What a day to remember. Was flown in to the base on an AMI C-130 from Ciampino. The AMI put on a day never to forget. My eyes were watering when those F104s flew by...pure nostalgia. Bene grazie mille

One of the most iconic Cold War fighters and a stunning beauty. I grew up with f104 as my dad was head of navigation and we spent a lot of time on the base as kids. The ‘haul’ still gives me the shivers

Remember this "haul" when i was a kid - the German Marine flew very close to the Baltic Seas Beach where we enjoyed our holidays - i remember it as it would have been yesterday... a few yrs after there where Phantoms and after that Tornados... this year there where some Eurofighters - but its not the same tbh...

F-104 Starfighter. Ein geniales Design. Schlank and ästhetisch, leistungsstark und überlegen. Der Archetyp des Jet-Abfangjägers. Der Ruf des Witwenmachers ist auch nicht dem Originalentwurf geschuldet. Es waren die Deutschen, die den Jäger in ein Allzweckflugzeug auch für den Bodenkampf umrüsten wollten und ihm so Blei unter die filigranen Flügel genagelt haben. Das spiegelt auch die Verluststatistik wieder. 108 deutsche Piloten verloren auf dem Starfighter ihr Leben - aber nur 8 Amerikaner. Das mag deutsche Tradition sein. Schon die ME 262 war als "Blitzbomber" einer ähnlich unsinngen Verwendung zum Opfer gefallen.

+Mike Palumbo Indeed, its caused by bypass air re-merging with gases exhausted from the core. Due to the nature of the 104's nozzle arrangement and bypass ratio even other aircraft equipped with the J-79 sound nothing like it.

It was very hard to fly for inexperiecned pilots used to slower planes, not for people with the proper training. Most of those accidents happened either a) in US service when it was first introduced, and no one knew how to fly a plane with such good performance and b) in German service, mostly because the Luftwaffe had just been rebuilt and both the ground crews and pilots were more used to WW2 prop fighters than actual jets, never mind a supersonic jet like the 104. In every other nation it served in (as well as in Germany after ~1966 when they fixed lots of things about their program) the F104 was actually very safe. For example, the Italian Air Force had fewer accidents with the 104 than the French Air Force did with the Mirage III, yet you don't hear anyone calling the Mirage a flying coffin.

Lo abbiamo tenuto anche troppo ( anzi non dovevamo proprio adottarlo!) avremmo dovuto prendere il phantom di uso polivalente.Ma si sa nell'aviazione come in marina ed esercito di cervelli ve ne erano ben pochi
