How have you being doing since then. Im quite new to the hobby both reading and collecting. Quite overwhelmed with watching a lot of videos where people kind go into dollar bins and pick up keys. I also am having the dilemma of should I just be picking up keys? or should I read first. I read digitally . So should I go about reading digitally and then if I like the series pick out the keys that I like and overtime I will build a wealth of knowledge of which books are keys ? and then will also have the ability to bin dive and find keys ?is that the secret?

Interesting that 2nd prints have increased value when it usually means a value drop. I had both the Batman and Robin issues, but first printing.
@robertt9342

J Garcia . I find this so weird. I get the "lower print run" argument, but to me I value the 2nd print lower than the first as the second prints to me is roughly equal to value determined from the combined print run. I guess to me it's kinda like how 1st edition books are worth more than later editions/printing.
@lindyxmjh4589
@lindyxmjh4589 6 жыл бұрын
Robert T It used to be that way with comics. Back when these books were actually released, having the first first printing was the highest of demand and secondary printings were reserved for random grab bags you could buy at Toys R Us or the supermarket. But now because people see them as rare variants and few people collected them back in the day, it just adds up and makes them worth much much more to today's collector.

Don't worry, you're not missing out on any value. Whoever posted this video does not know what they're talking about. Please see the post I just left in response to this silly video. Newsstand copies, especially from the 90s, are not worth what some misguided sellers think they are.
@Deephouse_Gent66
@Deephouse_Gent66 4 жыл бұрын
@@robertt9342 Your way of thinking about comics is CORRECT. Whoever posted this video is under a misconception that 'newsstand' copies are automatically worth more b/c of their lower print run, making them 'rarer.' But this is not necessarily true, especially with books from the 90s. Please see my recent post on here explaining the misconception of newsstand copies.

Justin Jones I would just like to say I totally agree with your statement, what’s wrong with just collecting comics for the enjoyment instead of now having antiques dealers even getting in on the act pushing up prices cause your comic has a different bar code.

Lennox Braithwaite . Most of this is built on speculation and gold rush mentality. It requires the recruitment and indoctrination of new blood. Eventually there will be a hard limit, and if superheroes fall out of favor, a decline leading to collapse of the non-collectible titles.

I wasn't a skater, but pegged my jeans and rolled them up so my neon blue socks with my red high-top chucks unlaced were on full display. Girbaud jeans were the best for this, as they kind of tapered from baggy to a relatively slim ankle. Anybody remember wearing those really long and baggy button-up Ralph Lauren Polo shirts (a print or a madras pattern) worn out so they reached mid-thigh?

Channel ZERO the Spider-Man gold book isn’t worth that much. On a good day you might get $15 for it, if it’s in PERFECT condition you might get $40 if you wait long enough. If you get it graded and it comes back 9.8 you could get $100. Signed, maybe $100 more. Personalized signed? That’s not the best thing unless you find someone with deep pockets who is also named channel zero. Thanks for subscribing. Not sure if you mean to the app or to the channel or both. If you log your key issues into the app and reach out to me I can tell you what’s going on. I’ll look into personalized signed books too. That’s a good question. One more thing, I think it is a good time to sell if you have some of the secondary keys of a character like Venom. Amazing spider man 298 299 316. Lethal protector. Valiant it’s a really good time to sell. Sega assuming it’s sonic might soon be time to sell if the movie hype is any good when they start marketing. You can email me through the app if you want me to take a look at your collection after you go through it. Tap Menu and you’ll see my contact info

Now I'm about to read Batman 457, to see Tim Drake as Batman for the first time. I haven't looked at these comics in years, but they hold up surprisingly well (especially the ones written by Marv Wolfman.)

@KeyCollectorComics
@KeyCollectorComics 6 жыл бұрын
Channel ZERO that’s a very difficult question to answer because it’s so broad. First of all it depends on what you have and what condition it’s in because if it’s only common issues without significance chances are there isn’t going to ever be a market for them. This is a crazy time for all of this because what is a dollar book today is a $100 book tomorrow and a $5 Issue the next day. So if you have valuable collectibles are you in need of that money? That’s a rhetorical question. If so, then yes now would be a good time to sell, get your books graded and start putting them on eBay. If you’re not in dire straits, waiting another 30 years would be the best case scenario. The movies aren’t going away for a long time, especially with the success they’re having, the talent the movies are attracting and the advent of streaming media needing source material. I believe there will be a lot of dollars trading hands in the smaller press independent realm soon. We’re already seeing these properties getting optioned left and right: gideon falls, body bags and a few ones coming up I haven’t been green lit to talk about yet BUT Key Collector Comics subscribers will get the key alerts before media does. Yes that was a plug. And true at that. The bottom line is if you can wait then wait because everyday these books are dying They get lost, tossed, destroyed by fire, water, kids, puppies. Speaking of kids, tomorrow’s nostalgia is definitely being built today. Look at what a lot people, comic book hobbyists in particular, start doing in their 30s and 40s. Once they have a level of success they become the largest demo of dollars spent on Comics. I don’t mean the highest average sale but collectively the biggest spending group. So the kids that are obsessed with infinity wars or avengers today will be looking to reclaim that part of their childhood 20 years from now even if the movies bottom out. Guys my age went through the worst emotional rollercoaster in the 90s when the comic market saturated and crashed but they came back and are still trickling in. I’m sure that was way more than you cared to read but hey, when given the stage...

CGC census numbers are pretty messed up because they don't always break out issues with newsstand variants. There are many cases in which they label both versions but do not even specify a difference. It is difficult to determine whether a newsstand version is "rare" by using CGC census numbers. Even if there are significant differences between the newsstand version and the direct market version - early Image comics come to mind with Shadowhawk having a foil cover and a 2.50 cover price, and the newsstand version having a regular cover and a 1.95 cover price. The biggest reason that these UPC versions are rare is because of the minimal print runs they have - something I don't think you've touched upon in your video. In most estimates, the newsstand version is only 10 percent of the entire print run. Second, third and fourth printings are even more scarce because of this "allocation" problem. It would be very informative for your subscribers if you were to research the newsstand numbers for Image comics. It is even more rare to find newsstand versions of those books.

dashrendar99 thanks for the comment. It’s not my model to communicate scarcity via the app but to help collectors identify what is valuable. Those might be scarce issues but also they had massive print runs during that time and the characters, for the most part, don’t have the popularity that Spawn (a valuable newsstand variant) might have. The market determines the value in my opinion but I’m always willing to reconsider or look further into anything I might have overlooked. You can email me at nick@keycollectorcomics.com if you’d like to discuss further. Thanks for your comment!

Don't listen to this fool. The Walking Dead from 1989 is from Aircel comics, written and drawn by Jim Somerville. Issue #1 sells for $25-$50 in NM. There was #1-#4 and a "Special Edition" that came out in 1990. Issues #2 & #4 sell for $25 in NM issue #3 sells for $80 in NM. The Special Edition? Not so special after all, only sells for $4.00.

I would be surprised if these small differences in covers will result in long term value. Real value comes from the rarity of old comics that survived WW2 paper drives or just the treating of comics as entertainment and not an investment. First issues, First appearances, key altering events are more likely to have value.

@Deephouse_Gent66

Whoever posted this video knows very little about true value when it comes to comics. I am not an 'industry insider' or anything like that, but I have collected comics since I was 11; I'm 54 now. The Superman, Batman and Robin issues can easily be found in regular back issue bins for $5-to-$7 bucks a pop in good condition, and the McFarland Spiderman can be purchased for $20 or so, though some retailers may try and jack the cost up to make profit. The misconception here is that some sellers believe that the 'newsstand' copies of a comic are worth more because newsstands haven't existed since the mid 90s (at least in Chicago), and retail stores that once sold newsstand copies (like Jewels or Walgreens) haven't done so in at least a couple decades, so technically, newsstand copies are 'rare,' and because they're rare, some thirsty retailers think they are worth money. Some of them do hold significant value if they're from the 80s and earlier. Newsstand copies from the 90s--just like MOST comics from the 90s and beyond-- are largely worthless, or they're equal in value to the current-day cover price of a comic. But I swear on all that's holy, you will not be able to finance a home, a car, your college education, or your retirement on any of the 4 worthless comics discussed in this preposterous post. Get a buyers guide and look these books up for yourself, or talk to your local comic shop dealer. Get a second and third opinion if you like. You will find that these four books are worth no more than $40 bucks or so TOTAL! It pisses me off when speculators who know nothing put this kind of misinformation out here
@KeyCollectorComics
@KeyCollectorComics 4 жыл бұрын
It's true that the newsstand versions of these issues are easily found and not worth much. Most newsstand issues from the nineties are aren't worth the extra money that online sellers try to push them for and really you only see newsstand start to pick up value in the 2000s....later 2000s especially. The nuance that you missed (probably while you were writing this comment) is that these are second print newsstands and are incredibly scarce. Take Batman #457. There are two bar code versions, the standard newsstand and the second printing version which can be identified by the banner on top that says "new robin issue". There is also a non-newsstand with the bat logo in the UPC that has the same banner but it is not scarce. Also a few numbering error editions that some consider rare but not compared to the second print NS. I know....its a lot to take in!!!! A newsstand 2nd print 9.6 sold in May 2020 for $2,150 on eBay. There is only 1 9.8 that has been graded by CGC vs 262 copies graded 9.8 of the standard edition *** Spider-Man #1 UPC gold edition has quite a few more 9.8s graded at 247 copies but the standard cover has over 4k graded copies. This version was ONLY distributed to Wal-Mart stores. The other two are just as scarce. This is all covered in the video if you want to rewatch it or download Key Collector Comics and all the things you might be passing up will be easily identifiable for you. There are a lot of inaccuracies in your comment. Newsstands from the 80s are no more valuable than their direct edition counterparts becaus they were both produced in large quantities. Many comics from the 90s ARE worthless, the ones that were printed in excess but there are a great deal of valuable hidden gems and not-so-hidden gems but classic characters that were created during that time. If you don't believe me, just do a google search for second print newsstands of the issues mentioned

Deephouse Gent for the category of newsstand second printings they are unique but there’s quite a lot of highly collectible oddities in smaller quantities of comics. DC Universe logo reprints are good examples. Some are dollar bin books but there are a handful that range from $20-$200. Anything that presents a challenge, there’s a niche that’ll go to extremes

What a JOKE this silly video is! Please peep my extended response to this video post.

@@KeyCollectorComics not saying that they don't sell for decent prices on eBay but the regular collectors don't really care about them, at the cons if you do see them most of the dealers will tell you that they don't sell, they are just over hyped books that only sell on eBay to collectors who want every variant of every book ever made, I have the Batman 457, and the robin 1, have taken them to a ton of cons and nobody has ever cared about them. Lionel Jones I would think that the average convention goer is more interested in getting as many comics possible for the least amount of money, so it's unlikely anyone is going to randomly drop $1500 on a single random Batman variant from almost three decades ago.

Not worth the price tag on classic comics done on flimsy, putrid- smelling newsprint. Better to invest the money in the higher quality scroll script paper that was introduced circa the mid 1980s & became the standard norm in 1990s - 2003. Computer digital graphics virtually trounced over hands-on art shortly after which I think negatively denominated the color graph nostalgia arts industry.

@KeyCollectorComics
@KeyCollectorComics 6 жыл бұрын
They're scarce. There were less printed with the bar code as the era of the newsstand comic (comics sold at grocery stores, toy stores, convenient stores, etc) was coming to an end. The majority of newsstand comics sold at the time oftentimes did not go home with someone who would put it in a bag with a board.
@KeyCollectorComics
@KeyCollectorComics 6 жыл бұрын
couple that with the fact that there were simply less of the bar code versions printed because there was a massive shift in how comics were being sold since the direct market (comic shop copies - the covers that have a symbol in it instead of a bar code) became more relevant
