Picked up a Carvin Mach 100 (which is supposedly the exact same/differently-branded OEM unit - same layout / same packaging )- ordered this to check out as a backup - (Thomann is shipping with a US power cord) Using mine with actual preamp pedals (+ fx pedals) So far/so good - ( good enough for fuzzed-out bonehead doom/in the mix) I'm impressed. 🤘🎸💥

i purchased 2 of these Harley Benton power amps and I'm going to buy a Scott Dixon 2x12 because of this video. I did not know how powerful, light weight, and durable these were. Those Dixon's are superb! This is a Godsend! Light weight and powerful. Great tone and great playing.

Review from Thomann.: Great idea...but SlackboyJim, 03.10.2019 I got excited about this product early on in 2019, and ordered it for arrival in July. Product arrived ok, and worked a charm with Mooer compact preamps meaning I had a HUGE amount of tonal and volume choices from a very compact pedal board. The Thunder was loud enough in to 2 x 12 to keep up with drummers in bands (match that impedance, though!!) and was "clean" and uncolouring. Even the size of the volume meant I could gently ride my level when the band got excited. BUT.... After 1 month of use I found I was getting electric shocks from the unit. I isolated it from the rest of my gear and so ONLY the pedal and PSU were in use, and sure enough 5-8V were measured. I could "solve this" by plugging in to an earthed product but that isn't right. Unit is being returned and I'll update you when I have news...

I have it..the power supply is light and you still need a cable either way so not a big deal to me..It sounds fine at high volume but once you start to hit the limit it will compress the highs and lows into a mid focus tone..But by that point it's kind of stupid loud. Just be sure to limit the output of your modeler etc. So you don't overload too much.

Thinking of pairing this with a pedalboard preamp (an actual preamp in a pedal, not just something that says preamp but is actually just meant to be a drive pedal), that way the entire rig can fit on a pedalboard. So the chain would go instrument > dirt pedals > preamp pedal > time based effect pedals > thunder 99 > cabs. And then it would also be trivial to put a splitter/switcher off the time based effects to go to an ir loader for silent stage playing where everything is being sent to the venues pa system or to a recording interface.

Just curious did you end up going this route and if so your thoughts on it. I've been considering going a very similar direction, master effects marauder and jc pre both set up on the board as a/b channels, get some compact solid state tones with em, run them out to the harley benton or similar.
@Mennenth
@Mennenth 11 ай бұрын
@@Hiseternallight I have not gone this route yet. My rig is serving me fine for the moment so no need to upgrade, though once I do I may be going a different direction. Some interesting options have appeared since that post. More expensive, but that just means saving up for longer.

I ordered one last week, with 2 hb 1x12 v30 cabs and iso box for wdw, i should get all next week . Rig will be mesa combo, slave out to tc chorus delay reverb to hb power amp Edit 26/12 great wdw rig now 😊 Edit 24/6 I experienced some small shock when I used a splitter with isolated out , i felt some shocks when turning on off my wet effects and it was noisy. The thunder 99 seems to have a floating output I removed the splitter and plugged straight the slave output of my main amp ( grounded) to my wet effects and thunder 99.No more shocks and no more hum. Hope it helps

I've been running this with a NUX Amp Academy and HX Effects through a pair of VHT 1x12 cabs (Mojotone speakers). Plenty loud enough for nearly any club-type gigs. I have had this for about a year, no shock issues (USA) and the power supply fits under my Pedaltrain classic 2 board. I still prefer real amps when I can use them, but many small clubs have such limited space these are a no brainer. Have also use it with just an Ampero, same great results, just had the power supply and amp back with the cabs to save space. Next up, to try the wet/dry thing. The ultimate budget back up solution.

Here’s a tip: in Helix you not only have to turn the cab sims off, but also the powerstage sims off too. Since you are already going through a real power amp and two real guitar cabs. My advice in these circumstances is to use only the pre amp stage sims in the Helix. The power amp stage simulation in Helix would be more recomended for FRFR.
@stevebowley6348
@stevebowley6348 4 жыл бұрын
totally disagree. This is a clean SS power amp and will not give you the tonal richness of the modeled powerstage. By all means try it, but that modeled powerstage is what gives many of the amps their character and this will NOT give it back to you...
@tarotguitar
@tarotguitar 4 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you if we where talking about an FRFR context. If you’re going to use it in an “amp in the room” context with a real guitar cab, its going to sound weird... I’ve never tried it specifically with a power amp pedal, but I have experimented with a DT25/50 and other power amp stages on other amps and always came to the same conclusion. 😉

@@tarotguitar same here! I tried several ways using the return of my Carvin V3M amp, and the only way that sounded nice was using a pre-amp block in the HX, no IR/cab/amp worked this way.

Yeah I have to disagree also. That may be the case with a tube power amp but the Harley Benton is very neutral solid state power amp and won’t provide the character of a tube power amp. You’ll want the full amp model most likely to get the character of the power section. If it work for you though then go for it but I definitely prefer the full amp models with my Harley Benton GPA-400.

Further to my earlier post, my Harley Benton Thunder 99 (HB T99) arrived a few days ago. I bought this pedal amp to drive two small "value" PA cabs that I bought years ago. The set-up (described below) is for domestic use. I have no intention of using the HB T99 in a rehearsal or live situation, although I have little doubt that the unit has the power handle these scenarios. However, for now, I'm keeping things simple. I took my smallest pedal board (usually populated with a single row of five Boss pedals) and attached a Boss GT-1 mini stomp board to its left and the HB 99 to its right. The Boss hosts my Line 6 Variax (unpowered) (via the mono instrument input) and "Spotify" using a Kindle (via the auxiliary input). In terms of its outputs, the stereo outputs from the Boss, feed the stereo inputs of the HB T99 which, in turn power the aforementioned PA cabs via its stereo outputs. Simples; right? In summary, I now have a very small pedal board armed with a stereo guitar processing unit and a 50W + 50W power stage. It's neat and sounds great (with a tonal quality approaching that of my studio reference monitors). So far, no problems or glitches; and, in particular, the HB T99 can be cranked up for hours on end with no indication of electrical or heat issues with the unit or its power pack. So far, so good...

About the power device for the pedal, here in my country is sold without that but with a single power line. Maybe it's this way because we use 220V and the pedal is built in that voltage. If you live were 110v is the standard electricity power, you MUST use a Voltage converter and they aren't small devices.

Run a Hotone Legacy Mojo Diamond 5 watt Amp Head --- effects loop out (line out) ------ to Harly Benton Thunder 99 so this is a preamp - power amp. Use a wet side Sonicake Rockstage or a Black Hammer for effects. If you want more crunch in dry side preamp, use the Vulcan Five O - 5150. If you want a cleaner Boutique preamp, run the Siva Boogie.

If you run a Pedalsnake type snake cable system you can leave that big fat power supply back with your back line and run the power up the snake to the small box . If the output from that supply is DC that is. It doesn't look unlike the power supply box for the Strymon O'Jai system. I think that little power amp might be a great replacement for the 3 ton Crown power amp I currently have to power the speakers for the wet portion of my wet/dry/wet rig.

Greetings from rainy Scotland, I stumbled across your channel late yesterday evening, decided that sleep could wait, and spent most of the night working my way through a number of your videos. I was most impressed. I still am. The content, presentation, sense of humour; all excellent. AND, you "seem" to think along similar lines as myself (which might not be a good thing, when I think about it). Of course, you have way more gear than I do and you are a better guitarist than I; so, obviously, I hate you for that. BUT, no matter, you still get full marks. I was also so impressed with your review of the Harley Benton Terror 99 power amp, that I ordered one. However, your comments about the AC power pack got me thinking. Simply put, how would you feel about producing a video about electricity? Thought not; "Ohms", right? Well, not quite. I was thinking more about an episode or two covering the aspects that all musicians need to know about the safe use of electricity. I mean, it doesn't really matter if it comes from a little 9V DC battery, or through a 13A 230V AC mains socket, or via an AC power block delivering multiple, isolated DC feeds; the fact is that the vast majority of contemporary musical technology depends upon it to operate. BUT, there's something else. Put it this way, "Have you ever been electrocuted?" I hope not and I wouldn't recommend it; seriously, once was enough for me. SO THAT'S WHY a short discussion about electricity would be good e.g., how it is supplied to musical equipment, AND how to ensure that it does not damage yourself, anyone else or the technology itself. Just a thought. [PS: I wrote this BEFORE reading the safety concerns about this unit as described below].

Probably my headphones but I could hear a difference between the two power amps. Just sounded like a heavily effected weak plastic Helix tone. I could probably use the HB power amp as a back up with an effects unit in case a tube amp goes down at a gig or for power at a practice...or as cheap wet dry wet scenario as you said. Definitely not real amp sounding but hey you get what too pay for. It has it’s place. 🤘🤘🤘

The Mooer BabyBomb30 has a 24v power supply that is big too. I think the Thunder PS would fit until an Temple Audio 24 Pedal Board. Also it would be great if they just came out with a 50w mono version that had an effects loop in it. No all pedal sound great being jammed in a row. This is probably why the modeler pedals would be a better product to use and adjusting those EQ settings would probably get you close to the depth on the Duncan amp. What about doing a demo on this Thunder with a Preamp Live?

I really wish the price of the Powerstage was a bit cheaper. Hopefully Seymour Duncan is genuinely using higher end components in the Powerstage to justify the price. It's probably just my bias associating Class D power amps in the guitar world as being cheap budget offerings. I am still interested in seeing the Powerstage 200 when it's released. I love my HB Thunder 99. I run it with stereo reverbs and delays. Also, cool to run two different distortion boxes (AMT E1 and SansAmp GT 2 in my case) seperately into the stereo ins. Running two 12" inch 8 ohm speaker cabs with this and its great for recording/home practice but may be a bit too quiet for live however, 4 ohm speakers might be ok for live. Great for stereo ambient guitar sounds. It runs on most voltages (100v to 220v) however, it comes with an E.U. plug so you will need a USA plug adapter (or whatever your countries line voltage plug is) which only runs around $5.00. Yes thomann does deliver this to the USA for a very reasonable shipping cost.

Hi, I have a bit of a long winded question for you, apologies in advance. I've recently bought a Bugera 6262 212 combo amp, and the amp says it should be set to 16 ohms for internal speakers. It has a single 6.3mm speaker lead but two speakers and whatever the input source is it should be 16 ohms. I'm actually going to bypass the speakers and plug into an axetrack isolation cab I managed to get, it's a speaker and an SM57 in a sealed box. It uses the input from where the amp would usually go to a cab, so the amp gets full use, it just goes to the iso speaker instead of the combo speakers. The SM57 picks it up, there's an XLR out which I'm planning to connect to a Behringer UMC22. That plugs into a computer and has headphones out, but to be honest I'm not that bothered about recording, I'm basically using the whole setup as an analog attenuator with air and a mic rather than limiting the signal electronically. I'd like to get the output from the UMC22 to go to the speakers on the amp that I'm using instead of through PC or headphones, I asked on Amazon and someone said that the signal would need a power amp otherwise it would be too weak for the speakers. So my chain is: Guitar > amp section of Bugera 6262 212 combo > iso box with sm57 > xlr > Behringer UMC22 > ...... > speaker section of Bugera 6262 212 combo Can I output from the UMC22 into the Harley Benton Thunder 99, amplify without colouring the sound (at least not too much), then send to the speakers in my 6262 cab? This way I'd be getting all the tone of a cranked up AND cranked speakers, picking up that sound and being able to hear it, AND being able to play without a DAW when I want but also being able to use one when I do but still hearing the sound from a cab with zero latency. The goal is to get the sound of a cranked amp AND speakers that are really pushing air, but at bedroom levels, something attenuators can't do because they lower the signal so the speakers don't work as hard. So what I really need is a way to cleanly amplify the SM57 and get it playing out of my the speakers that are in the combo. So do you think it would work and be safe? I'd rather use my amp speakers than buying more. I don't know, I'm very confused lol. Sorry it's such a long question and thanks for your time.

the problem is gain to be that you are sending the sound of a 12 inch speaker into a 12 inch speaker.. I don’t think that will sound right. Also… the Thunder has instrument level inputs and the interface will give it line level. I would rather recommend a small PA speaker, a powered one… and go out if you interface into that… done.

@@bobbyodell8676 A 60 Watt stereo Class D power amp pre mounted board (Texas Instruments) is 5 bucks in any electronic store or the web. Other than that is: cabinet, pot, led, jacks,, paint, power suply, and like 10 minutes to assemble one in a factory line? So yes. They are overpriced now, but I think they are the future. No more reason to big boxes of wood, iron, tubes and heavy transformers. Its like "vinil/CD/mp3/streaming" thing. The benefits are too many for the market to look away. From heavy and costly amps to virtually free now. Purists, nerds and snobs would still want the biggo amps. I still think they are beautiful. But the big market will prefer low weight, cheap, quiet, cool temperature and zero mantainence Class D. In my country (Brazil) there are people making it for like 40 dollars, and handmaking it for 20. Electro harmonix's 44 caliber is like 150 bucks and its a steal. 80% of that is the name in it.

Can it be used in bridged mode like most stereo power amps cab be used? It would be great for a mono rig as usually that doubles the power (the sum of both channels powers). It would be in theory around 100 whats for a single 4 Ohm cab, maybe around 50 watts for a single 8 Ohm cab.

This Class D amp technology is amazing. I have 2 Quilter 200 tone blocks running my stereo guitar rig. You can run 4 4x12 cabs with this set up. I run 2 cabs. Never have any isuues and they get MUCH louder than I would ever need. I went through the years of owning various Rocktron Velocity amps. They suck in comparison. They always over heated and shut down. I would like to try this Benton amp on a small petal board for a easy grab and go. Plug that thing into a 4x12.
