Let's test the battery life, performance, and power efficiency of Exynos 2400 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. I used two Samsung Galaxy S24 phones, one from Canada (Snapdragon), and another from Austria (Exynos). The test is conducted AFTER the February updates for Galaxy phones.
The test includes Light performance mode, standard mode, power saving mode, and 5G. I also tested CPU throttling.

Samsung in general isn't good at manufacturing chipsets when qualqum depended on them to make their "888" and "8 Gen 1", they both were less efficient that the 865 and to conform that the "8 Gen 1+" manufactured by TSMC was much more efficient that the 8 Gen 1

@@amoorxd5432I didn't even know that Samsung made the 8 gen 1 and 888. That explains why I sold my Oppo find X5 pro after 6 months, it was constantly throttling and struggling with its 4h screen on time. Bought an s23u which I'm still rocking after 1 year.

@alexandruciordas4941 Idiot. If you actually go to their subreddit it has plenty of negative comments. Also since most haven't used snapdragon side by side, they will have no comparison to make so don't know how worse it is. And it was pretty much known that samsung exynos won't be as efficient since tsmc has been gold standard now. You can't catch up so easily. And exynos problem was never lag. It's battery life.

I have s24+ i was confused before bringing it because i know how bad Exynos are , i said let's give it a second chance espacily when i saw some videos for the phone performing very good in camera and heating, now i completed one month of using it , the most thing i have noticed is the signal it's not good like SD but, honestly it's small diference about 5% or 10% worse but you will be noticed that especially when you are working in a remote area or driving in a high way . phone performance is good not laggy or slow . heating in the phone i am using clear case from samsung i didn't face any noticeable heating issue at all only it's getting warm when playing some games like pubg i can call it normal heat you still can use your phone , in general usage thers is no heating issue at all even if using the phone outside under sun light . battery life is good completing one day with full charge without problems. Finally , i would like to say for everyone thinking of getting exynos this year if you found very good offer get it if not don't get it especially if you are using your phone for 3 or 4 years

Because the vast majority of people buying smartphones don't check performance tests, mosts don't even know (or care) what kind of processor their device uses. Approach ten random Samsung phone users in the street and ask them what a Snapdragon is, I bet eight will think it's some kind of small aggressive dog breed. Samsung sells worse phones at higher prices in the rest of the world compared to the US because *it can*. People still buy it. Companies really only change their behaviour if punished by customers with lower sales, leading to losses in profit. As long as they can slap their cheap in-house processor in a phone and it still sells like hot cakes, there is zero incentive for them to change.

Again, it was a great and well-prepared test, it is truly admirable that you are doing so much work to help people make decisions at a time when Exynos has question marks... If Samsung wants to prove that Exynos is good, it can prove it with the S24 FE, not with very expensive flagship phones! Battery consumption is still problematic and even though it's winter, it's hot, I don't even want to think about what could happen in the summer! For the S24+ Exynos, I did a few tests to determine battery drain depending on the type of mobile network. Also checked the use of 1 or 2 sim. In all cases, the phone is connected to wifi and not in use. Got the following battery usage results: 1) 2 sim, network type one 3g, the other 4g - consumption 2.0% per hour 2) 2 sim, network type of both 4g - consumption 0.8% per hour 3) 2 sim, network type of both 3g - consumption 1.8% per hour 4) 1 sim, 3g network type - consumption 0.5% per hour As a result, we have obscenely high battery consumption with 3g network type when 2 sims are used.

hi @@techmo2020! At 6:02 , although you toggled the option for 'limit apps and home screen', you didn't turn on the power saving mode at the very top of the screen back again. That's why it didn't show any meaningful difference in the charts with this very aggressive power saving feature toggled. In other words, you customized how the power saving mode works by toggling the apps and home screen limitation, but the power saving mode itself wasn't on for the tests in this video. Maybe you could do this part again on a whole new video, also exploring the additional limits when power saving is on.

@@alex-coelho hi, I actually went through my footage again now, and even though it is cut in this video, I made sure that the power saving mode was actually on. Since I was in the setting and my name was visible, I cut that part of the video. To be fair it showed 3% less battery consumption on power saving mode, but my tests were not targeting full CPU utilization and the use of 120fps screen, most of them were stationary which means the screen was already on a lower refresh rate, hence the difference was minimal.

@@techmo2020 Thanks for the clarification! I still find it weird that, on the video, the home screen didn't change to black with the fewer limited apps allowed to run (which would also impact the tests if the one used in the video wasn't set up to be among the eight-ish or so). At least on mine it does change to that after toggling apps and home screen and turning power saving mode on at the top of the screen

If you dive this deep, then why not mentioning that core architecture of both is not the same this year. In theory Exynos 2400 should be ahead in low power tasks regarding battery. But competition is always good - imagine there would be only Qualcomm ...

Great video. Seems Samsung still has a lot of work to do to come close to Snapdragon. As for lite mode. I tried it for about a day after getting my S24 Ultra, then switched back to normal mode, as I just didn't like the feel of it. Battery life is still great whether I use it or not, so I don't really need it.

I'm considering waiting another year or purchasing a different product. I opted against the ultra version as it seems unnecessary to me, and personally, I didn't like its design. Being a developer myself, I understand the effort you put into developing the app and charts. Keep up the excellent work! Thank you for your candid review; it prevented me from being deceived by Samsung.

I wonder, is the 4G connection more efficient if you do video calls? Looking at your data, the biggest issue of the Exynos version really seems to be the modem. As you said ... even Apple is buying Qualcomm modems ^^.

Samsung is learning and will get there if they get the funds it takes. Exynos are ok chips but competition is good and often times better or at least comparable. Got a 1380 in phone and am typing this on a SD695 tablet. Both are good yet not latest and greatest. MediaTek also makes very good chips. Don't argue but talk sense 😊

Hi Techmo. I've imported the SD version of the S24 and I'm experiencing a very bad color shift when viewing the screen at an angle. There is a strong green tint when looking at the phone off-center, which starts getting noticeable very early from ~25° and gets really bad as the angle increases. Can you confirm if your units have this issue and if there is a difference between the two versions?
@techmo2020

@techmo2020 Yes, I found a number of threads and even videos of people complaining about these screen issues. Terrible quality control by Samsung, very shameful. I just want to throw this phone in the trash. My 6 year old Xiaomi has a much better display despite the fact it's IPS and not OLED.
@george0t
@george0t Ай бұрын
Seriously, these displays are atrocious. When I set mine to 60hz it looks choppy like nothing else I've seen. I compared my S24 side by side with a OnePlus 8 (which is a much older OLED phone) and the OnePlus has a much better screen. Very smooth at both 60hz and 90hz, no color shifting or brigthenss loss at an angle, stronger colors with much more adjustability, and you can even choose between different color spaces/gamuts on the OnePlus!

Great to see a fellow Smartphone nerd from Austria. I think Samsung with their Android 14 Update might have figured something out with their Exynos Chips. I have been using a Galaxy S22 Ultra since its release and the Android 14 update really has smoothed things out. I don't get any frame skips in animations or inconsistent scrolling speed - which I was getting from time to time on Android 12 and 13. With that being said the battery consumption on this thing still is almost comically bad, especially standby times since I always try to maximize it by turning off wifi, 5G, bluetooth and GPS and manually AOT compile Apps with adb. I just in general think Samsung is using their Exynos chips wrong. They are not bad but they really should stay out of the Flagship Standard S Line of phones. If they would put these chips in the 500 - 700 Galaxy S FE Line they would wipe the floor with the other wannabe flagships using Mediatek 8000 and Snapdragon 7 Series SoCs in that price range. But to be honest Samsung never has been a company that gets you great specs for the price so I doubt they would ever consider it.

Software can't update hardware... Samsung might maybe(*) be able to slightly narrow the power draw difference under load by compromising in performance by limiting peak performance/max clocks in Exynos. But standby/network connectivity power draw simply can't be lowered without affecting also connection quality and risking signal drops. * If lower peak states result in CPU staying significantly longer in higher power states and unable to idle as often that can negate power saving.
@SvetlinDimitrov
@SvetlinDimitrov 2 ай бұрын
They won't do anything like this based on historic facts. They have always neglected optimization for their subpar exynos chips. They just want to sell u the shiny new phone and that's it. Last galaxy i had - S6 was simply terrible in terms of battery life and performance just 1 year after launch. It got progressively worse with every update. I moved to Huawei Mate 20 and what a difference it was.. the best phone i've ever used to this day.

From a point of thermal throttling and weak performance,now exynos can atleast stand against snapdragon counterpart. For me ,i like competition among processors,so that for an end customer like me may have choices. I am also glad about mediatek,the same way i am happy for exynos too. Another reason is amd ,and their gpu capabilities. Samsung managed the thermal way better than previous gen exynos and i now have high expectations with the next exynos. I am also excited about snapdragon 's laptop cpu also 😅

Pixel 8 chipset is tensor which is exynos on steroids. I really like Xiaomi 14 the only reason I'm hesitant to recommend it is that the camera lens get fingerprints easily and it will result in blurry pictures. Doesn't sound like a big issue at first until you start to see a lot of your pictures are blurry and gray. Between these three maybe I would pick S24 even, but it's a tough call.

While originally with Snapdragon, Google did kind of bait and switch move and Pixel 6 and later all use rebranded Exynos with tweak or two. So they usually share the same struggles to achieve good efficiency and especially standby runtime for the battery capacity. Also if photography is any importance to you, camera department is full level weaker without tele camera. Agree about Xiaomi not winning design awards for big camera bumb making such big area to literally put your finger to rest. Though cases like Imaks with smaller holes only in front of individual cameras would lower risk of "fingerprints in image". As for compact alternatives there's Asus Zenfone 10, which belongs to even more compact ground with ~3mm less width and has Snapdragon for good all around efficiency. Though camera department is again weaker. Also Sony Xperia 5 V belongs to the most compact flagships. But OS support is just fully low end at poor 2 years and camera department has been on chopping block since "Mk" III.

The thing about S22 lineup is that... Exynos 2200 chip was on a fresh node which was yet to be refined. I have S22+ and... I really need an upgrade lol. Performance is good, but efficiency and especially modem were awful... 5G/4G eats battery CHOMPS on battery, and performance quickly goes from "good" to "uhhghghh... phone too hot, time to throttle". Then they dropped S23 FE with the same chip, but on a refined node and boom- it performs well.

Go for S24+ IMHO. S24 is a small device and has heating issues, I used S24+ and it's fine. S23 and S24 has similar battery life, but S24+ has a bigger one compared to S23+, also if you want to use it, there is QHD resolution which is neat. But as you said, S24+ heats more than S23+, so if you live in tropical areas, I would think twice before getting it. Tough decision :)
