Use a multiplier as a ‘toggle’ rather than a ‘button’, so that with a tap of a key, your joystick changes to a FLIR controller (and vice versa). This means you don’t have to hold the multiplier key down all the time. It’s the boxes at the bottom of the control option page - adding a toggle.

Can you elaborate please? I understand the concept but can't see any "add a toggle" option just a modifier which is what I'm currently using to switch from the "normal" RIO mappings to operating the LANTIRN. A toggle would be hugely useful instead of holding down the modifier (pinky switch in my case).

@@rossb2006 In current DCS in the controls page down the bottom you can select "modifiers" and then add keys as switches or modifiers, a key can be either a modifier or a switch, you can remove keys modifiers if you want to assign them as switches instead

As someone who started learning the LANTIRN literally yesterday, and using the mod to do all this from the pilot seat, this video is fantastic. The visuals speak very well to my own personal learning style. I like to see it. With the modes and systems, i'd say it took about 2 hours to figure this stuff out. Very well done.

Your part showing and talking about using QDes to reference the LANTIRN to a geographic point while being close, then sweeping around for a proper run is single handedly the most important bit from what I learned on this vid. The extra situational awareness, and ability to more quickly re-acquire a group of targets, or vehicles is simply gold standard.

Thanks Cap for breaking it down. QDES is the bomb! Love being able to snap back to a point without needing a computer science degree. The mask line as you pointed out is fantastic. Really like what LANTIRN is for its age.

The first LANTIRN pod went into service in 1987, so it's not that aged. First Tomcats (VF-103) got it in 1996. The amazing thing is how they integrated it into the old cat. Just think about it for a second... that pod has GPS while the plane carrying it doesn't ;)

I struggled for a bit with this only because when I jump back to the pilot seat, jester changes the settings. I would disable jester before attempting this. Great and informative tutorial

I used to repair Lantirn pods. Mostly the Nav pod but I did work on the target pod as well. All our pods went on the F-15 and F-16. When the Navy retired the F-14, we received their pods to strip for parts. The Navy pods were slightly modified from the air force versions. The sniper pod replaces the old lantern target pods. Much better FLIR.

Hey CAP - I think one reason for using a wingsweep of Bomb is that it gives a better LOS of the FLIR to the right and back. I just verified this and when I lost the target I could see my wing so I swept them back and my target in the flir came back, and I did see my wing move out of the way. Its not a huge area but it does allow for more maneuvering than in Auto mode IMO.

Heya Grim, great video as usual. Something happened with the DCS update a few days ago. When in Single player and switching to the Pilot seat, the RIO immediately turns the TID from TV back to Radar/Nav? Every time I switch back to RIO seat I have to change TID back to TV Mode. Any thoughts? This is Killin me.....

I think I've found a nice discovery. The RIO and the pilot commands seem to be independent. Capt'n was using a modifier because he was short on buttons. However, I think you can reuse your pilot buttons in Rio mode. E.g. when you are in pilot mode the 'P' button could be used for parking brake. But when in Rio the 'P' may be used for a different command. Not 100% sure if this information is accurate but give it a try and let me know.

I was lucky and kept my old X-55 Rhino HOTAS after I got the Warthog. So I just use it when I have to use the joystick for the LANTIRN. Then once I don't need it for a load out, push it to the side of the desk out of the way.

@@eatthisvr6 It's on the DCS downloads user files page, just plug in the options mods and F-14 and it should be the second item. I don't think Jester will operate the LANTIRN at this point, and I'm still playing around with integrating it into my HOTAS controls, but it does seem to do the job. Boils down to a question of realism vs playability, but in this case, I'll take playability.

"Q" = "cue": you're cueing ("Q'ing") the the sensor to a particular angle or location. The example image doesn't show slant range because the sensor is set to "point track", but the laser hasn't illuminated the target to designate it yet, so there's no range information.

Highly impressive!! How many pages is the manual? And what page have you reached now? It is now obvious that this plane requires two separate educations - to be en effective RIO is at least as complicated as being a good pilot. You are doing an amazing job here. (What does the union say about 10hrs working days? ;-))

After 2 days of rewatching the video and following the process step by step, I still can't get the bomb to follow the laser, I'm starting to give up

@@michaelbarratt8855 apparently when you lock up a target you have to drop the bomb and go to the Rio seat, then press the laser latched button. If do it correctly, the L on the screen should start blinking, which means the laser is on.

b0zz1ll4 really appreciate your reply! I set it up to Auto and the laser will fire automatically 10sec before impact. Tho, that wasn’t the problem. I had never disabled jester so, once the first bomb released it hit the target about 4/10 times and the reason is jester would switch the mode from ‘manual’ to PLT’ and this mode is not the right one for LGB. I now disable Jester and set it all up my self and the manual mode stays put. I can now drop warheads on foreheads every time. Safe flying amigo.

Jester LANTIRN This feature is rapidly nearing completion, and we are now in the final phase of its development. We will make a separate update on this feature before release. This has been a very challenging task, but we believe we’ve found a good way to make JESTER operate the LANTIRN both quite independently, but also at the pilot’s command and disposal. Weaving this functionality together in an immersive and realistic way has been integral to our efforts. One core component to this effort has been to make a new human emulation system for the way JESTER will actually utilize the LANTIRN controls. This includes simulating the way a human would search an area and avoiding any sort of robotic jankiness. This has proven to be a challenging endeavour. Search patterns that make sense and feel authentic have been developed as part of this effort. Certainly, communication with JESTER is key to achieve your goals. The player will be able to tell JESTER to look at either a Waypoint, coordinates or a map marker, and command the area and size of the area to search in. You will be able to instruct JESTER to e.g. prioritize SAMs or armor or ships - and much more. All in all, we hope we’ve found an appropriately immersive and functional way to integrate JESTER Lantirn, and we hope you’ll enjoy this feature once it launches. Currently, the last remaining items are to record the remaining voice lines required for this and run the feature through a few final cycles of testing .
