I was a crew chief in the USAF on F-5E's in the late 70's. Amazing jet's all around. Our pilots loved flying them and our crew chiefs loved working on them. I was a crew chief on T-38's prior so had a good head start. It was some of the best times of my life.

As an air cadets in CFB Penhold Alta. Canada, the graduates of the NCO program in the 70's, were treated to a LOW high speed pass by a cf5 and a cf104. Just thinking back I get GOOSEBUMPS! the pair of them sounded like "tie fighters" from Star Wars as they passed overhead. Then the roar / boom! Fucking ORGASMIC!!!

I saw a standard air show display with an F-5. With this one, you need a starter to get them started. The plane did the same routine as any F-15, or F18. As I understand it the focus changed to a multirole fighter. That means it needs to be bigger to carry more bombs. That's like F-15, F-16, and our F-18. The form is not dead on this fighter plane. Iran's homegrown fighter is basically a homebuilt F5. They have evolved the plane up to the 'Tigershark' level.

F-5 cost per flight hour is very very low compared to all others in US inventory. Also, the Air Force has learned, that putting too many hours on the F-22 will lead to its early retirement, but the pilots still need to keep their hours up, in a high performance jet. The Air Force and US Navy has been interested in 'buying back' F-5's from foreign nations. I think some versions of the F-5 will be around to see the retirement of the F-15, F-16 and F-18... Cheap to keep.

@@everydaydose7779 A lot of countries leaders haven't come to realize, these jets are great low cost per hour to operate, and allow their fighter pilots to keep their hours up... I see Norway just sold off ALL of their F-16's having only F-35's now... good luck with the cost of keeping those nightmares flying, and their pilots hours up where they should be

The Pentagons Joint Chiefs of Fighter Mafia has been draining continuesly the Federal Reserve of their ultra hard earned tax payers blood dollars by continuesly making new technologies that doesnt make any sense at all. Like their fat jet that they push to do ballet, forcing, bribing rich allies to buy those precious 5th generation garbage. They are still even until now clinging begging for mercy for those precious garbage as this old Vietnam relic continues to annihilate their masterpieces the F-35 and F-22 by those little Tigers, the F-5E in every field of operations. One more thing, the F-5 ultra smallish proportios is still the hardest to see on radars or sensors even without stealth technology. Just fly them at near deck level and you got a real invisible, silent death coming to its target even the F-16 cannot do

I was a young teen in Indonesia when the country was looking to modernise their Air Force in the 1980s. They were flying F-5s, A-4s, and OV-10s. The F-20 was considered but they decided to go with F-16. I had a strong opinion that Indonesia should’ve gone with the Tigershark as it was significantly cheaper and easier to operate than the Falcon. Especially when they already flew the F-5s. They probably could’ve bought more for what they spent on the General Dynamic plane.

The closest thing to reimagining the F-5 in today's fighter force is the F-16. The F-5 was perhaps the sleekest, most maneuverable and easiest fighter to maintain to date. Putting the keenest minds in aviation development to work toward revisiting/reimagining this design could yield fascinating and useful characteristics even in today's world.

The F-5 is great plane in many ways, but this video overstates its capabilities and draws shallow and inaccurate conclusions with regard to its air combat results against front line fighters. The F-5 was able to beat these fighters because it was flown by expert instructors under rules of engagement that suited its use as a training aid.

@@everydaydose7779 The F-5 was a great design I'd love to see fly forever, but it does not have the performance to be a ""top tier" trainer in today's world. Most airplanes can be pressed into the "light attack" role, but there are more suitable and less expensive alternatives than the F-5.
@kdrapertrucker2 жыл бұрын
@@everydaydose7779 not really, they had pretty much stretched the Airframe to it's limits with the F-5F. The F-20 was a completely new design. And it gets more expensive to operate the older it gets. Newer aircraft are less expensive to maintain because they designed in modularity and self test capability. You have an electrical fault a modern aircraft, the self test localizes it to a certain box, the crew chief quickly disconnects and removes the box, replaces it, and the aircraft is set to go.

Great for its purpose to rearm poor allied countries, emerging from pre WWII colonialism, still using prop planes for self defense. The overenthusiastic expectations of some that it could be a competitor with modern 4th gen, first line, American fighters that causes argument over this plane. The U.S. uses big fighters for many sound reasons, that is why this plane is outclassed.
