"Fry scream isn't supposed to be loud." And that was what I needed to hear.
@ExtremeVocalInstitute4 жыл бұрын
It’s going to be different for each individual and you CAN project it but inherently the sound isn’t perceived as loud because it isn’t nearly as full as the false cord counterpart. For most people it will sit right at or just below speaking level if done with good technique 😊

"The fry scream isn't supposed to be loud." As a 17+ year, classically-trained opera singer who has also branched into harsh vocals, thank you for mentioning this. My fry scream is pretty small compared to my operatic clean vocals, but in a mic, it's brutal sounding!
@jesusjimenez6755 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it isn't supposed to be because you're doing it with almost closed vocal chords, as with false chord your vocal chords are open so obv that one is louder.

I can relate to your comment, friend. I am 40+ years in age, and classically trained in my younger years. I believed that Opera was the BEST and ONLY kind of voice to strive for , even though I was (and am) Punk-Metal-Goth through and through. If I had stuck with my training and teachers, I think I would've found that I was limiting myself by thinking everything had to be loud with maximum projection in order to reach those semi- Contra-Tenor notes...oh well. When I started screaming a few months ago, I just did Corey Taylor from the Iowa record. If you don't know, he didn't use either of these techniques. He, instead, yelled and added the distortion through strain and power. It sounds brutal and is one of my favorite all time records, but obviously, it's awful for your voice. Luckily he learned how to do it properly and saved his voice, but it sucks that screams that brutal cannot be achieved without heavy sacrifice. I've been trying to learn how to do it properly and this has to be the most informative piece of cinematic literature I've found on this. Thank you sir

Your videos are all so helpful! This is way better for how to learn to properly scream than most videos. I really appreciate these. People say that taking lessons or probably learning how to scream from metal is wrong but I fully disagree. Safety is essential so when practicing vocals so the most important thing is to be safe and not hurt yourself. An original sounding voice will happen once you find your safe base tone.

We encourage all of our students to find their own sound right out of the gate and not to worry about sounding like “x” vocalist or “y” vocalist. Emulation is cool and a good tool to have but in order to do so you have to have knowledge over overtones and how to shape your body/voice to match whoever it is you’re trying to emulate. But at the end of the day, you’re going to sound like you and we want to help people get there in as safe and sustainable of a way as possible!

Thank you for the elaborate descriptions of dirty vocals. I started learning vox in high school from bands like Six Feet Under but never really took it serious and practiced with dedication. Within the last 7 years I've started writing lyrics with my guitar parts and developed a really solid arsenal of screams but the biggest problem I had until recently was the misconception of muscling through screams and compensating my lack of knowledge and technique with force. I've recently been putting some serious thought into the How but was never 100% certain my theories were well founded or not and if the vocals I was hearing was the way to do both clean/dirty vocals both. I can now lay those questions to rest once and for all and commit 100% to a course of action with this knowledge. Thanks bro
@christiancooper4783 жыл бұрын
You know throat singing? I learned that, and honestly regret it because i use that technique to scream, its the oscillation of whatever works the throat singing thing, id say its an overtone or something? Like three days grace’s never too late, i know the vocals are layered, but its the overtone in layered voice when he sings “now and again we try to stay alive, maybe we’ll turn it all around ‘cause its never too late” thats what i hear with the vibrations in my skull to my ears. Ive used that technique for so long, but using the throat singing technique, its made it harder to sing louder with a cleaner voice, it just slips in. Another example but as an undertone is zander reese’s song mirrors. Hes got more voice than the tight distortion like i have. Idk its weird, im not sure how to lose the sound when i try to sing louder and cleaner, it just doesnt work for me because I learned that one technique and I’ve adapted to it and now i just yell like that.
@christiancooper4783 жыл бұрын
So just imagine throat singing, make it louder and harder, i guess. Thats the simplest way of explaining it, not sure why i had to make a whole 10 page story haha.
@crazydave67694 жыл бұрын
I would say the easiest way to teach a fry scream is to remember when you would play like dinosaurs with your friends or any other animal type game with your friends when you were younger and to just kinda open up your throat like you kinda nasal it and to just undo that and this is assuming you did play dinosaur when you were younger.

-thank you for posting this great vid. i am a vocalist myself, and it took me almost a decade of my life to learn how to use my "head voice"--and I DON'T mean falsetto, as they are 2 different areas of the vocal cords--in a way that sounded more controlled, and intentional, instead of sounding and/or feeling "weak". and, since my earliest "vocal heroes", let's call them, were from rock and metal bands, I wrongly believed that almost EVERYTHING they put down on tape or vinyl for us to listen to was a combination of their chest voice(s), amazing range(s), and pure brute force...sometimes, that can be said to be partially true, but great vocalists are almost always using a combination of the techniques that you are kind enough to explain here. This is true for the most metal of metal dudes--I'm thinking of the singer from The Black Dahlia murder for some reason, to true genre-defying geniuses like Mike Patton. I don't mean to say that everyone is "consciously" using the stuff you are talking about, but it can help your craft (and your throat) if you DO think a little bit and then practice using a lot of the stuff I saw here. Not to mention, having a great mic and using it properly is very much key! Cheerz, and thanx \m/

Awesome info dude!!! I've been screaming on and off for a couple of years, and just recently started kinda understanding the fry scream on a "sensitive" manner, I mean, I understand the feeling, although, I haven't been able to mix both fry and false chord, I mean, I feel that one kinda makes me regress on the other, I haven't been able to find balance, although I must say as well I don't practice that much, I maybe do it a couple of days a week, and then for an entire week or two I won't do it.
@ExtremeVocalInstitute4 жыл бұрын
Finding that balance takes a lot of time and a lot of practice. So, as you’ve said, you may have found your own vice! Mixing is something that we definitely talk about later with students once they’re capable of developing sounds more consistently so that the muscle memory is there and you don’t have that sort of regression. Just keep at it! Practice makes progress 😊

I’m watching this on my porch and when you did the fry scream, you started a squirrel off in my tree. He won’t shut up now.
