The long awaited norwegian CF-104D Starfighter made it`s appearance at the 2018 Danish Airshow in Aalborg. Unfortunately it started to rain when the Display started. Still some good loud howl of the J79 engine.

They are about as sharp as a dull axe. Which is to say, a plausible gash hazard if you aren't careful and whang your head on it. I've laid hands on a starfighters wing leading edge. It's not sharp enough to cut unless you bump into it with a "hard" body part with some force. The aircraft is also deceptively small, the only way most folks could even hit thier head on the wing would be if they were ducking under it to get to say... the main gear bay. It looks way bigger in photos and videos than it actually is. If you stand next to one... it's pretty small compared to most modern jets. An F4 phantom absolutely dwarfs it. It's 5 feet longer than an F16 but about 3 feet shorter to the top of the tail. It's also only got a 22 foot wingspan, the F16's is 32 feet.

I grew up in Bodø in the late 70's and early 80's, where the 2 Norwegian 104-squadrons (331 and 334) were based. Both my father and grandfather worked on the base and I remember coming to work with them from time to time to see the planes and visit the squadrons. A couple of my fathers friends flew these planes, and they used to show me around and let me sit in the cockpit from time to time (restrictions were a lot looser back then). My grandfather also got a backseat-ride in the 104 at one point, and I remember forcing him to tell the story time and time again. The sound of this beautiful aircraft is definitely the sound of my childhood. I still get goosebumps when I hear the J79 howling. In Bodø at the time (and still) the Starfighter was nicknamed "Vestfjordoksen", translated in English meaning the Western Fjord Bull, because of the howling being similar to the lowing of a bull while flying on full afterburner over the Western Fjord on QRA-scrambles to intercept and identify Russian aircraft flying west along the coast of Northern Norway. If my memory serves me right, 104's from Bodø were the first NATO-planes to intercept and photograph the then brand new MIG-25 Foxbat off the coast of Finnmark. One of the pilots commented afterwards that the Foxbat's two engines seemed so large while he came up behind and slightly below it, that he felt the 104 could fit in one of them.

@@gusty9053 Those old planes were actually faster than the modern ones-something most people don’t know. The F-18 and F-35 are slugs compared to the century fighters, let alone the Teen series, which are considered by many to be the high-water mark of U.S. fighter design. The F-22, in spite of its advanced airframe, is slower than the F-15 Eagle it was meant to replace; the F-35, despite prodigious amounts of thrust, couldn't hope to catch an F-104. The F-101 was flown by both Canada and the U.S. (in the latter case, until the late 1980s). Accident rate was acceptable. The F-104 was flown by numerous air forces; infamously, both Germany and Canada ultimately lost about half their F-104s; the Spaniards, on the other hand, lost none. The F-105 had a high loss rate because it saw combat; the F-106 was known as a “gentleman’s fighter” because of how easy it was to fly. A problem specific to the F-104 (and to a lesser extent the F-101) was the high tail plane, which restricted angle of attack. You’ll note that no modern fighters use this arrangement.

Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God." ~John Gillespie MaGee Jr.

@@aesop8694 German pilots without enough training or experience were taken from their subsonic Sabers and put into a mach 2 capable high altitude interceptor, to be used for low altitude missions Using Canada as an example, it's CF-104 starfighters were used as high altitude interceptors, and had a higher safety rating then the sabers the RCAF operated The F-104 was dangerous to fly if you didn't know what you were doing, it had quirky flight characteristics that less experienced pilots would mess up on Which goes into the Luftwaffe problem, The Luftwaffe was reformed and a lot of former pilots and ground crew had entered the civilian workforce, so pilots in the reformed Luftwaffe were given short refresher courses on first generation jets, ground crews were also very similar The Luftwaffe also flew their starfighters as low altitude fighter bombers and equipped them with additional avionics which added to weight and pilot workload which attributed to a lot of controlled flight into terrain, Other nations had better luck, Norway only lost 6 Starfighters to accidents, with the Spanish airforce having the best statistics with no Spanish starfighters lost due to accidents

Why didn't they develop the F-35 instead? That would have been a real surprise for those MiG-25's! The next models are always just a little bit better. Mach 30 still makes those things red hot, so they all fly "with the handbrakes on" so to say. When will that heat problem be solved? Or is it really a power, material properties, amount of fuel and range dilemma? There were rocket powered F-104's too, and that's quite some years ago. Do you know that? Are there modern jets that do the same trick? I known there are booster rockets for extra take off power. Would a carbon fuselage F-104 with modern avionics add something? Or is the wingload far to high, full of modern ordonance and full of fuel? Have there been F104 variants with slightly larger wings? Or is that considered blasphemy here? Okay, a lot of shots in the air. Should I just see and read more of aviation history? Or do you have interesting answers? Please surprise me.

@@flexelsson1625 Yes, and that is exactly my point. Why is progress and development so slow? Tiny steps forward. Why not a breakthrough? Supersonic airliners are finally back. Get that fuel waisting drag down. Don't just give up the Concorde, solve that problem! Now we are decades further, and is fuel consumption actually much better for those supersonic machines? I wonder. That impatience and surprise how things are done is the base for my jokes. Business as usual is not the smartest approach. Let all those aviation companies cooperate. Now three companies invest a lot of time in a design, and only one will be built. That's ridiculous, let them combine their best ideas and the result can be better. But no, things are done this way, and nobody can change that. The dinosaur effect. Old conservative men in charge. Not all are cool. That's why the F-35 is flying 50 years too late. Those metals needed were in the ground already, 50 years ago. And you can recycle aluminum. Computers were not that fast, that makes design completely different. That's true.
