LTV made a tilt wing called the XC-142, four engines and larger craft. They made 5 of them. The last surviving example is in the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. They flew it there when it was retired.

perfect for early warning when the brits were caught with their pants down in the falklands as they were using old choppers for the role with about 90km radius of operation. ie useless.

Absolutely. It would have been an excellent replacement for the Sikorski HH52a Seaguard amphibious helo I flew in as a U.S. Coast Guard Flight Mechanic in. The 365N Dolphine they did choose was a joke. International politics and CorpeRATe highjinks killed it pure and simple.

Possibly, but the down wash in hover was reportedly more focused than that of a helicopter with a rotor with a much larger diameter. Still it could fly further and faster than a helicopter. This would allow for searches to be done faster and in maritime SARS reach further while still being able to provide, although imperfect, hoist/sling assist.

Think Gary Hilson's comment is probably pretty accurate. God bless America. But not so good if you happen to design an aircraft that makes the Osprey look pretty ordinary dollar for dollar! Unfortunately you cannot turn the clock back! This was an exceptional aircraft in every aspect.

Nothing that sinister. Cost vs function made the Bell UH a better choice for most countries military strategies. It was ahead of it's time but I am really surprised that a civilian aviation company has not picked this up to make a modern private charter aircraft given it's load and versatility.

It was a Canadair-General Dynamics project and funded in part by the Canadian government, who should have bought a number of them for patrol/SAR instead of trying to compete with the Huey as a troop mover and gun platform.

I worked on this and the CL 215. Both aircraft were ahead of their time but plagued by finance problems. The CL 84 didn't attract enough money to continue testing. The CL 215 was almost canceled until Quebec decided to order a fleet. Both were relatively easy to work on. The late sixties, early seventies, was a time when aircraft work was hard to come by. I have no idea why the Canadian government didn't want to finance outright both of these machines. There was a market out there for them.

This aircraft would have been a far better replacement for the Sikorski HH52a Seaguard amphibious helo than that plastic puppy CorpeRATe bus the U.S. Coast Guard bought. I was a Flight Mechanic on one of the eval flights for the 365N Dolphine and all of us considered it unsuited to the mission due to severely limited cabin space among other items.

Modern helicopters (e.g. Blackhawk) have larger payloads, are almost as fast (even compared to the Dynavert's prop-forward flight), and longer ranged. At the time, the Dynavert blew any helicopter out of the water, but it is obsolete today.

Canadair started it. Perfected it, but the americans choose their own but fail to comply and cancel the project. This is the reason Leonardos AW-609 still cannot get FAA certification. Seems like creating a vaccum effect that will make the Osprey the only tilt rotor available for commercial or military role.

This project like the Arrow and the TSR2 in the UK didn't suit the US Aircraft industry. There must have been some very dubious blackmail happening because both the Arrow and the TSR2 projects were scrapped and all the prototypes mysteriously destroyed.

Tilting the entire wing provides advantages over the tilting engine pods of the Osprey... note that the ailerons provide yaw capability when in hover. There was (I bekieve) a combination of electronic and mechanical coupling of all of the flight controls, so that the flight envelope was achieved without the pilot needing to explicitly control individual parts of the aircraft's control surfaces and rotors... unlike the pitch/collective and tail rotor situation in a helicopter.
@scottmccambley764

Remember this was developed before the transistorized computer. The whole automated flight system was mechanically designed and was meant to be as simple as possible so regular pilots could fly it using their current knowledge of flight controls. This mean't you didn't need a specialized flight training program just a couple hours of additional instruction. This went up against the Bell Huey for Vietnam service, thats why it was evaluated in the States. Its only flaw: It wasn't designed and built in America. At least they didn't cut up and destroy all the evidence like they did the Arrow. You can find one of the flying prototypes in Canada's national aviation museum.
