I live in Oregon, and we go to the coast all the time. We find these newts! They're absolutely everywhere. We hold them a lot. We never really thought about them being toxic until my cousin rubbed his eye after holding one. His eye burned for the rest of the day. Poor cousin! Thanks for telling us this!

Yeah i used to catch them a lot in Pennsylvania. the newts there are slightly smaller but are smoother and have different colors. they were pretty cool, I actually ended up keeping a few as pets for a little while but released them after about a month. Luckily i was aware of them being toxic.

I'm from Washington, and here you can also find newts everywhere. I even kept some as pets once. Only they're known as rough-skinned newts, not California newts. Luckily, the first time I found them, I already knew about poisonous animals and bright colors, so I told everyone who was with me to wash their hands after we handled them.

I lived on border of Oregon and California. I went camping in the Redwoods and these guys were just floating down the river, with kids plucking them out of the water, I went to their mother and told her to make sure to have them wash their hands very well because of the toxins. I have kept these newts as pets my entire life, there have been times where we have had 18 of these little guys. These ones actually look like rough skinned newts to me, i could be wrong but the California newts typically have much oranger skin and rough skinned newts are the darker ones. Plus these redwoods are right next to Oregon which is where many rough skinned newts love, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Anyways, they’re really great pets! I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up with them!

Mckenna Reed hey! i’m assuming you know maybe some stuff about them so i’m going to ask you a question. it’s completely fine if you don’t know the answer. so, i picked up a little guy ((not sure whether it’s a newt or the other thing that looks like them)) and i then touched my phone because i did not know that they were poisonous. now, i did touch my phone and i will admit- i do eat and touch my phone at the same time. after finding this out, i washed my phone with wipes and cleaned my phone case with wipes and ran it under water. i also washed my hands with lots of soap and water before cleaning my phone and after cleaning my phone. should i wash my phone more- and if i should, do you know what i should wash it more with?

They only poison when they feel threatened and their poison has a very strong smell so you would probably smell it. Also, if you did ingest poison, I'm guessing you would've already been affected. Good thing you washed your hands and phone though just in case, but I think you're fine:)

If something is poisonous, you usually only have to worry if you ingest it. If it was a venomous newt, he'd be in trouble.

+BugPope Yep. Most people confuse venom with poison. Poison is usually only harmful when ingested, while venom can be harmful directly through contact of the skin or blood. I even heard/read drinking cobra venom is virtually harmless.

I found one of the California newts when I lived up in the mountains of northern California. I knew they were poisonous but didn't know how poisonous they were! I caught one and kept it for a few days just to analyze it and released it in the exact spot I found it. Cool to see them being featured in one of your videos!!
