I get the distinct feeling that, in a flying city on the brink of the apocalypse, Travis created Cerrit and his family as a race who have an innate, non-magical flying speed to give them an escape route in case, say, all magic in Avalir gets nullified and several thousand tonnes of city and mountain peak drops out of the sky.

I think he’s going to send his kids off to their mother with the stones (which even then only gives a 30% chance of not dying in the calamity lol). I would guess that Cerrit rejoins for the final battle. If things go south he could easily fly away and just go be a dad over protecting his friends.

It is actually very sweet and wholesome how despite being in an obviously morbid place, inspecting a dead body he just killed, he still took the time to entertain his kid. Like, "Yes, what I'm doing is significantly more important... But being a good dad is always first priority." He seems the type of guy who has seen and faced the worst, and despite the darkness that he has battled, he still managed to maintain the light within, and make sure none of it comes back with him to his home.
