I was an avionics technician in the 84 FIS Castle AFB from 1980 to 1987 and worked on both F106 aircraft in this video. When the klaxton sounded in the alert barn, the F-106 aircraft would be airborne in less than 5 minutes and the sound of those after burners is an experience I will never forget. Great memories....Pat Old

I loaded AIM 4's and AIR-2A'S on these exact birds at Castle AFB (where it appears this film was taken) with the 84th FIS from 1974-1978. Regardless of it's realism it is still great to see my old birds at my old base. Thanks so much for sharing!

Nice to see these 84th FIS birds again. I was a weapons control system mechanic on them in the 60's at Paine Field, WA (where they were the 498th FIS). I went with them to Tyndall AFB in 1967 for William Tell competition. I followed them to Hamilton AFB in 1968 where I mustered out. Apparently they went to Castle AFB in the 70's. Speaking of tigers, the Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (CAMRON) was the 57th and the logo was a tiger.

I've got the book of the same title (The Fastest Single Engine Jet Fighter Ever Built ) but this claim is arguable, at best. The MiG-23 is rated at Mach 2.4, slightly faster than the awesome Six. Whether the MiG was really faster is probably impossible to prove, though it did have more thrust - 28,300 sl lbst vice 26500 for the Six.

The six was integrated into the S.A.G.E. computer tracking system which enabled the aircraft to be remotely controlled to target interception by the computer only requiring a pilot for takeoff and landing. This capability was a bit unstable and rarely used.

I wonder how the j75 stacks up against the j79 in terms of power and performance. I know I can look it all up myself but just thought someone could let me know from their own perspective!
@hckyplyr92854 жыл бұрын
They were very different engines. The J79 was technically more advanced, lighter, and more fuel efficient but the J75 was massive and had way more thrust. With water injection the J75 could generate 26500 lbs of thrust at sea level versus 18700 for the J79 (also with water injection). Really apples to orangutans though they were intended for somewhat different applications.

The J-79 old fricken smokey, built by the Orangutans at GE. More technically advanced than a J-75? That statement is more than debatable.

@@LJDRVR not integral. Weber seats for the 106 were modern zero-zero type, yet still required a BA-22 (or more likely, a BA-24) back-type parachute being donned seperately - either before climbing onboard, or leaving it on the seat to be clipped on after boarding the cockpit.
