F-150 License Plate Bulb Replacement | DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE!!!

I have a 2010 F150, same drivers side bulb issue. Actually worse, the wiring harness on the backside was damaged and pulled from the retaining plate. Also managed to pop off the black cover just like you - guess I'll weld bond that back together.

For future reference...there is a LED conversion for F150 license plate lights on Ebay....built into a replacement plastic housing

Just destroyed the passenger side rear license plate Dart Vader Helmut assembly on my 2010 Ranger XL by trying the tab depress and pop out method. GO FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF REAR BUMPER TO CHANGE OUT THE FRICKING BULBS. The Vader Hat is barely glued to the lower assembly so it is an easy pop off which should not happen. The lower gray clip-on base with notched socket hole is also glued on and don't take much force with screw driver method to separate the two halves. 4100 kelvin, which is just below 5100 kelvin in Cool White LED's, is the way I went because don't want State Inspection failing me on a Too White, Too Bright bulb although doubt if most LED 194's are brighter than 135 lumens which is Sylvania standard. Have fun, Gorilla glue repaired the divorced assembly but bought and installed new Vader Hats for both sides for about $30 delivered to have new assemblies with clearer lenses.

Just bought a 1991 Ford f150 and noticed the license plate lights were out, so I crawled underneath to see what was wrong, and found someone just clipped the wires! Guess it was easier than changing the bulbs???

Go to back of housing and in twist bulb socket if you use screw driver on front housing it will be broken damaged beyond repair

Yeah, I learned that lesson too late and ordered new housings. Not sure why I decided to make things more difficult on myself

Just lay on your back. You can untwist the plug and bulb from inside the bumper. No need to pop the covers off

how did you get the corrosion out of the socket mechanism? I have a bunch of green acid type leak on the inside of the grey piece where the bulk slides into and its not letting the slide in properly

I believe I actually had to replace the socket with a new one from rockauto.com. Mine didn't have too much buildup inside, but it looked partially melted so I went back and replaced it.

This is water plus electricity corrosion. Clean all metal contact pieces with Electrical Connector Cleaner, CDR?, then put Dielectric Grease, 100% Silicone, non-conductive so don't get on any metal contact areas and slather on outside of connector inside bumper and on ribbed o-ring and four pronged seat that holds the bulb. This area and assembly is noted for getting wet on the road and Ford needs to rethink the overall design. Think that water gets under Dart Vadar black helmut into the bulb socket because the parts are so poorly glued together. Also road spray up and into rear bumper recess.

Yeah, after I did it I felt super dumb, the bulbs come out the way they do on just about anything else, it just seemed like they tried to be nice by making that cover removable.
