F-14 was an amazing plane and a great purchase for Iran back in 1970's. The plane ended up having the highest kill MiG ratio during Iran and Iraq war.

This was because Iranians can fly better as US guys or Irani guys. Migs are better, but at last its always the driver like in Formula 1. Ferrari was not that good, but Schumacher won always with them, but also on other cars !!!!

@@babathegoodmansamba8533 Nonsense. F14 was an exceptional fighter plane, although to be fair to Iranians they didn't have all the available options on the plane as they had not been implemented by the time the Islamists arrived. The Iranian F14 was only capable of firing its AIM 54 in a single fire mode and could not even fire AIM7 Sparrow and the AIM9L Sidewinder when the Americans left. I believe they also disabled the multi lock/multi launch capability of the AWG9 radar before departing on very bad terms.

@@mossfoobar8322 Looks like you are a bit confused about the definition of TOTAL INVASION! Iraq attempted to invade Iran, which they fought back hard and pushed Iraq out of Iran's territory, and made Iraq sign a peace treaty! If you want to know about how Shah's military purchase paid off, look up "operation H3" which 2/3 of Saddam's air force was whipped out in a matter of hours! Iran air force had total air superiority throughout the war!

@@grandayatollah5655 there is no F14 in full combat readiness. Yes, about 20 are left, but they are just show pieces. No aircraft can sustain 8 years of war and round the clock combat, and come out like new. The Iranian F14s were fatigued 30 years ago, nevermind now. Replacing/updating the radar and the avionics can not elevate a tired airframe to combat ready machine. We have to be realistic, sadly Iran has no viable air force.

@lensman5762
@lensman5762 3 ай бұрын
We have heard all these before. My father was a very high ranking civil servant with some classified duties. Only my mother knew what he was up to. It took years of saving money so that he could buy her a Paykan ( the Iranian made car ) for 21000 Tomans, roughly $2400.00 then. No doubt a few people had obscene amount of money, but as a whole the money was tight for most Iranians. The saving grace was that prices of daily comodities were cheap so people could live a reasonably comfortable life. Suitcases of money changing hands is more like the story of today's Iran where IRGC mafia has its hands in everything from sports to sugar, to technology.

As an employee at Grumman in the 80s i heard a story about an Iranian student who panicked during training and pulled the ejection handle, in the front seat, causing the instructor, in the back seat, to eject first, and against his will. Also, that to impress the king, the F14 took off, performed a loop and flew back along the runway at Mach 1 and 50 ft. The consensus was that the Iranians had some good pilots but their bench was shallow. I suspect it is similar today.

F-14 was basically a naval aircraft, being heavy, expensive and need for modification to become a land_ based fighter aircraft versus F-15 that was designed to be a land_ based, lighter and more manoeuvrable fighter bomber. This came at a greater cost to Iran since US manufacturer was going bust and needed a financial shot in the arm on Iran's expense. F-15 was recognised by many Iranian pilot who had seen the specs for both aircrafts, however it was misjudged and even up to this day, those who were involved in the final decision try to cover up.

Just know that the relationship was so good between Iran and USA at that time, it so contrast with these time situation. I have some question and statement about Iran - USA relationship : 1. Why USA/Grumman gave a total assistance to Iran at that time? Because of Iraq threat? or because of 80 tomcats purchasing by the Iranian? 2. Since when and why USA start to make Iran an enemy? and why Iran has a bad relationship with israel? 3. I surprised that Iranian intructures can spoke english fluently at that time, it reflected the Iranian had a great ability and smart, and they spoke english at all training classes. It's awesome. 4. I think tomcat was very ingrained in the Iranian air force at that time (maybe till these moment) more than the US air force did. So that's why tomcat still in good operation in the Iranian air force this moment, even though it's not in service anymore in US air force. 5. In my opinion, Iranian has a great capability to develop their own technologies, include the nuclear weapon. Those are my few question, I hope you guys can answer it for me. Thanks a lot.

I was stationed at NAS Millington TN in 1974, where Navy and USMC aviation training took place. THere were many Iranian enlisted in technical training classes as well as pilots doing flight training. We sold the hardware and training to Iran. One thing is certain, the quality of their maintenance was nowhere the level as ours, even if they went to the same schools (mechanic, avionics, electricity, etc). Now it is possible Iran has less than 6 airworthy F14s in its fleet.

Americans seems to had a great time in Iran. When they got kicked out, they thought Iran Air Force will not be able to maintain and fly any of their aircrafts, 43 years later Iranian Engineers are still maintaining and flying F14, F4 , F5 and many others. And building there own fighter jets And don’t need the Americans come to Iran and act as they own the place.

I think a combination of Iranian culture and American science & education system would made a spactacular country. if the monarchy didn't failed and the country countinued to thrive ,it would look x10 times nicer than UAE, with all that variety of terrain & all those famouse historical sites and the rich culture, it would have been nr1 asian country on anyone's trip list today.

I always wondered how much $$$$ the US actually recovered from the Iranian contract since these contracts are typically +20 years? If not, then all that coin would have had to have been written off of by Jimmy in 1979.

Actually, the money that the Obama administration gave back to Iran in the "nuclear deal" were progress payments received for the F-14 contract decades ago.
@Christoff1996

The whole contract when signed in January 1974 was 2 billion dollars which I think was the most expensive military sale at the time, although this was to be a 10 year contract which included spares, engines and 714 Aim-54A missiles and the contract last 4 years from 1974 to 1978 before the revolution put a halt to the contract.

Iran paid for her orders in advance. Iran also saved Grumman from bankruptcy. The UK still owes Iran over £1 billion plus interests. The US was paid for 70 F16s that were not delivered to Iran and went to Israel. God knows how much Iranian money is still tied up in the west. The money that Obama paid the Mullahs for the so called nuclear deal, was just a part of what was confiscated from Iran in 1979.
