I spent 14 years building them at Grumman on Long Island, New York ( The "Iron Works" ). It was a beautiful aircraft . I remember when we stuffed the first set of General Electric F-110 engines in aircraft Number #2 Chase (R/D test plane ) it scared evan the test pilot "Chuck" Sewell half to death with the power it produced ! First time I ever saw him shaking! The big cat was built like a tank. I'm proud to have been part of building the greatest Navy fighter, period. Sorry to see the Cat go.

@@michaelmckinnon1591 30G's? That's unheard of. F-16's pull 8.5-9.5G's and is considered one the most maneuverable fighters ever made. F-15s have been reported to pull a quick instant 14G's in combat but, 30G's would absolute rip the F14 apart. USN limited the airframe to 6.5G's although the A/B models did not have accelerometers so pilots in certain scenarios pilots definitely exceeded that by maybe a G or 2. In a true one on one guns only dogfight a F-14 would struggle to fight a F-15, F-16, and F/A-18 Super Hornet, not to say it couldn't beat them which it could and did under a super competent pilot and RIO.
@buckshot7042 жыл бұрын
@@shoutatthedevil189 ; I respectfully disagree. The A-model did have accelerometers. They were located in the main gear wells, mounted on the upper-part near the wing glove. As a Plane Captain, it was part of my post-flight inspection duty to record the numbers shown on these gauges to Maintenance Control both on the beach, and on the boat. That said, I do agree that there’s absolutely no way the aircraft was stressed for 30 g’s. Physically and mechanically impossible.

The F-14D's performance was actually very exceptional and noteworthy. It was the only plane in the fleet that had the required range and payload to carry the Paveway III bunker buster during Iraqi Freedom, hence earning the name "bombcat". Just as with the F-15 the F-14's large airframe and powerful set of engines proved that the airframe could make for an effective multi-role aircraft. The reason the F14D was removed so early from service is because the Navy lied to Congress about how cheap the F/A-18E/F was going to cost, and they also lied about how soon the JSF was going to enter service.

I knew of the "BombCat" when I was in the US Army Reserve component as a attack helicopter mechanic. It was my understanding that one of the main reasons for the "early retirement" of the F-14 was not due to some conspiracy's about GWB or Cheney, but primarily the core of the plane where the wing controls, wing roots and where other critical fuselage components are attached showed signs that most of them, if not all of them, would have to be replaced due to massive wear and tear, corrosion and cracking problems and every one of them would have to be torn down to their base and reconstructed.

Honored to have had the opportunity to have flown one of these amazing machines. I saw my first tommy at a military-themed airshow in 1986 near Atlanta Georgia when I was 16, there for a future service member youth group through my school. I was sold the moment it lifted off the ground and the impact of that horizontal wing span hit me as I stared into the hot glow of afterburners as it rolled left and up into the air. I was originally set however on being a helicopter pilot however I owe my instructors for setting me on another path. What I'll remember most was my first flight in one which was not as a pilot but my first flight off a carrier deck as I sat in the rear RIO seat - and the vibration and sound as we throttled up into clouds and I glanced at the wings as they began to sweep further and further back. The VG sweeping wings were always my guilty pleasure. Nothing looks as graceful or sleep as a tommy in full sweep at high speed carving the air... Then the impending presence she gave from her sheer size and form with her wings in a forward sweep which if you were friendly was likely an unwelcome sight. I'd be lying if the Star Wars loving kid in me didn't come out a few times as I'd imagine in my head "Lock s-foils in attack position". I did not get to make use of much of the firepower at my finger tips as generally my tour of duty was the gulf war and a few years afterwards. We were primarily reconnaissance and patrols above the water which saw very little activity. The most my brothers and I got to do was unloading our 20mm rounds into suspected IED hotspots and even those were few and far between. Regardless it is not an experience to be forgotten and I'm warmed by the eternal love these birds get from those even half my age. In 2008 I spoke with another former F14 pilot who flew these birds when they were still rolling off the factory floor in 1978 and he told me the technology was the hardest part to walk away from. At the time he discharged in 1985 he told me the tommy felt like it was from the future and there was nothing like it in the civilized world. He alluded in 2008 when I met him that he feels like he finally sees technology around him that reminds him of climbing into the cockpit for the first time in 1978. I served from 1990-1997 and I still left with a similar feeling. God bless these old birds.

I am 62 now. As a kid in the late 60s there was a to scale handmade model of both the Tomcat and F11. I of course played with them when no one was around. They were used in presentations to the Navy. My father headed the design team. He retired as the Chief Flight Test Engineer for the F22 Raptor. Funny thing he still worked for Grumman when Lockheed got the contract, but the navy insisted my father head up the project and made Lockheed hire him.

Terminology tip for the "Eng" channel: I noticed you also calling the vertical stabilizers "the keel" in the previous helicopter video. That's not the alternate name we use in English. We will usually use "fin" as an alternate. Just plain old "fin" or "vertical tail" for those aero devices that stick up from the rear fuselage. "Ventral fin" for those that point down, even for those like on T-tail and cruciform tail jets that are there to help with deep stall recovery (Lear jets, etc.) Sometimes you will hear "twin tail" for something like the F-14, F-15, and the like. "V-tail" for the Model 35 Bonanza and the various German gliders "Keel" in aeronautical circles usually refers to an internal structural member that runs along the ventral part, the bottom of the fuselage. This is akin to a keel on a non-sailing ship that doesn't need to tack. The first member laid down when building in drydock.

Many of my fellow Iranians feel the same. Topcat is a reminder of Iran's once a golden era. What did I do that I deserve these pedophile tireheads to be in power today? IMHO - The baddest bird in the air. I worked at NADEP NAS JAX when they were doing F-14D upgrades. Seen several flown in and even a few trucked in (several trucks, flatbeds, and boxes) in pieces. Watched as they were taken apart piece by piece, overhauled, rebuilt, new wiring, engine upgrades, and electronics improvements. The most impressive jobs were pushing out the wing pivot pins and in the assembly side, putting them back into place. Very sorry to see this aircraft retired. But I will always be a fan of the Tomcat.

Sorry for making a long comment but I wanted to add a part to the story. In 1976-1977 there was a program called Aceval-Aimval (air combat evaluation and air intercept missle evaluation). I was part of it on a detachment of VX-4 to Nellis AFB. We took six camouflage painted F-14's over there after a brief 4 week training stop at Yuma, AZ. The program involved our Navy pilots flying missions on the Red Flag range with an AF F-15 group also in sort of a competition and another AF group flying F-104's pretending to be Russians in MIG-like tactics. Our Tomcats had prototype Hughes Aviation optical acquisition devices mounted under the noses that from what I understood were capable of acquiring and tracking multiple bogies in flight with a range of nearly 100 miles. All of our pilots were top gun type quality and the AF guys didn't like us too much because we were at times flying circles around them. Our planes still had the Pratt & Whitney TF30-P412 engines so we spent a fair amount of time on the hot spot doing troubleshooting and trim adjustments. On one particular mission day, LCDR Satrapa was doing a steep vertical climb and both of his engines decided to flame out. He slipped backwards in the airstream and eventually was able to roll over and do an air restart once nose down into a dive to generate enough airflow into the engines. We had both Grumman and Pratt & Whitney factory reps on site with us pretty much all the time as they had to experience first hand what was going on with the aircraft under the challenging test conditions. Using creative maintenance innovations and procedures we averaged an O.R. rate in the 80th percentile at a time when the fleet average was in the 50th percentile. That among other things earned everyone a ComNavAirPac citation when the program wrapped up. And yes, we believed in the F-14 unofficial motto: "Anytime Baby."

@Eric Velasquez Not quite. The biggest reason the USN didn't use it (much - 3 AIM-54s were launched, 1 as a warning shot, 2 failed to ignite their motors due to age) is because the USAF hogged all the opportunities since most engagements were over land.
@dumdumbinks2744 жыл бұрын
@Eric Velasquez Correct. In the Libyan cases the F-14s were not equipped with AIM-54s as they would first have to identify the Libyans as hostile (not at war) and in the time it took to do so back then the Libyans would be able to close to ranges where using the AIM-54 would be a waste. During the Gulf war there were occasions where Iraqi fighters got close enough to threaten the fleet, but they always ran away when they knew an F-14 was in the area after experience against the Iranian F-14s, either because the Iraqi fighters detected the AWG-9 radar, or by the single instance of the AIM-54 being launched as a warning shot.

I was a maintainer on F14AB&D models. WC 110 310 & 320.Then a Squadron Flight Deck Chief. Never looked at the Jet like a Hot woman like many of these comments. Yes it was lethally capable when all systems were up. It was a maintainers nightmare to keep flying. Seemed every flight the Electrical, Avionics, Hydraulics was always faulty. I spent 36 hours once with a (AE) electrician & (AM) air-framer trying to get the AICS system to work so the Skipper could do an airshow demo. The AICS cycles the air inlet control ramps to minimize airflow to the engines to prevent stalls at high speed. This is but one lf thousands of recollections I had keeping this Jet Up. Glad its gone. Hornet had dependability built into it. MSDRS in the Hornet nose wheel well gave you info like your car plug in diagnostics to notice faults in systems to troubleshoot. Tomcat did not have that. So like cars from the 70’s & back you hooked up gauges or test boxes to figure out every problem. Or just chased wires, connectors, grounds, hydraulic lines etc. Its an airplane that had many flaws. Kept us Airframe & Power Plant Mechs, Electricians & Tweeks or IWT(Idiots with Tools) off the liberty line. Hornet guys were leaving the ship to enjoy the adventure of their time in service. We were on the roof or hangar bay working to get the jets up for next-at sea period. Glad the F14 brings joy to many in the public. I saw that joy working airshows. But like many jobs the details are rarely exposed. It was a friggin arduous job keeping our mighty carrier based Supersonic Air Interceptor air worthy with all systems up. We had a disrespectful term for Hornet maintainers as there life was so easy. FA guys. Due to the Fighter attack role of their jet. But we used it in a negative tone like the slur against gay people. Only good comment I have is at the end of my Navy career I worked on Vandy 1. A gloss Black Delta that was for weapons system tests. After years of greasy, dirty grey F14A’s. This was rewarding as those GE F110 engines & MFD cockpit was so much better. The jet had not been to sea so the beatings a fleet jet took this jet had never experienced. It rarely broke and its airshow performance was admired as its sleek (no weapons or external fuel tanks) gloss black & red trim fuselage paint scheme gave it that visual aura spectators admired. So yes it was a good looking jet.The 16 years with my fellow mechanics keeping the Grumman F14 Tomcat airworthy and the fun we created, the pranks we pulled to deal with the arduous issues of this jet cannot be discussed as the world has gone all sensitive since then. Killing was the Jets mission. Looking good was just a fortunate attribute of its design.
