I have often used this for heel flaps and have started using it for the sole of my slipper patterns, because it's so squishy to walk on. One of the strange things is how many stitches are out on youtube that say they're eye of partridge, but are actually fisherman's rib or a strange slipped rib pattern. This version is the only one that actually gives a texture that looks like the color pattern around a partridge's eye, hence the name.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It is the "eye" of partridge. If you can't see the eye, it is not worked correctly. Or the colors were not used correctly. Thank you for watching and commenting.

a-ha, I've been interested in making slippers some day when I get through some other stuff. I was thinking I would have to glue the foot onto a flip flop for a sturdy sole I can wear out onto the porch when I take out the trash....

@@patriciaheil6811 There's a product called "plasti dip" that you can brush on the sole to make it more durable. It's usually at hardware stores, as it's designed to put on the handles of metal tools like pliers. For tools you're supposed to dip the handle in, but if you use a cheap chip brush you can brush it. Have fun!

Thank you for this interesting tutorial. I hadn't heard of this stitch before. Watching you knit I noticed, that although you hold the yarn in the left hand like a continental knitter you still throw the yarn over the needle. I haven't seen anyone here in Germany knitting that way, we all use the right hand needle to pull the yarn through the loop, similar to crochet.

Hi Vivienne, I'm actually using the two-color EoP on a heel flap for a sock worked cuff-down. I've been slipping the first and the last stitches in the pattern, hoping that it would create a nice border from which I'd be able to pick up stitches easily. Well... It didn't work. Should I knit the first and last stitch instead, do you think, or maybe slip the first stitch but knit the last?

Hi Susan - I'm using the two-color EoP pattern worked flat for a heel flap (I'm knitting a cuff-down sock). I had to start over twice, because there's something wrong I think with the way I do the selvedge stitches. First, I tried slipping the first and last stitches, then, I tried slipping the first stitch and knitting the last one. In the first case, it looks like the first and last stitch are not moving up with the rest of the work row after row. In the second case, one side is moving up and the other not. The reason why I was trying to slip stitches instead of knitting them is because it creates a nice edge where I find it easy to pick up stitches later on. I'm going to give that up and try a 3rd time, knitting the first and last stitches (already found a video from you on how to pick up stitches in garter). However, I'd like to understand, since you mention in the video that slipping stitches is possible, what am I doing wrong?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
For this sample, I think that working the first and last stitch as I show in this video is the best method for a heel flap. You would pick up each garter bump along the edge for your gusset stitches.

Thank you for this detailed video. i have been working on a mitten pattern that includes the eye of partridge stitch, and after two days and lots of knitting in reverse, I still get off pattern when working in the gusset stitches. I suspect that problem arises because the gusset set up creates an uneven number of stitches as the first increase row has only included a MIR and not the corresponding MIL . I know that sounds confusing hahaha. Between this video and your thumb gusset video, I may be able to succeed. Tomorrow is attempt # 3. Thanks so much. Cheers from Nova Scotia

I wonder if this could be used for reinforcing elbows on sleeves. I guess the hard part would be to know exactly where to place the reinforcement, maybe it could be used as a patch once the sweater has been worn a bit. What do you think ? I would like to swatch this in an oval shape.
@SuzanneBryan

Johnnie Vasquez at The Yarnist calls this the double stitch. However there is also a Victorian double stitch in a Butterick book from 1898 or something that, which you can get at Internet Archive, and it looks like knitting on both sides. Excellent video showing the various ways of doing Eye of Partridge. It is also the only place I have found (so far) to make specific mention of how the stitches are pulled in and rows condensed. I did a sock using EoP for toe and ball of foot - it distorted the shape too much and I ripped it out. I looked for tutorials on how to adjust for this but to no avail. I tried short rows but that did not work out well. The fit was good but the sock looked weird. Is there any way to compensate for this? So grateful for your videos. Thank you!

I’m confused. When you are knitting in the round with two colors, you said you were going to hold the contrast yarn in your left hand but it looks like you are holding it in your right hand. Does that mean that everything is reversed throughout the video?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
the main point is to put one yarn to the left and one yarn to the right and then never switch them. if you accidentally switch them, you will get a conflicting color dominance issue. As we get older, sometimes our mouth says right when we mean left and vice versa. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. Once the video is up, I can not edit the words.

@@SuzanneBryan thank you! I was just trying to figure out positioning if everything was mirrored. I have watched some videos where that is the case as evidenced by the words on a t-shirt being backwards and it's confusing. I'm good now. Thank you for all your educational videos. I've learned a lot from you!

When I printed the directions above to use for reference while working, I noticed that round 2 of the two color in the round is incorrect. I wanted to try it because I've never done a two color version before, and then I noticed there weren't any slipped stitches referenced...

Just gorgeous! It makes me want to swatch EOP in 2 colors - whenever I have knit a heel flap in EOP in one color flat (in a cuff down sock with heel flap and gusset), I have noticed that one half looks like a lattice and the other half is more featureless. I am suspecting it may have to do with my knits and purls being different sizes. I wonder how doing this in 2 colors could affect this outcome.

The two color is the ideal way to work this stitch. For me, the one color is rather featureless other than giving reinforcement.

Thanks for another great video! QUESTION: for the 2 color working flat version, would the pattern also work if after the first row is knit we just slide the work to the other end of the needles and knit back with the blue and then slide back etc… (instead of carrying the blue yarn and catching floats) ? I’ve seen that kind of technique done for one row stripes when knitting flat.

Great question. Actually, it gives a different pattern. I do have the directions listed in the description of the video if you want to try it out on a swatch. I think you will love it.

Such a lovely and well presented video, Suzanne. Thank you! How would one increase stitches in this pattern?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
You would need to work the increases at the edges, between the selvedge stitches and the body of the work. If you increased within the stitch pattern, it would be very noticeable as it would interrupt the stitch pattern.

hey, has anybody tried this in bulky superwash for a waffle blanket? (later) I had some fingering weight Catona (cotton) leftovers and used this to make some gently exfoliating washcloths for my face. I did very badly and had to unravel a lot of times to fix mistakes but I finally turned out one with none. Thanks!
