We had a hike around the beautiful village of Eyam in The Peak District. It really is a stunning place but has a very sad history.

I was the Newsagent in Eyam from 1975 to 1980 . Its the most wonderful place to live and bring up your children . . The shop I lived in was built in 1667 . Full of character and quirks . The history despite being incredibly sad demonstrates the kind of people who lived there and their ancestors still do now .

Thought you'd like to know Charterhouse Square is where the plague bodies you mentioned were buried, this is in Farringdon in London. My dad used to work in an art deco building called Florin Court on the square which was used in the TV series Poirot. Charterhouse school was nearby. My dad's office has been converted into luxury flats.

My connection to Derbyshire is Florence Nightingale via my Mums Dads side of the family. My 9th Great Grandparents ..Thomas Nightingale and Jane Lane 1622 , are Florence Nightingale’s 5th Great Grandparents 😃 Florence’s parents were called Shore but when they inherited the Estate they had to take on the Nightingale name too x x x Our family through my Grandad are from Darley Dale and Matlock areas x x x We went to youth hostels around there and found the graves of great grandparents etc They moved to Littleborough in Rochdale due to a family scandal …my Grandad’s sister was engaged to a Canadian soldier and wanted to move to Canada but her parents refused and the soldier left. Then she discovered she was pregnant, don’t know why they moved to Rochdale though. But my Grandad helped build Baitings Dam near Rippondon where he lived with my Granny..who was called Florence funnily enough (I named my daughter after her) but it had to be flooded so they moved to a farm called Over Blue Ball farm where sadly they split up and my Mum and Aunt were 6 and 10 when they found him dead aged 50 there 💔
@christislord2832
@christislord2832 Ай бұрын
My Granny Florence couldn’t marry my Grandad cos his wife had left him but wouldn’t divorce him, even though she was with another man. Yet when she died, a year before my Granny died, she was buried in my Grandad’s grave with their son who died aged 24 I think, in a bread van coming down the moors from the White House pub on Blackstone Edge moors Rochdale and crashed into a lorry turning in the road in the 50’s and my Grandad died a couple of yrs after him 💔 but his wife (he wasn’t with, she was with someone else and had left him, was buried with him and their son in 1987) My Granny died in 1988.

So sorry you’ve had to experience the results of the burden on our NHS x I was sat in what was supposed to be emergency waiting room for 6 hours waiting to hear if my son would survive whilst people with cut fingers, temperatures, coughs, a sore foot, etc etc sat around me screaming demands to be seen by someone. Eventually I was put in a small room because my son was still in recuse because they couldn’t find a particular machine to help him breathe. I felt they had forgot about me and because I was sympathetic to their demands I said nothing. Sadly my Son did not survive- I will never forget that feeling of abandonment and lack of care for those who were waiting for one word of hope. My heart breaks for everyone who is truly in the emergency waiting area because they need to be there and I hope you never have to experience the wailing of drunken souls and those who were taking up space that should be for the critical rather than the despair of the desperate. Xx 😢 xx

In the late 60s I discovered the Nightingale Centre at Great Hucklow. We used to to spend weekends there, when getting served at the Queen Anne pub was a rite of passage. Long walks up to and beyond the gliding club, sitting outside The Barrel and great parties back at the centre , all cherished memories. The thing that draws me back there is the plague village and the story of the brave people of Eyam. For me the area is sheer magic and Eyam itself a gem.

Our old greyhound got stuck between two passing stones as we were walking to the rock where people use to leave money in vinegar (to not pass on the plague) for food etc from the next village - we were horrified thinking they have been here all these years and we were going to have to call the fire brigade to free her but luckily we managed to get her out!

Just as Helen refereed to I recently watched a documentary about an American research chemist who was researching natural immunity to deadly illnesses. He heard about Eyam and came over and did an investigation tracing family members of the lady who nursed the sick people with the plague. He had developed a test for natural immunity just using a blood sample and yes the family of this lady had the natural immunity to plague!

Mad mate, if you stand back and look at what's going on today and what they've done to us, then think about what they did to the native Indians back in the day, things haven't changed much have they. Get ready for the new, gain of function bird flu, coming to a place near you very soon, but don't worry, no one should die of it, so don't listen to the bulls..t coming. Thanks for the content, God bless.

Also, down from Eyam and then either up from Grindelford to the moors between Hathersage and Owler Bar (and Sheffield) or ‘down’ to Curbar, Frogatt and the Edges are beautiful. Best of all, for me, is the triangle between Wirksworth, Ashbourne and Buxton including the stretch alongside the Staffordshire border and Dovedale. Hilly, big views, varied and less bleak than the Peak; very Wales-like. Sublime.
