The F-15 is design incorporates elements of a lifting body. Same as the NASA orbiter. The loss of one wing is not fatal. Devastating but not fatally so. The problem becomes how to maintain lift and bleed off airspeed for a controlled landing. This pilot did an incredible job.

Captain Kruk Probably not, there are two things I can think of why that f-15 could land: 1. Great use of body lift in f-15 design; although the wings are the main source of lift, the wide body design actually creates lift too. 2. Twin vertical stabilizers with control surfaces at the back of the F-15, making possible of counteract the torque of the asymmetrical lift. The A-10 is a "flying fortress" but it's large span wings are generating all the lift, at its rudder could not handle that. It's mostly about the design and not about the armor they have (talking about landing the aircraft). Aeronautical engineering student.

Anyway, Air Force and U.S.Navy planes in Comox all the time. One time before they retired the SA-3 Viking sone of the guys fro the Aurora squadron brought down the Aurora floppy disk and got the Viking guys to run it and the Viking went nut , shoved out it's MAD boom and wingtips were clicking and everything. Most of the detection equipment on the Auroras came off the Vikings, so it was pretty funny.

guys if the right wing is gone the the plane tries to roll in clockwise direction duo to upward force of the left wing - all the pilot has to do is create a counter moment in the elevators by trying to roll in the counter-clockwise direction -i-e- right elevator -trim down and left elevator - trip up. and use afterburners to create enough thrust to compensate the loss of upward force that has to be produced by the broken right wing. But of course theory and practice are different. Its very difficult to get the uncontrolled roll under control and then fly the plane in the above configuration, as the auto-stabilizing avionics are not equipped to handle such excessive damage. -i-e the pilot has to decide how much trim up/down of the elevators he has to give and how much thrush he has to give based of how the plane is behaving and how much g-force the pilot is experience. Not to mention these decisions have to taken at speed around 800 km/hr, which is quite difficult. This guy is one hell of a pilot.
@TheGribbleNator9 жыл бұрын
It's unlikely that he was going more than 400 km/h and you kind of rambled/said some unnecessary stuff, but yes. The pilot is merely correcting for the change in the flight model. His joystick was probably pulled back and to the left for the remainder of the flight.
@thatguyonyoutube8079 жыл бұрын
It's amazing what skilled pilots can do to regain control, I once heard a story (not sure if it's true or not) but a stunt pilot regained control from an inverted flat spin after a stall from entering a jet stream by bringing the aircraft into a downward attitude to restart the engine and then pulling out of the spin and back into the air, marshals and controllers thought it was part of the stunt
@factnotfictionpeople13139 жыл бұрын
+Karthik Sekar Gee, is that all? .......
@karthiksekar20099 жыл бұрын
+you said his joystick cant be pulled all the way to the left. If he created extra force in the wrong direction the plane would start rolling in the wrong direction and the aircraft would go into something called pilot induced oscillations when he is tries to correct it. Also he is not piloting in vacuum, i.e. he has to compensate for the unbalanced forces the wind exerts on his aircraft. Which is usually done by the avionics which am sure have already failed seeing as he lost a wing. Case in point try driving a single wheel cycle at 150 km/hr - thats what he did. 400 km/hr is still a lot of speed giving him hardly a fraction of a second to make minor changes to his controller. to the unexpected forces action on his place.

I heard that when they told the manufacturer this story that they didn't believe it and decided the plane must have collided with something on the ground during the landing. But there was video of the collision and landing and they had to believe it. Funniest part is that if the pilot knew they didn't have a wing then he would have ejected, because landing was impossible. However, not knowing he didn't have a wing, he just landed it.

Evil Bastard, 1 Feels weird calling you that 2 They are still badass but there are more advanced aircraft out there. Though I'm yet to see a stealth aircraft that can carry an equal payload while mantaining stealth.
@eugeniot.78247 жыл бұрын
Evil Bastard, I agree I wanted to compare the two aircraft in more than 1 way. Maybe the F-22 isn't built to be able to fly with 1 wing (though it might be able to with trust vectoring) but it is made to prevent such damage in the first place. And if anyone is obsessed with payload it probably can take a similar one to the F-15's but it would rather not as that way it can remain stealthy. The huge deterrent to the F-22 is the price tag.

It was moved in the 1700's in front of thousands of witnesses, and is still there in St Petersberg today. It was dragged with no use of machinery or magic, using exactly the same method used by ancient Egyptians...HARD WORK. A concept that Ancient Aliens theorists have no understanding of. The Romans dragged obelisks weighing over 1000 tons from Egypt all the way to Rome. To believe these things were not built by humans requires a level of mental defficiency that borders on actual retardation.
@jeongaugustine32099 жыл бұрын
Ash Scott I never said I don't believe that it was built by humans. I am just proposing an idea on why the history channel and many other people may believe otherwise. We live in the era where supersonic travel is possible and space exploration is possible. Since we are living the era, it doesn't seem weird or extra special. We are fully aware how it is done and how the technology was invented. Perhaps it is the mystery or underestimation of the people in the past that leads some to believe that the giant stone structures were built by aliens or some super natural force.

Excellent aircraft!! In WW2 Germany had a recon aircraft (twin engine flying Eye, I believe it was made by a Arado) they would often be missing wings and huge chunks of their tail even engine and still be able to make it back to base due to the structural Integrity of the design, the Soviets also had a plane called IL-2 Sturmovik which could also take that kind of heavy damage, and the American P-38 Lightning during the war was also known to be able to take very heavy damage and come home, so could the American Thunderbolt fighter ground support aircraft. Holland also had an aircraft that could take heavy damage but they were never able to make it in very large numbers but it was excellent at destroying ground targets. At the very end of the war Italy also made an excellent aircraft which could also sustained heavy damage but virtually none of them were put into full production. Germany also had a heavy twin engine Henschel ground attack aircraft that was designed to take heavy damage that at one point had a 75 mm forward Canon, the heaviest gun mount on any aircraft untill the C-130 gunship. Of course everyone knows the A-10 heavy ground attack aircraft that America has today which on more than one occasion during combat they have lost large portions of their aircraft and still made it back to Base. I love planes, I'm hoping to be a pilot soon myself :-)

Such a perfect enduring design. Don't know how many times I've watched and studied this incident as an aircraft mechanical engineer, it's still very, deeply impressive. And so was the Pilot... Balls big enough to clank. Glad he managed to bring this bird in. Can't imagine the structural inspections that had to be done before the wing was replaced.. if indeed it ever flew again, but being a McDonnell Fighter... I'm sure she did... (I read somewhere, she spent three - five months in heavy maintenance and flew again like new) can't confirm, as Israel keeps her cards close to her chest.

Now An SU27 which has beat the F15 in Red flag and coup india multiple times. The only way you guys could beat the SU30 was by pairing it with indias Mig21Bs... It dominated 1v1 3v3 and 2v2 only not preforming in india usa joint operation training against Canada, The radar did not have capabilities to sync with american F15s which resulted in friendly fire. My top 5 SU27 and its varients including the Multirole F14 Mig29 and varients Mig17 and mig31 are tied (actually was able to get in a cockpit of a mig 17 ) SAAB

The F35 isn't a war machine, its is a billion dollar tech demo, a e-war computer with wings glued on to it. In the UK we are already having massive problems with them. The computer systems are designed by American private interests who will not give non-Americans the source programming to make their own changes. You cant trust the Americans to come out with anything useful nowadays, too much money is involved in their industries, contracts go to whoever lobbies the most. Real military innovation in the last couple of decades have come from Europe and the East, want a plane that can actually take off from a non-sterile battlefield runway? Buy Chinese/Russian, want a plane that can be fixxed in a wartime environment with limited resources? Buy Chinese/Russian. Want an airplane which can sustain massive damage and still be functional in combat? Hell keep your OLD American stock or go to Sukhol.

Can anyone with enough knowledge please explain to me how physics allow a plane to fly with just one wing? Is it because of the tail being sufficiently strong to create enough lift to allow it to maintain stability? Or is it the thrust from the jet engine overpowering the need for lift from the wings and powering through the air? I’m baffled. Hold on, the pilot is just explaining how it kept flying. This is fascinating!
@caimanaraujo4792 жыл бұрын
The thrust of the plane's engine works as a rocket. It throws material behind, which makes the plane go foward. Do it with enough material, and the force foward becomes stronger than gravity, so ot stays level. The wing left is helping, keeping the plane lighter, but probably making it less stable, as the plane stops being symmetrical. The thrust counter-balances that, specially if he was splitting throttle, keeping it balanced enough for it to fly without spinning.
@5ch4cht3l7 Жыл бұрын
@@caimanaraujo479 That's not the main point. The engine only creates lift if it is pointed down (Nose of the plane up). There are many things that helped the plane: 1. High lift - the plane can carry high amounts of fuel and payload, meaning that if it's empty, there is more headroom 2. The body is pretty flat and wide - that way, the plane body will also create lift that is directly on the center of mass 3. Good maneuverability - big control surfaces in the rear help immensely in stabilizing the plane with uneven lift. They have to counteract the rotation that would be started by the uneven lift 4. And yes, high thrust helps too since you can fly at higher level of attack and with higher drag

Love all those who say this is fake because it's impossible to fly on 1 wing. The entire plane is a lifting surface, per design. Extra stability with dual tail. With only 1 wing, you basically have a narrower plane with an offset engine and it's well known that you don't have to be symmetrically configured as long as you can laterally compensate for the unbalanced drag.
