Henning, hope you're all doing well! I was eager to see/hear KZbin demos and reviews of this. I've always been a fan of Hughes and Kuettner, more so than most of my friends, and I've liked almost all of the H&K products I've tried. Clean sounds, pedal platforms, complex tones, are all as good as anything else on the market. Several of my friends had some complaints/criticisms about the H&K distortion and high gain tones, but I never had a problem getting a great distorted tone, or a high Gain tone, particularly for recording where layered multiple guitar tracks always sounded great. I have to commend you, Henning, on a job well done with this video, because you painted a very clear picture of a very versatile, and diverse, array of tools in this toolbox, one that definitely appears relatively easy to use, intuitive in its design and layout, and has plenty of quality tones easily attainable. You also painted an equally cleared picture that as good as this is, I just did not hear the kind of distorted, high game, and multi genre metals guitar tones, for rhythm playing, that I need. Lead tones, for melodic and atmospheric, or emotive, lead playing, as well as for widdly widdly, shredding, and dive bombing, it's all there, it's all readily available, that's clearly evident, as is a lack of any rhythm guitar tones that really spoke to me. Thanks, Henning, take care, and the lead playing is really rounding into form, sounding quite good these days.

Ok, serious comment now. Being H&K, I believe they should have used their classic blue lights for all the writting in the pedal, so it would be visible (and look cool as hell). I dont remember if you mentioned it, but Phillip McKnight did comment on waiting until something better than the mini Spirits came out, he couldnt say what it was, but it would be better. Of course, it would be this. From a product development perspective, it makes sense to iterate over designs, and get a revenue stream to fund future developments. From a user/player, it does feel like indeed, they should have waited and just released these.

Outstanding video, I think I'm going to buy one! I need a backup solution for my Splawn Street Rod. Right now I have a Blackstar HT-40 which is just too much/too heavy. The Ampman seems to be exactly what I want. I've been looking at the boutique mini amps as well (Bogner, Soldano etc...) but they're single channel and no boost. My only concern is volume at 16 ohms, I'll be driving a 16 ohm cab if I need to use it. Nice video Henning. I love your honesty when you find things you don't like on a product and of course when you like things about a product, too ;) Great product. If I would be in the market for such an amp it would give me a real tough choice. For live I think I would prefer the BluGuitar Amp1. It is twice the price and has way more power making it better suitable for a band situation. For recording there is the Laney IRT-Studio. Also more expensive and the form factor is 19" and not a pedal. But it's a complete tube amp for silent recording with the possibility to Monitor yourself with it's 15W power amp. So I guess if I had not much money and/or wanted something really smal I would choose the H&K otherwise the BluGuitar. And if I do just recording I would go for the Laney. And I'm curious how the BluAmpX will compete...I guess it will be much more expensive, but probably worth it. Looking forward seeing a video about it from you HP.

@AndrewLewisHowe3 жыл бұрын
Hughes & Kettner, here's my take on this. I'd have preferred a second solo knob - so each channel could be soloed at a different level to account for EQ differences between the two channels. Also, no adjustment on the 'boost', and that's a key component to many people's core sound - klon vs treb boost vs clean, etc. Minor points, I know, but these could be deal breakers for some folk.
@Metallex3 жыл бұрын
I've had the Black Spirit 200 for year and I loved it, but the cab models continue to be incredibly underwhelming and the focus on sag and resonance is frustrating when the bottom end continues to be muddy and unresponsive at higher gain levels. I'm genuinely torn about buying one of these, the Classic is right up my street and I love their clean/crunch tones and the utility is incredible. The Modern version has the equivalent of the Ultra channel on the Black Spirit models and that is where it falls down hard, the Ultra channel does not sound good imho, and they should've pushed with the Lead amp sound on the Modern. As you said, the boost on the second channel on the Modern is completely pointless, and it really doesn't clean up well. It's great to see a cheaper competitor to the Iridium/Amp One but at this point BluGuitar are still miles ahead in terms of small form amps.

@scottmeadows32473 жыл бұрын
I own the classic. The Red Box out is unaffected by the master volume sent to your cab. The Solo does boost through the Red Box out. I like it that way in case I need to increase my volume on stage but not affect the level being sent to the mixer live. I am enjoying mine. I own a Tubemeister 18 that will be going up for sale now.

@@rieselaar I have always found this to be a problem with pretty much every two-channel amp I've used; either volume differences or tonal differences that just made it impossible to use that way. and this H&K is an amp, not an amp simulation.
@tanguydelooz28813 жыл бұрын
@@EytschPi42 Hi Paul!! The cab output could be useful maybe in a small venue as a sound return (or to create a feedback loop in a band situation). But it's not a necessity if you intend to play live going direct. With the paradigm shift we're seeing, I feel the cab output is more an additional feature than something that should help the circuit sound better. I just want the direct output to sound great, not really caring whether it has a real 25W poweramp section. (The industry is used to micing amps, but really, it's archaic.) Another issue is that the cab will probably not sound the same as the direct out. Then better have a fullrange PA cab connected to the mix console with just the isolated guitar signal.

@@tanguydelooz2881 so the way I use the dsm Humboldt simplifier is in a 4 cable method with my V4 kraken pedal in "through" mode, making it a 3 channel preamp really. The sd-1 ,the zen drive and the big muff work really well as well. One thing I completely agree with Henning on though is that the cab sim lacks "natural reverberation" which makes it sound dry.

Dude, it's cardboard, don't be stupid. You can even find it for free in the trash. Probably , due to its size, it was part of the box of the ampman classic. I dunno why they made that amp so much bigger than the modern one!

Ignoring the great video content for a minute: I freaking LOVE your new comic inspired graphics! I have an embarrassing kwästchönn about the fantastically sounding Ampman, though: what does it mean in practicality that it's an actual amp? Can it run any amp cabinet or speaker I throw at it, yet at the same time go direct to my audio interface without killing me and all my gear? Is this de facto the exactly same thing as an amp head? Even though I'm 41, I've basically grown up with amp simulators, and I have almost zero experience with proper analog guitar gear 🥺 first I didn't have the money, then I travelled too much to bother buying anything that big. Also: can a mono amp still be made to power two speakers, with a splitter box or something?

Had the classic one for a few days and it's no competition for my old Tech 21 FlyRig 5 (v1) in terms of sound and feel going DI. I know, it's meant to be a proper amp, but I would like it to sound decent DI and it was rather disappointing.
@liedgitarrist3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. 😉 had the flyrig and prefer the Spirit of vintage by far. It is all a matter of taste.
@garystackhouse57873 жыл бұрын
I have both (AmpMan Classic and FlyRig V.1)... they're different tools with different sounds and purposes. It's like saying a Martin D28 is "better" than a Strat. I actually find the TubeMan has better feel, especially with cleaner tones when using some Sag, and I can DI without using a separate DI box to give me a balanced signal for the board. (For the record, I also have a Helix, which is another tool, again!)

There are so many stomp box heads now on the market that I wouldn’t sayH&K is a game changer. It’s good in it’s price range. Anyway, Taurus makes these stomp heads that are far better than this, however they cost more too.

@EytschPi423 жыл бұрын
The OX will give you exactly the sound of a mic-ed cab... a high end emulation... this serves as a point of reference. Did you watch the whole video? Half the video is ALL the DI sounds from the Ampman. If this sounded as good as the OX, this should tell you something!
