I am an F-100 pilot with 132 missions in Vietnam (and I lost some of my friends in the F-105). The F-100 doesn't have any of the "delayed G" discussed at length in this video. I was mostly shocked at the video's instructions on how to make a 30 degree dive attack. I've made many of them. The video is set up for someone on a flat gun range -- not for combat. The pilot is supposed to fire the rockets at 2200 feet above ground level, and his concern is about safe recovery altitude over the target. THAT VIDEO ISN'T TALKING ABOUT COMBAT! The target IS NOT at sea level -- it's in the hills. What is the target altitude AGL? Unknown! What is your slant range to the target? Unknown! If you're focused on recovery altitude over the target -- you're not looking at the real danger -- how about those hills ahead of you as you pull out? One of our pilots strafed a truck, then pulled up and a big hill was in front of him and he flew through the top of a tree! Another few into a house on a hill during pullout. The video absolutely forgets GROUNDFIRE. The enemy saw you coming, and they're filling the sky with bullets. Pickle your bombs, pull hard to get your nose above the horizon, then JINK! Turn hard, randomly, to throw off the aim of the AA gunners on the ground. This video might be OK for new pilots on the gunnery range, but it would be poor advice for combat.

I love the real world info you have here, Love the F-100, too often forgotten. I think this video while cool does highlight an issue inherent in nearly every training film from the 40's to today, they are never realistic, the real world especially in a combat environment. SOP's are great in theory but in real life practice the guy at the stick will always find a better way, or else.

This video delivers basic knowledge on dive recovery technique. It is assumed that ground profile is plain, and enemy makes no counter impact on an aircraft. It is intended for newbie pilots, not trained professionals and air combat experts. As Russians speak : Не сразу Москва строилась. That means: 'Moscow hasn't been build at once'. It just beginning.

@@НиколозКвривишвили I'm interested in "Не сразу Москва строилась". In English, our phrase is "Rome wasn't built in a day".

What an incredible aircraft,but sobering to think that 108 aircrew died in F-105s in Vietnam. Former Royal Air Force pilot,I flew the Phantom fgr.2 with 43 squadron based at leuchers,then transitioned onto the Tornado F3 based at Coningsby,great days.

I hope this film can be restored (4K) to the correct color palette; it would be awesome once restored to original color. Be nice to have a 105 restored for airshows.

Special weapons (nukes) were delivered by a low-level attack to a recognizable point on the ground, then pulling up into an Immelmann half loop . The computer releases the weapon part way through the Immelmann so it is tossed many miles to the target.

As much as it was ill suited in Vietnam, it did bomb well. America was caught waaay off guard by it's own governmental ignorance by the SAM threat which the President let happen by off limits bombing. The F105 pilots blasted in there day after day after day. Losing nikita almost everytime. Something has got to said for those brave Thud pilots putting ordinance on target, the best they could while being shot to hell
@thetreblerebel4 жыл бұрын
And I also wanna mention the ground crews slaving away on their aircraft day n night to get birds in the air, and bombs downrange. Nothing is for granted
