Extremely loud Xbox 360

I was trying to fix my E74 error by opening up my 360 (again...) after watching a video here on KZbin and following what the guy was doing. Basically re-applying thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5) to the GPU. So after applying the paste and re-attaching the heatsink, I turned it on without the fans connected just so it can 'cook' and settle in. Then I plugged in the fans and they went to, what appears to be, full speed.
As you can tell, they're pretty loud!
P.S. I won't stop there. I'm gonna try and fix this. I only had nail varnish remover (not my own BTW!) to clean off Microsoft's paste and it didn't work that well. There was still some left when I applied my Arctic Silver 5. So when I get paid I'm going to get some paste remover and re-attempt fixing my 360.

I remember this happened once, we turned it on and it got super loud so me and my friend hid behind a chair waiting for it to explode, this was around 2010 when i was 7 or so

Consoles can’t explode unless they get summered in Water since it can destroy the power supply causing to explode or catch fire but just because a console is overheating it doesn’t mean is going to explode I’ll just turn itself off to prevent hardware damage

The fans on my 360 were spinning really fast too, even on the dashboard. I left some residue of the old thermal paste on the CPU and this seems to be what was causing it as I've just taken it apart again, made sure to wipe off all of the residue with isopropyl alcohol, applied some new thermal paste (also applied more of it than I did the first time) and now my fans are quiet. Also, I've heard you shouldn't use thermal paste that contains silver because if it spills over onto the chips, it can short them due to the silver being conductive. Perhaps this is what happened with your 360.

its because the heat sinks arent securely on the board pressing it down on the chips, thats what happened to mine to, just tighten the hell out of those screws and make sure the x clamps are good

xbmxnutzzx I ended up cleaning the heat sink grease off and put new one on the cpu and that solved my overheating problem.

To remove previous thermal paste, just use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth (I use microfiber cloth. DO NOT use paper towels)

its because its been over heated so many times the fans work extra hard then you get the red rings and if theres like 2 or 4 and wont go away instead of takin it apart and ruining your warranty just send it in or return it to the place you got it

Had the same problem .. At mine it was the thermal diode controlling the fans .. It is under the plastic thing on the heatsinks .. Just clean it and it will run pretty nice again

It had the Overheating symbol of the Red Ring of Death at the end, it needs a new cooling fan to work. The first one was the Hardware Failure, which means the Xbox is dead.

It does not need a new fans the issue here is he didn't reapply the thermal paste back on the GPU correctly after he reinstalled the heatsink so the GPU was overheating so the Xbox is speeding up the fans in attempt to cool the chip the other issue was e74 known caused by bad solder joint this is easily fixable, don't comment with incorrect and stupid advice to try and sounds technical when your clearly not !

If yours is doing the same thing then something is really wrong. Unless you've opened it up and tanpered with it you should be able to get Microsoft to fix it OR if you can, take it back to the store you bought it from.

@Rawesyn Well it was over a year ago now but I believe I did what I intended to do in the video description but I also bought myself an RROD fix kit which included some thermal pads for the memory chips and some nuts & bolts to replace the X clamps.

Video posted on 24th January. It's now 31st January. I think I've let it cool down for quite a while! lol What I think the problem is is the left-over thermal paste that I left on the GPU that Microsoft had put on, as well as my Arctic Silver 5. I was using nail varnish remover to get rid of the thermal paste but it was taking forever. So I've ordered some Arcticlean. Google it. But thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

@J0eW00dy I know how much thermal paste to put on. The size of a pea. I don't really know why it was so loud. I can only assume a component was getting so hot that the fans had to work harder. Anyway, this is an old video now. I don't use this 360 anymore.
