EXTREMELY Rare Lighter Restoration, World War II - D-day 1944!

Restoration of a VERY RARE LIGHTER from world war II. This is a Normandy beach area metal detector ground found, with a special emblem attached to it. See me restore this war relic into a beautiful shiny working piece of history.
ABOUT THE RARE LIGHTER
This is a EXTREMELY rare and special war relic probably from the World war 2. The lighter was very worn out before the restoration. According to the donator it was found near the coast of the Utah beach in Normandy France with metal detector equipment. This is one of the beaches where the allies landed the coast at D-day June 6. 1944 - So my guess is that it has been in the ground since the days around D-day 1944.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by cleaning the emblem who was attached to the lighter. I was VERY surprised when I saw how cool this emblem looked. I guess it is an old US marine emblem from world war 1 or 2 but I am not sure. I heated the lighter to remove all the parts which were soldered to the lighter and there after I removed all tiny parts. They were very hard to remove. I guess the many years on Normandy beach in France has been harsh to it.
I sandblasted the brass body and grinded the whole lighter with 500, 1000 and 1500 grit. I polished it to mirror blank and added all the small part again.
The beautiful US marine emblem was cleaned in vinegar before it was attached to the lighter again. This is such a beautiful war relic and I hope that you enjoy this restoration video.

The symbol is the “Eagle, Globe, and Anchor” or EGA. It’s the United State’s Marine Corps symbol. After the successful completion of basic training, every marine is given their EGA.

The Eagle Globe and Ancho. USMC logo. Meant to signify “anywhere at any time”. But also throws back to the heritage of the Corp, marines were originally “infantry” aboard naval vessels(anchor).

My Dad was in the US Marines and as, was the case with many of the WWII generation, he was a heavy smoker; sadly. He's been gone 28 years and I still miss him dearly. He never had such a fancy lighter but I know he'd be very impressed with your skilled workmanship. @@johncataloni8552 actually yes, he is correct, the main Normandy landings were 5 companies with about 1 being marines and 4 army, the landing were mostly inexperienced recruits from the army because at that time the marines were mostly based in the pacific fighting the Japanese Edit:no marines, 4 army companies and one airborne division

And if you don't believe me, I am getting this information from the official marine corps university page. The only ones who did any kind of fighting in Normandy were parachuted in two months after the landings and there were only 4 of them.

Due to the design of the lighter and the Marine Emblem on it I would say that there's a good chance that this dates from World War ONE and not Two. The U.S. Marines only had a minimal participation at Normandy (Sharpshooters blowing up Mines etc.) and it could be possible that this lighter was from someone's relative from WW1 and if they were a Marine and dropped it they were part of a very very select few and it might be possible to Trace who it belonged to if they were a U.S. Marine.

One of the most rewarding & educational things I've ever watched! Brilliant work. I used to dig up all manner of treasures from old victorian era outhouse holes & dumps, etc. I never even imagined that many of the rusted up & corroded artifacts I found over the years could have been at least restored to visually pleasing or actually working order once again (not that I could have done it!). How did that last part of training go? Did it kick your ass? And did anybody tap out? Shortly after 9/11 I talked to a Marine Recruiting Officer. And he told me about the last part of basic where you pretty much gotta be training 24/7 with little to no sleep or food. Like 3 days isn't it? Damnit, I forgot what he called it

I am sure it has already been discussed to what the symbol represents. Eagle, globe, and anchor (Land, Air, and Sea) in which Marines emblem signifies. Though I am being a prior service member in the Marines, this lighter signifies the true back bone to what most mementos are made out of which is Brass. Marines' uniforms belt buckles, bells, poll ends, etc. are all made of this material. I remember shining the hell out of my brass and wow did it pop! Also, it does sure hold well in time as long as it is maintained, and this is what this lighter is made out of and will outlive anyone's lifetime. Quality!
