Definitely recommend watching and reacting to Janet's MTV Icon Special. There are multiple versions of the MTV Icon special on KZbin but would say that the best edited/most similar to the original broadcast (the only major difference from the original broadcast is that the commercials are edited out) was uploaded by the user miss janet and is titled: Janet Jackson MTV Icon Full. The special is just over a hour long but instead of making a hour long reaction you guys could break up the reaction into 4 to 5 parts that are around 10 to 12 minutes long. Janet is the main focus of the MTV Icon special but there are many celebrities who appear throughout the special. It really gives you a sense of how many people in the music industry she inspired/how big she was, a career overview for Janet (up until 2001 when the special was released), and helps you understand what Janet was going through behind the scenes during different points in her career (like her dealing with depression during the making of The Velvet Rope album). As others have mentioned Janet definitely created her own lane and inspired many musical acts. Many artist that you have reacted to on this channel have cited Janet as someone who inspired/influenced them. To put it in REAL perspective, Michael has been recording since he was 10 and actually has 17 #1 Pop Hits. Janet has 10. As a solo artist, Michael is 5th place for #1s, while Janet is tied for 10th place with Stevie Wonder. Also, Fyi, charts were calculated differently beginning in the 90s, so Michael's charting/sales prior to that were not reflected in the manner sales began to be reflected thereafter. That aside, I could list a few pages worth of records, awards and accomplishments that Michael achieved over Janet. That's not the point. Why do people get so defensive when the facts are stated. Janet's impact and success paled in comparison to Michaels, but that's no knock at her. There never was and never will be another Michael Jackson. He's in a class of his own. Even though she was in his shadow for a very long time, she carved her own lane, career and is herself an icon. Both truths CAN coexist.

Janet also does have her own 4 hour/2 night documentary about her career that will be released in January 2022. A 1 minute teaser trailer which features brief clips of interviews from Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, and her brother Tito Jackson as well as behind the scenes footage (including a brief clip of her and Michael working on writing their duet "Scream" as well as a brief clip of Tupac when they were on the set of Poetic Justice) was recently released and is something you could react to. The video is titled: "JANET" Documentary Teaser (Official). You might have to watch the trailer more than once within the reaction if/when you guys react to it so you can truly grasp all the moments featured in the teaser trailer of the documentary. Btw, there are people who don't even know Michael's music like that, but because they hear "oh he's the G.O.A.T., the best through social media and not by watching or experiencing his catalog of entertainment for themselves. They automatically praise him because that's what social media does. People be gas lighting his popularity and only heard one or 2 songs by him. He is a legend, respectfully so. There are huge greats from the 80's and beyond, eras that are world wide known. The only difference that keeps people from putting them on a higher pedestal is the fact that Mike was performing professionally since he was very young. That just gave him more years in the game. Was everything he put out good? No. Every artist will have songs or even albums that dud, but still, their hits make up for their misses. Janet had 2 albums before Control debuted, but they weren't commercial successes. After Control...every album hit the ground running. Her biggest albums were : Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet and Velvet Rope. A little bit of sexism plays a part in people always putting her in Michael's shadow as well. Don't believe me? Ask a man if Beyonce is the Michael Jackson of this era and they will not even pause to say no, yet they barely know any of her discography because she's a woman and they are too macho to dig into her catalog and be real about it. Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna, George Michael, Janet Jackson. These were the legends that shaped most of the popular music genre of the late 20th century. Janet is a Juggernaut in her own right. She has been an inspiration, especially to little black girls who got to witness a female black pop icon (and a Jackson, no less) show that we deserve representation too. Michael AND Janet were the only 2 Jacksons keeping their family legacy going for 2 and a half decades. They ruled the 90's and Janet kept it strong for the early 2000's, til she walked away from it for a long while. Guys, just started watching your videos tonight and enjoying your vibe. Just answer your question, no she was never in Michael’s shadow. That’s just not the way we thought about it. The Jacksons were a musical family and many of them were famous in their own right. Some of the siblings started as an incredibly popular group in the 70s called the Jackson 5. Michael and Janet shared similarities musically. But, nobody thought that she was copying him in anyway. Maybe you guys started out by hearing Michael, and so you see the similarities and think she’s emulating him. But they truthfully emulated each other.

No, Janet hasn’t been in Micheals shadow (MUSICALLY) since 1986 when she released Control and carved her own lane - blew that lane wide open with 89 Rhythm Nation and by the time we were at 93’s janet. she started creating freeways and bypasses’ for future performers. You have to remember that Janet is the first black child star on a prime time network tv show as Penny on Good Times along with roles on Different Steokes and Fame. Janet was already doing her own thing in acting before her father told her to do music - The only reason younger generations don’t know about her is because she was blacklisted after the Super Bowl. So removed from radio, early 2000’s was when MTV, VH1 and BET we’re shifting away from music videos (thanks to Viacom) so that left her with not many promotional outlets- however throughout it the years the ban seems to be lifted from main stream press and she’s about to come hard in 2022👏🏾

Then later virgin records signed her for 80 million in 1996 .Michael later signed a larger contract after her. Janet also managed a seven week run at number 1 with her hit single “That’s The Way Love Goes”. Actually, the only reason she appears to be in his shadow now is because so much of the new generation doesn’t know about her after she was blacklisted from the Super Bowl and today. But early on in her career, she tried very hard to get out of Michael’s shadow. Which she did eventually. That’s when she created the album “Janet.” Removing the last name to show independence. That’s why even though Michael wanted to work for her a long time, she refused to do it until she felt like she established her own lane. That’s when she decided to do Scream with him. and actually she eclipsed his stardom at one point. You could see her insulin even last night at the mtv vmas when Norman’s performance paid tribute to her. Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Normani, Ciara, Rihanna’s, etc. all credit Janet as a major influence. We all call Janet The Blueprint.

As a huge fan of both Michael and Janet, and a level headed, non defensive, overly emotional one, I can attest that YES Janet has always been in Michael's shadow...how could she not be, her older brother is the King Of Pop who achieved world domination decades before her 1st hit. Janet worked very hard to keep herself separate from her brother which is why Scream was their only collaboration because she didn't want people to say she got success off him and it's still the most expensive music video ever made and in the Guinness book of world records because of it. Janet's thickness is what made curves acceptable in the music industry. No one had breast and a butt like she did now it's more acceptable and everyone is building their bodies like Janet's is naturally. She's the original stallion, but when Janet came out (80s) up until the 2000s, mainstream music was all about showcasing flat chests and no curves because is was all white women being pushed by labels and that's the look they wanted to perpetuate. Their standard of beauty. People who don't know their history think the Kardashians invented "body" but no, Beyonce had curves on stage before them (even jlo at least had the butt before them) and Janet was way before Beyonce and jlo.
