Oh yea love that rust converter. I would really get an air compressor with some air tools like a sander. With a air sander use a flexible pad and throw some double 00 sand paper on there and that rust will be gone fast of course a portable media blaster would work too. You do not have to replace the whole front face plate like you said, just cut off the end pieces that are rusted & replacement part end pieces and weld together. Just like replacing a quarter panel on a rusty car, you get a whole new quarter panel but only replace the rusted out part you need too, normally replace the whole thing but you do not have to. I am good at spending your money with my ideas. LOL

Love those flap discs! They do a great job of cleaning up and smoothing without the aggressiveness of a grinding disc. A cup wire wheel in a grinder like that is another handy tool to remove rust. In fact I have several of those grinders with grinding wheels, flap discs, and a cup wire wheel so that I just grab whichever grinder I need for the job at hand. Saves a lot of time when you’re in the middle of a project.

Nice to see that some work is in progress with the Bus. Just to note that the repair panels that serial-kombi sells are by their own statement e-coated or zinced. And i suggest to use the angle grinder only to rip off the thick rust bulbs. To clean the body use to blast it a glass-substrate. Sand blasting causes a lot of heat to the body and can occur - unwanted - warps and/or dents to.

to use the rust converter you should not need to grind or sand. Use a wire brush on a grinder to remove scaling a bit then paint it on. it will stop the rust dead without removing it. that is similar to the Adcoat stuff. made in FL.

The main thing I've learned from this video series is that I do not have the patience to take on a project like this. Months and months into it, CT still hasn't finished breaking down the vehicle, and that's the shorter part of the project!
@Fordman75754 жыл бұрын
I know it's an old video, but I'm a newer subscriber so I'm watching all your videos. I just have a tip for dealing with those broken bolts and screws. What I do is find a nut that the center hole will fit over the broken bolt. Then weld the nut onto the broken bolt. This does a couple things. It not only gives you a good nut to fit a socket or wrench on to remove it. The heat from welding also helps break loose the rust. Spray some PB blaster on it is a good idea too. It may take a couple times of welding nuts on them. But I've had great luck with this method. And when fixing the rust you don't need to use a complete patch panel. If it's not needed just cut the section of the repair panel that you need. Like the lower front door jamb.
@donm88565 жыл бұрын
Hey! if you have sheet metal replacement parts, you do not haft to use the entire piece. You can section them in it will give you sounder metal to work with and it will last longer. Don't get in a hurry! good body work takes time. and I agree with others on here, Get a dang air compressor. LOL

FYI CIP1 is having a sale on autocraft sheet metal. That stuff never goes on sale. All the parts for the rear of your bus that are not available at wolfsburg are 30% off. plus they have free shipping on all orders over $100. Like the engine bay supports and support for the apron. autocraft may have that shifter support too but I dont know if cip1 sells it.

if you have a welder. you can weld onto that broken bolt for the shift coupler about 1/2 inch. Build it up bout 1/2 inch then take a vise grip and try to remove the bolt. It may break off several times but it will come out. will save you a coupler!

You can collect fuel containers without any problem. Here's a tip used for welding in used fuel tanks: After thoroughly rinsing the containers to remove the liquid waste, you will inject the smoke from the exhaust of one of your vehicles through a hose into the container, letting the smoke out , and creating the circulation thereof within the container. Carbon monoxide expels the remaining gases from gasoline, preventing explosions. it is recommended to rinse again after this procedure to remove carbon monoxide residues as this gas is somewhat corrosive.

I may run into the same thing with the E-brake assembly with my 67 Bondo Condo camper bus. I would say in terms of rusted metal I thought Rusty was worse than my Bondo Condo. But after closer inspection under my bus I believe you have less rust; that should make your day...Nice work on the shift tube, I struggled with this one on my 67-13 window deluxe bus-- soaked it with PB Blast for days and in the end had to do what you just did to get it apart. My reason to pull it apart I needed pull the front beam and replace the Link & King Pins, plus replace pitman arm pin and bushing. May be a good idea to do the same on Rusty. Hey more fun and video's to share..

I tip my hat to you. By looking at all the areas that need new metal, you are close to a full frame off restoration. If i can put my two cents in: First i would take anything that can be taken off out of the van. All suspension parts and doors. That will give you more space to work. Second if you are not trying to save a part just cut them out. Third, remember that any part that you clean the rust on the front there is the same amount of rust in the back. Forth, as some said invest on a media blaster, they make a mess but they clean all the rust. and lastly you said that did not wanted to change the entire lower front, but i your restoration is going to last, you need to replace all metal and that part has the wings that go under the doors. If you patch something and there is a little rust in the neighboring part you will have rust in the new part in no time. but what do i know... Keep up the work.

This bus is really one for someone with infinite time, money and skill to di right. Watch Duckman. See how important it is to get ihefront of the bus very strong. Having rusted out metal is no way to do that. This is not like an ordinry car. You are in harms way. Something hits you and you want as much as possible in the way to save you. Having a bus held together with a wing and prayer just won't cut it. The job needs to be done properly. IMO the van was really too far gone. There is very little strength in what is left
