Same thing on my 2013 Ford F-150 . It sounded like a sticky brake caliber or rust ring on the rotor catching the brake pad even rubber on rubber noise . Changed rotors and brakes last fall , no change in sound. Noticed it more in the cold weather. It went away when I switched the truck to 4x4 so I knew it wasn't brakes . Watched the video took a chance and changed the solenoid with new Ford part and it finally went away . Didn't have to replace the wheel hubs . Great video very happy

One procedure I would recommend is testing each of the components with a vacuum gauge before replacing any parts, which may not be defective. If the check valve and the solenoid hold vacuum, then your problem is either a defective vacuum hose in between system components or the IWE actuators themselves are worn at the wheels. For those parts, you can also check them with the same vacuum gauge.
@wildnorthadventures65434 жыл бұрын
I pulled my solenoid off and blew it out with low pressure and some moisture came out . I tested the check valve by blowing in it and it seemed to have a small amount of leakage . I just ordered those parts . BUT ... I did also have a bad wheel bearing and when I replaced it , I cleaned the gunk from the inside of the locking hub mechanism and greased it up a bit before installing the new bearing assembly . It seems to be working ok now , but I don’t trust the solenoid / check valve . $30 on Amazon it’s worth making sure . 2010 f150 4.6

My water pump made the same noise and only when the truck was moving at first. I replaced the water pump and found that the old water pump could barely rotate. The video is very helpful for easy start troubleshooting. The vacuum line split into two lines going to IWE hub after the check valve. Hence both side will hear the noise if either check valve or solenoid valve is broken. This may not help you if you hear the grinding noise on one side only either driver or passenger. If this is happen, you will need to replace your IWE and check the line on broken side for air leak.

Ah...replaced both parts but no change unfortunately. Still sounds like wheels are rubbing against the mud flaps at times. Very frustrating. You mentioned 2 other potential causes: 1. the vacuum lines may be torn (causing a vacuum leak), or 2. the IWE's themselves are bad. Update: Strange, but after I replaced the parts there was no change. Progressively over a period of a week the sound is gone. I made an appointment with the Ford service here after I replaced the parts last week Yesterday I drove with a mechanic and I couldn't replicate the sound. He said there wouldn't have been an air seal leak in the valve if it released air (like in the video and with mine). Anyways, I had the sound for months. I Updated the two parts and after a week the sound is gone. Now i just need to figure out how to replace the plugs on my 2013 3.5L ecoboost. It idles rough. Any suggestions of a brand?

@MrMusic-ob2jj6 жыл бұрын
Chris Looysen I think for '09 the valve was on the passenger side. They moved it to the driver's side on 2012 and up. But it is a shitty design from ford! I don't think it was a good idea! It sounds like half engaged gears trying to rip each other. Drive with your window down for a little while until you figure which end is making the noise. The rotate that exact tire where the noise come from while you have your eyes on the axle, car jacked, and the drive selector in the 2hi mode. If the axle rotate with the tire in 2hi mode then this tells you that there is a slight vacuum loss which releases the iwe letting it try to engage but doesn't happen completely.. and there you go.. trrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise when you start driving but not when you are standing completely still. And there is a video from fordtechmakuloco shows the exact same noise. You can find on his channel. Just search fordtechmakuloco.

For any others, try using a pick to wedge the clip open while pulling. Picks are pretty thin and might reduce the chance of snapping the lock mechanism. In addition, add a little heat (not a lot or you'll melt it, but a heat gun on low in the winter can save a lot of broken plastic parts) as plastic gets brittle in the cold. I've had good luck with this on vehicles from 1989-2015 year models which I'm taking apart, anywhere from 2-25 years after their date of manufacture. Just be cautious with the heat, try it and if you feel too much resistance, heat a little more.

@@mikeyb4642 Nope, the clip says "PUSH" right on the tab you're pulling on. Below that tab, the clip is 2 separate pieces that divide outward when you push that PUSH bar down, so you can pull them around the latch. That said, it looks like a pull bar and I snapped mine right off too (dammit).

Anyways, took it back to the dealership, a Chevrolet dealership, and after going over it for a couple hours they said they had never heard a sound like that before and couldn't find a source. I live in Brazil. My 2011 Ford F150 FX4 has a grinding noise that happens intermittently on front wheels at both sides. The mechanic already changed the solenoid and the check valve (white and blue colour valve). He also changed the driver's side IWE actuator that had a bad diaphragm. He connected the vacuum meter to the vaccum lines and checked the vacuum pressure while driving the truck and got 400 mmHg (15.74 inHg = 7.34 psi). The vacuum generated by the engine was above 500 mmhg. Therefore, we concluded there in no vacuum leak. However, the grinding noise still happens intermittently. On the road, it happens more frequently specially when accelerating. Would you please help me solve this problem. Thanks. Jamil.

I have a 15' with 40k miles, have replaced check valve and both hub actuators. Been to Ford dealer and they checked all vacuum lines and no leaks. Still does it off and on, annoying as hell and been battling it since 20k miles

Do you have the part number for the check valve? The Amazon link listed it as out of stock. Thanks!

I have a 2011 FX4 Ecoboost when I switch it to 4hi I get a check 4x4 indicator on the dash sometimes it goes into 4low even though the switch is on 4hi can't find any info on it to determine what's causing the problem

My 2013 F150 sounds like it has a bad bearing but its only intermittent. If I put it in four wheel drive, drive a short distance then go back to two wheel drive the whirring goes away. Does that make sense to anybody?

Also, could be the transfer case I’ve had this noise since I bought the truck

Good day. I have a mitsubishi grandis 2004 manual 2wd benzine. Having a problem with the car. Whenever i went on a highway and as soon as it reaches 100km. I starts to hear a deep dull grrrr grrrrr grrrr kind of noice coming from the front of the car. Its kind of grinding. If i push throttle to go beyond 100km it disappears until i keep pushing it further but when ever i hold it steady at 100km or above it starts to do that. At speeds lower than 100km i do not here it.. grinding or that grrrrr grrrrr sound comes only when steady.. disengaging gear makes it disapear.. Today i went to 120km and at once pushed the clutch padel and kept it pushed. Grinding dispeared. I ride mostly at 100km and its too much irritating having this grrrrrrrrrrrrgrrrrrr noice. Its loud but deep and dull. I can here it if i am at driving or passenger seat. The car do have 1 front brake rotter which is a bit crooked. Could it be that? Today was at a local workshop. The man said cv axles needs to replace but its a hit and trial.. Can anyone advise what could it be.?? Thanks

Would this show up on diagnostics? Could this happen on a 2005 4.6 F150? My mechanics can't figure out a low growl/ or grinding noise happening while accelerating, but only at certain speeds, but not when applying steady pressure... unless it's at those certain RPM's. I hope you're answering your vids. Thanks...

I have the exact same problem as you. I get the grinding noise while accelerating

Y’all figure out the problem I have the same issue of grinding only when mashing the gas or setting the cruse at like 80 and it will do it pretty constantly especially going up a hill
@toneseeker4968 Жыл бұрын
@@austingreen3691 in my case, I ended up having to put a new air intake system on it about 4 years ago. It seems thie F150s from 2004 thru at least 2008 had a faulty one. It's still my daily driver, and I've had no other issues with it in that regard.

I got a 2014 Raptor , I just recently replaced the entire vacuum hose with a new one , and after that I hear buzzing noise sometimes it gets loud inside the cab while am at a stop placing it on D ? Was wondering is it from the vacuum hose I recently replaced or is from another problem valves ?
@Khaled-tx5xj6 жыл бұрын
Show Me How I just replaced the vacuum hose only on the raptor the previous one was giving out grinding noise , becuase the passenger side had a leak (damaged) + PS still I get a low grinding noise at slow speed I could hear it but when I accelerate a bit more the noise just vanish , so am a bit confused about that .. thanks for the replies

Show Me How I still get a grinding noise even after I’ve installed the new vacuum hose
@emiliobernabe42296 жыл бұрын
Maybe the solenoid and vacuum hose isn’t the problem, perhaps the actual vacuum hub on the wheel is. Maybe this video will help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKLMmal4ebV4kMU

any easy way to tell if this is the issue is if the noise goes away when 4x4 is engaged

Having the same problem. Will start when I first start the truck and begin to drive. Goes away as soon as I put it in 4high. Did you figure yours out? Heard replacing the hub actuator can help too

James Shilhan did you find out what it was? Mine is doing the same thing.
@charlesdavichik19745 жыл бұрын
So if it goes away when put in 4x4 what is it ? I replaced both already
@bamm8984 жыл бұрын
could it be the vacume line going to the hubs aswell ?
@garretthatfield1505 жыл бұрын
What about that vacuum line that runs in front of the truck mines broke but I wanna make sure that it’s a vacuum line for the 4x4 help plz

Anyone know the problem that I have? Just swapped my wheel bearing and hub plus actuator thinking i had a bad seal as well. Noise is still there.. swapped tire first thinking it was that. When I accelerate to 45mph i get a deep humming noise. When I engage 4High the noise disappears. any thoughts?
@GrantGrabert4 жыл бұрын
I had the same noise but a simpler fix worked for me: Remove the little vent cap from the top of solenoid, drip in some lubricant (NOT WD40), replace cap. Started the truck and cycled the 4x4 switch a few times. That's all it took.

I replaced both wheel hubs and this solenoid and check valve and still getting the humming grinding noise only in 2H, when in 4H it goes away. also checked pressure on the lines and they hold pressure. any ideas what else it could be?
@tomlee62634 жыл бұрын
Maybe a damaged or leaking vacuum hose from the IWE to the check valve/selnoid

That's cause you're supposed to push it, not lift.
