But if you were Jeff besos you could buy a decommissioned fighter, f5, a4, even a mig29, training and fly it yourself. No vigorous and sketchy carrier qualification needed. As time goes on im sure older f15 and f16 will come available, but not likely an f14 because of the damn Iranians. Maybe even legacy hornets will become available. Rich guys can fly warbirds, and a mig29 is no slouch. There is also an f4 phantom for sale as well. Me personally I would go for an F5, agile little fucker, or an A4. I spent four years on the flight deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) as a red shirt. I was in the G-3 division which is the magazines where all the weapons are stored, assembled, placed on special carriers (maintained by the G-1 guys, I think) sent up to the deck (that is the G-4 division's job) I began as a mag rat and then went to the QA where I would go up to the flight/hangar deck to troubleshoot and repair things. The guys who actually load the weapons on the birds would sometimes break an electrical connector, damage a stabilizer fin or some other minor damage and I would repair it if I could, or DQ it and send it back down. Several seeker heads on the Sidewinders and Sparrows would get smacked and broken. Flight ops are very hard on men and equipment.

Looking at the carrier landing, I thought I had issues with the (DCS) tomcat, especially after leveling the wings the aircraft tends to pitch up, and that messes up most of my approaches, seeing this clip however, I can see that #1 the "15 to 18 seconds in the groove" thing is bullshit, and #2 the tomcat just does that. It just pitches up after leveling the wings and you gotta deal with it. This video helped me tremendously. Thank you.

DCS is pretty accurate--but I do find the Dutch roll to be a bit exaggerated (or maybe I need more practice!).

Dutch roll was an AFCS effect. All the post-2000 Tomcats were DFCS and automatically compensated. And, 18 seconds is not BS but the 15 seconds was not overly common. I would guess the average boat pass was 17-20 seconds.

I have a question about the f-14, i play a bit of DCS. And stumbled across this video and in DCS the Rio’s display for the radar has a circular look to it but at 0:12 it is square and also has buttons like modern display panels in aircraft such as the F-16 and F-18, is this a design flaw of the DCS model of the aircraft or is this a later version manufactured. In the game you can only fly the F-14B, perhaps this is the A? Not sure if there were any other instalments but would be great to know!
@TomcatCockpitPOV4 жыл бұрын
Great question. The As and Bs originally had TIDs, which are the old circular scopes. In the mid-to-late 90s, the jets started to get outfitted with PTIDs, which are the more modern rectangular displays like you see in this video. By 2000, I believe every deploying F14 squadron had all PTIDs. The PTID could display LANTIRN information-the TID could not (I’ve never played DCS but I believe this is a flaw in the game).

@TomcatCockpitPOV2 жыл бұрын
No, we only got aural cues from the ALR-67, which were synthetic tones based on the category of the threat (e.g., air, ground, etc.). The noise you hear is the ship's radar interfering with the circuitry of the video camera.
