@@brianburt58 Yes, that was quite a mission! My most important mission, though, was when I buzzed a Russian fleet off the coast of North Korea. The more I learn about it, the more important it becomes. I got my ass chewed for buzzing the Russians -- the Commander said I was "messing in something BIG". Yes, Russia was thinking of attacking China! It's a bit long, so I split it into two videos on KZbin: "Something BIG #1" and "Something BIG #2".

Thank you for sharing these stories, they need to be heard! My older brother was a crew chief on the Six at K.I. Sawyer in the early 70's. We visited him at the base and were awed to hear the roar and boom of the J75 afterburners! I got to sit in the cockpit of a F-106A and will never forget it! The Six was an awesome aircraft, as were the men flew and supported it on the ground!

Hey, Miller. I was at Det 1, 5th FIS at DMAFB in Az. Small world! I remember Balls 5, also. The MA-1 FCS was a really great asset to maintain parts for (I was the unit's Supply NCOIC.) Great plane and cut trained as a 3rd wiper, also! I cherish our red F-106 Dart patch as well. Tally-ho!

It was a Navy EC-121M from VQ-1, ID PR-22, Call Sign Deep Sea 129. It was also the very last time, that VQ-1 relied upon the 5th Air Force for Air Cover out of Japan. 31 Heroes were killed that day.

About the same time my ship (USS Southerland) and the USS Dale were assigned to protect the EC-121. Worked out about the same, MIG came in, we locked them up with SAM, they left.

As always, amazing historical stories from the good Bruce Gordon. I was also smiling when I saw the photograph of “Balls 5,” the commander’s jet of the 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (5th FIS). As a weapons load crew chief I loaded Balls 5 many times at Minot AFB, ND (circa 1984). Beautiful jet and an excellent unit! Sierra Hotel!

I read a book by a Phantom pilot (forget the title) who was not at all complimentary on the performance of Air Force air-to-air missiles in Vietnam. I'd like to hear Mr. Gordon's views on that topic. Edit: Wikipedia suggests that the effectiveness (total kills divided by number of missiles fired) in Vietnam was about 18% for the Sidewinder and less than 15% for the Sparrow.

Robin Olds, once said, that if you could get the target against blue sky, the hit was very likely. Against the heat coming from the jungle, it was virtually impossible.

Until now I had little appreciation of the agility and capability of F-102/6s, based on conservative armed forces day flybys at Loring AFB. Later at Paris air shows the French Mirages and Swedish Saabs exuded an almost reckless showboaty spirit that let me see how nimble a delta jet could be.

What makes you think they handle the same and are equally nimble? Early deltas were mostly just fast and long range.

@@0MoTheG the F-106 and 102 had systems in them where it moved the fuel into the center gravity to make them more nimble, along with the different shaped fuselage

@@NishnaValleyRailVideos True to an extent. The fuel transfer system maintains center of lift as speed increases. At Mach and above, the center of lift will move rearward, the transfer system moves fuel to avoid the Mach tuck and loss of control. Both the Six and the Deuce could out turn an F-4 except the slatted E model. A delta however, will lose lift in the turn, an experienced pilot will know when to break the turn and take the fight up high where the Delta is king..

Please keep the backstory of the horrific Korean war in mind when considering these cold war events. Consider the tonnage of bombs dropped on North Korea and the staggering civilian casualties. There are never excuses for conflict or wars but that kind of stuff also can't be erased.

@reverse thrust today..they'd lose the war in a month today. The SK military is far greater in men, training and technology .
