Its not 'Hell Level' at all!!! I think you run the danger of putting people off from giving this a try is you say that. Confidence is key to all handicrafts and so long as you know which end of an iron is which and are aware you can easily lift the tracks if you absolutely _baste_ the contacts then you will be fine. These genuine MS boards are surprisingly well made with plenty (too much when it comes to the GND plane!) of internal heat-sinking and everything is solder-masked. Plus... You lift a pad? Big deal. Epoxy it back down and rework from further down the track--happy days! I wouldn't perhaps say this was an ideal project for someone with absolutely zero experience but it certainly isn't 'hard' either. I think the trickiest part for many people is going to be dismantling the case without breaking it. I know I certainly lost my temper with the side-bars and ended up yanking the catches off one of them when brute-force-and-ignorance made an appearance! Make sure you have enough light, make sure you can see each contact well--through a magnifier if necessary--and take your time. You'll be back-clicking before you know it!

@@morelenmir I think this is true but how many kids is he potentially preventing screwing up their controllers because they are attempting this? I would know, I fried a few boards before I got the hang of soldering as a kid. I guess the alternative is to state firmly that it should be undertaken ONLY after a decent bit of practice on something like a breadboard.

One helpful tip before installing the modified back case to your Xbox controller: in your original back case there are two little rubber pads glued in a position under the RT and LT cut-outs in the original back case. You need to remove them carefully and transfer them to your new back case, otherwise when you press the triggers (LT& RT), they will loudly click ( because plastic on plastic ). The little rubber pads prevent the triggers to make direct contact with your back case👍🏻
@CraigsChannel3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that after doing the kit. I'm fitting digital triggers so doesn't bother me, but for anybody who's leaving the triggers they should do as you mentioned
@xepicly3 жыл бұрын
@@CraigsChannel I swapped the rubber pads after the modification, it would be 10x easier to do it when the controller is taken apart but also doable when u already built it together but it’s tricky. When it comes to making the connections to the overlay strips; I would prepare each contact point on the original board and the ribbon beforehand with a flux pen. This really makes all the difference in the world and you will likely find for most of the contacts you do not even need to add fresh solder. If you _do_ want to add a little then I would recommend a much finer grade than the fellow used here. I personally like ~0.25mm for this kind of pseudo-SMT work but 0.5mm would do in a pinch. Another tip when it comes to the type of solder--if you have any 'ChipQuik' in your toolkit I would advise using this instead of standard 60/40. It will require around a third as much heat and therefore expose the board and ribbon to much less thermal stress. If not then leaded solder is always far, far superior to lead-free rubbish. It is not that easy to get hold of these days but will melt about 50-100 degrees cooler than lead-free and therefore once again expose the components to less heat. If you absolutely _have_ no choice but to use lead-free it will typically melt at around 400-425 degrees centigrade so it is absolutely *VITAL* you only apply the iron for the absolutely shortest amount of time possible for each joint. What few written instructions exist for this mod mention only keeping the iron on the contacts for a maximum of '1 second'. That is rather fanciful, especially when it comes to the ground plane connections. However at lead-free temperatures the tracks and points really will come away from the board *very* easily indeed. If that were to happen it would not be the absolute end of the world but you would have a pretty fiddly repair job in front of you requiring quite a bit of finesse with the iron before you can try to remake the mod connections. Its always best to get it right the first time when it comes to reworking modern re-flowed boards. All in all this is a really nice and easy hobbyist project. Anyone with basic electronics experience will have no problem at all. I have coming up on fifty years under my belt playing with electronics and the hardest thing I found was fiddling with the ribbon edge-connector latches! They are absolutely _always_ a pain in the neck no matter what your project might be!!! The most important thing is confidence and to make sure you have sufficient light and magnification to see your work piece. After that the jobs a good'un!

This video tutorial was good but the Torx screws are not the ones for the back buttons. Those are replacements for the existing smaller oem silver torx screws. This looks like a pretty good upgrade from the Lofty Remap kit for the One S/X controller. Mainly because of the extra buttons and the fact that there is a physical switch under the controller. The capacitive touch pad on the Lofty kit is frustrating because it's too easy to accidentally engage remap mode during use.
@CraigsChannel3 жыл бұрын
I never tried the old one but this one like you say is really good with the switch for remap mode, my second one I did was a little stiff but think it's because the kits brand new and tbh I only need to map the buttons once

@@CraigsChannel Yeah it's definitely something you rarely need to activate. On my Night Ops controller which I installed the old kit on, I had to relocate the touch panel to the right side of the chat pad connector, opposite from the headphone jack. I installed one of these kits yesterday and all was working fine until about 24 hours later where my Y button started registering random presses and getting held down on its own. Took apart the controller and used the tester board on it again. Everything lights up still. No issue with Y button being stuck or pressed when ribbon cable to back buttons is removed. Seems to be some sort of faulty connection between the button board and the rest of the installation. As it works fine as a standard controller when I unplug the ribbon cable. (indicating the controller itself is NOT faulty) I did super clean job on all the soldering and made sure that I removed all traces of flux using isopropyl alcohol cus I know from experience even the non-corrosive stuff will still corrode things pretty nastily. Not sure what to do now though. I can get it to work by fiddling with the ribbon cable but it only lasts like 30 seconds before it starts playing up again. Really don't want to desolder the whole thing and resolder another kit on if it's not the issue. Seems to be an issue with the button board but I have no way of telling.

Could i leave the motors out & the controller function fully just without motors? Including the ones under the trigger? To achieve a lighter controller?

I thought I did everything right but the testing board lit up only some of the points. I re-soldered the board didn’t light up at all. I put the controller back together and the original buttons work but k1-k4 don’t. Any idea what I did wrong?
@CraigsChannel2 жыл бұрын
You need to make sure all the lights on the board light up

Bro you forgot to mention to use a micro tip for the soldering iron, impossible to solder those tiny spots with a standard sized tip ☠️☠️☠️

So my only solder points not lighting up are all on the second strip of points, like l3, r3 and all of those, the points are all fine so I don’t know what the issue is. I put it together and it wouldn’t really remap or it would map to the wrong button, any help? It makes me think it’s just not connected to that whole set of points or something

U didn't need to remove those wires just a couple more screws the vibro motoers come out and so do the triggers
@ExtremeRate Жыл бұрын
Yes but remove the wires will help you solder the flex easier

Do you also have smaller buttons I can use instead? Or can the k1 small button go on the k2 button?

We tested different sizes of the K buttons and found those are the best ones

I'm wondering the same thing.

@@infinitepower5121 They released an updated video that says 350-360° C (roughly 660-680° F). I set mine to 650° F, which is what I use for guitar electronics, and it worked fine!
