Is your child showing unusual eye movements like staring at one spot, looking from the corners of their eyes, or having difficulty making eye contact? These behaviors, often referred to as eye stereotypies, are common in children on the autism spectrum and can impact their focus, play skills, and overall development.
Hi, I’m Dr. Sonam Kothari, pediatric neurologist, behavior analyst, and co-founder of Butterfly Learnings. In this video, I’ll explain:
What eye stereotypies are.
Why children on the spectrum develop these behaviors.
How they affect a child's developmental milestones like eye contact, imitation, and play skills.
Eye stereotypies can be caused by incomplete integration of reflexes during early development or a lack of structured play skills. These movements provide sensory feedback, which the child may find enjoyable, further reinforcing the behavior.
To address this, I’ll discuss two effective strategies:
1️⃣ Occupational Therapy Exercises: Midline-crossing activities like crawling, rolling, or transferring objects across the midline can help stabilize eye movements and improve focus.
2️⃣ Teaching Play Skills: Structured and meaningful play helps shift the child’s attention away from repetitive eye movements and promotes skill-building in imitation, focus, and engagement.
By implementing these solutions, you’ll notice improved eye contact, better focus, enhanced imitation skills, and more awareness of the child’s surroundings.
This video is packed with practical advice to help parents and caregivers support their children with autism. Watch now to learn how to guide your child toward meaningful development and overcome the challenges posed by eye stereotypies.
