Extremely Advanced Doubles Strategy (Win More Tennis Matches)
1. When you’re the returner’s partner, it’s a good idea to learn to poach the server’s second shot
2. When ending the point at net, find the player closer to you so so they have less time to react

Thank you Matt Lin for allowing me to use this video: • Stanford vs Utah #1 Do...

A good point to add is, if this is matchpoint, they have a second matchpoint if they fail. The server is on the deuce side of the court. So it is either 15-40 in this game, or it is 0-6, 2-6, or 4-6 in the tie break Otherwise they wouldn't be playing on this side So they receiving team has room to take some risks
@briankronberg

The receiving side net person should be watching the opponent hitting and anticipating a poach based on their most likely, or highest percentage shot based on their body language. Especially on important points because they are most likely not trying winners, but trying to force the opponent to make an error. Poaches are especially important if you see them set up for a slice as they will float and usually be easier to pick off. This example is an obvious poach. I'd like to see you do a follow up video talking about reading the opponent's body language and shot placement to be your indicator on if you should poach. Also, I poach after the person locks eyes on the ball. Sometimes it is sneaky, sometimes it is with big gestures. I like telegraphing my poach if my opponent is not as good as it often cause an error when they see me and try to change their shot. Good video!

2 quick comments: 1. The server didn't close in with any energy. He is volleying so close to the baseline, which makes it so much easier to poach. No way to know, but if I am the returner's partner, that helps me make the decision to go. 2. Eric Butorac has a great point about the server's volley...it's not only a backhand, but it is an inside volley, so it is easier to poach. The reason is that a decision to go down the line with this volley would have to be made earlier. The reason is that going down the line on an inside volley requires an earlier contact point (the tip of the racket out in front) than going back cross court. You can change your mind and take the ball later, but it is difficult to change your mind and take the ball earlier. If the server was hitting a FH volley and planned to go crosscourt, he could change his mind in response to a poaching move and more easily play the ball up the line.

Love the concept of watching the net guy when you are at the service line with your partner returning serve. You either see their eyes get big and their feet get happy (threat) or they slowly shift their head knowing they don’t have a play on the ball as it goes to their partner. Great breakdown on the big board!

Great video, I would add that poaching is all about timing ... rule of thumb that works for me is start to move forward diagonally as soon your opponent looks down to hit the ball ... as they can't watch or see you

Could you do a video on what to do when someone hits a good drop shot to you in both singles and doubles? I feel like there are several options in terms of how to hit the ball back as well as where to hit it- so a video analyzing the best choice(s) would be great!

I would've also poached that because the return cleared the net man and went to the inside of the court, to the BH of the returner, lower percentage shot to go inside out and down the line. If the return was more to the servers alley, I probably stay put. I don't worry about down the line unless they hit it consistently.

Ryan can you go for the right angle? Or would you say that is to risky?
@543whitey

Cool. Another point is that once the ball is approaching a player, they are focused on it, which gives you a moment to move without being detected. I do that to my opponent when they are serving. Once they start the toss, I can move without being seen.

Hi, Ryan. Thanks the video. I have a question about the move of the returner's partner. While he initially stood slightly closer to the T, he next moved slightly to the left (or shifted his body weight to the left) . Then, he moved toward the center for a porch. What do you think of his intension of the first move? Showing the move to the server, so that the server assumed that he would not porch?

thanks for your comment. if the returners partner wish to mark servers partner, he would have moved to T first. i think he faked server, let him volley to the cross court.

What is the split step timing when you’re poaching?
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis Жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by poach. If you mean a true poach where you’re going across no matter what you don’t split step. If you mean see the ball go cross Court but close enough to you that you can get it the split step timing is the same as always… .20 seconds after their contact.

about the "heartbroken" comment coming from 9:25 onwards: when RP moves towards the centre, why shouldn't R move slightly left? we are beginner-intermediates and I already have this kind of agreement with my partner. He knows that on this type of ball I'm going to poach towards the centre so he is covering the ad court while I move right. the only risk if you do that is a lob, but a lob is slow enough to regroup. tell me what's wrong with my thinking

There is a 4th option that tennis player dont think about as much, but I do instinctively from my years of playing squash. It is a sharp angle hit with power back on the deuce side. This one is heading into the adjacent court or side fence, and not back to the server. I have a lot more power and control when hitting a ball coming from the deuce side back to deuce side with a sharper angle. I lose power and control when changing the direction of the ball to the ad side. This works especially if the net player sees me and is retreating, he may get a racket on my volley, Often the server has no chance of getting a racket on the deuce angle. I am sure there is a good reason why we dont see it so much in rec doubles.

It's not the recommended shot because it goes against your body weight and because you can't hit it if you are stretched and/or the ball gets behind you at all. I am not saying that it can never work, especially for you. Interestingly, I actually like to take this shot (well not this exact one because the first volley was popped up) off the court the other way, as the opposing net person's instinctive move is usually to back up and then toward the middle.

What if your volley is low ? and you have to hit up ? if you hit up at the opposing net guy, he will make you eat the ball

You are correct. First you learn the rule…then you learn the exceptions. That is an exception. That’s why I say “if you always hit to the player who’s standing where you’re standing, you’ll be right about 85% of the time.” What you’re taking about is included in the 15%.

Yes this is extremely advanced. I know it’s easy to understand. But to do this, in real time, and execute it like this, is not easy. My guess is less than 1% of players do this exact strategy when playing.

All you guys are becoming such info-mercials these days. A real turnoff. Incestuous cross promotion. Ugh. Fortunately I can control the playhead to avoid most of it. Still, is this development a sign of desperation, trying to monetize the platform, or a sign that blowing each other is really profitable? I'm betting on the former. Metrics will tell I guess.

It’s literally what most growing / big full time KZbin channels do. They take a few moments to recognize partners / sponsors. When you use their code, or click a link, it helps the channel you’re watching by showing that the sponsor’s new traffic comes from a certain channel. It’s not desperation it’s how the business works for people who make money on the platform.

Great vid as always! The “look to the net player” is something I never see opponents do. Sometimes I’ll fake them out with a feint at poaching, getting them off balance for a partner’s laser down the line. It’s great when I add a grunt and a jump. Sometimes it clears people out.

I mean all of your comments are more contrarian and negative anyway so I dont think there's a real way to satisfy you to begin with. You made this deragatory comment for no reason other than to vent your annoyance at a 5 second hinderance when you are getting tons of high quality lessons for free from Ryan. You yourself admitted you can just skip the ad easily, yet instead of focusing on the insightful advice you get you home in on parts you dislike to spew more of your hatred. There is nothing wrong with what Ryan is doing, the problem is your mindset. Feel free to debate it but i doubt you will give anything more rational than your last comment
