Hey! :) You pretty much need more than a person to perform a harmony. A pretty basic one can include three person, where one sings the melody(normal note) and the other two sings a lower and higher note, probably by half and octave or an octave ^^. I'm a choir student and me and my friends often spilt song notes up to form a harmony to jam with ahahhah

Mabel Liang Tina Lu Tina is right. If you sing in a different octave, it means that you're still singing the same notes, which isn't what she wants. If singing harmonies while listening to the main tune makes it hard, try isolating the harmony part first? Maybe then you won't get confused.

I'm in choir as well, and I'm in alto, which is a a section that usually harmonises so somehow when I hear songs, I always habitually harmonise to it. The easiest way to do it is to use a major 3rd higher or lower, and once you've mastered that, you could try a perfect 5th higher or lower. :)
