The secret for too tight fixtures is using two plumbers wrenches going in opposite directions / one on the shower neck and one on the shower head nut. What is odd is that the shower head does not need to be on so tight. But what can happen is calcium build up making it difficult. Thx for watching.

I am trying to remove and replace a shower arm but it's really stuck. There is no way to get white vinegar to the plumbing connection without cutting a hole in the wall. Do you have any suggestions how to remove it without making a bigger hole? The builder installed the outlet above the shower surround so the hole for the arm is in the sheetrock.

Thank you so much for your clear demonstration Sir. I tried first turning only the shower head counterclockwise and it moved around but...did not make the thread above it move too so I can remove it. This is a new shower head which I want to change for a heavier water. So...it's not rusted or anything. Is there another way (other than a wrench) to remove this head? Thanks again.

Hey Adela, Sorry, but a plumbers wrench / monkey wrench on the shower head arm ( to hold it from turning ) and another on the shower head nut is the only way we know. Plumbers wrenches grip tighter as you turn them so the bite hard and turn most anything. If you find a different solution, please let us know.

Hey Blackscotian, The thread tape should not be an issue. The thread tape should only be on the threads that go INTO the shower head. The shower head itself should have a flat sided section that you’d attach an adjustable wrench to and then turn it counter-clockwise. The thread tape is pretty thin stuff. If some is in your way for some reason, you can scrape it out of your way. Hope this helps.

shower head not budging--I am afraid its going to rip the shower arm out of the wall. Are there lubricants that can dispell the seizure? Is there a way to wrap the joint in liquid wrench to loosen?

Hey Jh.., We use pb power plaster. Let is soak over night. Could also try wrapping the entire head in a large baggie of vinegar and see if that can loosen the scale. Also, we have not had issues turning the entire showerhead arm out - just replace it all. The shower head arm simple screws into a brass fitting which is hidden in the wall. If replacing that, use thread tape on the threads of the new arm. I would try a plumbers wrench / monkey wrench - they grip tight and provide a lot of leverage. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

Hey Syed, Maybe try a vice-grip pliers set. It has teeth with the ability to clamp down tight - maybe that could help turn the nut. The entire shower head - arm and head should rotate out of the stub out in the wall - another way to replace it. See around time 1:30 into the video. Hope that helps. Thx for viewing!

Hey kaden…, 1) monkey wrench / plumbers wrench clamps as you tighten - really helpful - sometimes even on rounds it will grip and dig into metal. 2) undo the shower NECK which goes into the wall - just a pipe with a bend in it (onto which the shower head is attached) - unscrews counterclockwise. Hey eggo…, About 2:00 into the video, you see a plumbers wrench or monkey wrench. They have aggressive teeth and clamp down tight as you turn. Great wrench to get a stubborn head off. At 3:45, you can see that the whole arm can be removed by turning it counter clockwise. That’s another option. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

Hey Yehovah’s..., The best way to accomplish this is to use 2 money wrenches/ plumber’s wrenches - turning them opposite each other. One goes on the shower head where it attaches to the shower arm, and the 2nd wrench goes on the shower arm. By holding the wrench on the arm still while turning the shower head with the 2nd wrench, you should have success. Monkey / plumbers wrenches work by gripping tighter the harder you pull. Great tools. The other option is to try and unscrew the shower arm and replace everything (arm and head) new. Remember to add pipe tape or sealant to the threaded parts before screwing them in. removing shower head is "easy"? sigh, how i wish it were so easy as shown in the video. mine is seized on there. i detect mineral deposits around the connection. going to have to try something else. i don't want to brute force it and damage interior piping..

Hi Charlie, white vinegar should be able to remove the mineral deposits. You could put white vinegar in a plastic bag and attach it to your shower head with a rubber band so the shower head is submerged in the white vinegar. Leave it soaking for two hours. Then remove the bag and brush the shower head with an old toothbrush. If the deposits don't come off, let it soak a couple more hours. Hope this helps, good luck!
