Unfortunately, the first thing Rivian did with their blank sheet was draw a picture of a gas truck on it! Ford service centers are all over the U.S. Where can I get a Rivian worked on? That is a big plus for Ford. Tesla has been around for a while, but service is still a BIG issue. I may have to be “that person” and address the elephant in the room. *personally* I don’t think the R1T and F150 Lightning can be compared. Here’s why: 1. The first (most obvious) is they’re in a different class of vehicle. The R1T would be technically speaking in a “mid size” while the F150 is a “full size” 2. The price is SIMILAR yes, however, the F150 Lightning does start higher if optioned with the “extended range” battery, and goes up from there in the different trim levels. 3. The market these two models are aimed at seem like they could be similar, but they are entirely different. F150 is for existing truck buyers who are looking to take the next step into the future BUT with some similarities so it’s not too different. R1T is aimed at people who are looking for an adventure vehicle. Something to take off the beaten path and having something brand new and different. 4. Rivian owners are going to be similar to early Tesla adopters, who are buying into a brand they believe in and want to support. Ford buyers will be those who are used to existing Ford vehicles, especially previous gas powered F150s. Maybe even those who are contractors since there are a lot of benefits like having all the on board electric outlets for things like power tools to be used on the job site. Overall, the Ford winning makes sense. Ford is a bigger vehicle, have a higher (potential) market of buyers. It’s more “familiar.” The Rivian, however, being that it’s a BRAND NEW company, are doing extremely well stacking up against a company that has made vehicles for more than a century.

How good is the nav, including charging advice.

I'd like to see something like "This Truck Guy" head-to-head. The suburban guy who commutes, shuttles the kids to sports, needs to pack for family camping, and the Home Depot run. The sportsman who wants to carry the gear and access places for camping, fishing, and hunting. The Handyman who needs to haul material, do chores around the house and the vacation property. Etc. How do these trucks meet the needs of people who need trucks? Couple other things I've not seen. Those unique headlights on the Rivian - how well do they actually work? How well do the lights work in the fog? I'm especially curious as you can't turn off the headlights and run just fog lights on the Rivian like just about every other vehicle. I do that often when the fog is really thick as the headlights are just too dazzling. The bed with the under storage - how robust is it? If you had a load of wood chips or pea stone would it suck to get clean? How does the Lightning stack up in those? While I like the Ford's front truck for access, how well does it work when it comes to holding stuff? With the Rivian, I can load up tents, chairs, roll tables, bags of clothes, and pack and pack and pack until the lid won't come down. How easy is it to do that in the Ford? Any chance of whacking your head on the bottom of the Ford's grill? I actually did that once on my '96 Ram when I was doing some engine work. Gear tunnel is an odd shape. When packing, how easy is it to use that space? What kind of cooler fits that you can access from the rear seats? You need room for the lid to open. Soft coolers would be a pain as the access isn't such to operate a zipper. You guys are in MA. How do you travel to like Cape Cod or the White Mountains? There are no fast chargers in either place that I can see. Unless you overnight with a level 2 available, how do you do it? For example, if you wanted to go to Pittsburg, NH from Worcester, MA to go snowmobiling, the only option seems to be a stop at St Johnsbury, VT for over 2 hours. And that doesn't even include towing the sleds on a trailer. The only Fast Charger north of Manchester is in Lebanon which isn't exactly along the way to anything but Vermont. On the Cape, there is a charger in Barnstable which is rather out of the way if you are spending a week out in P-town or down in the Falmouth area?

I also think Bluetooth phone calls sound better on the ford. I love the rivian, hate to sell it, but certain software things I can get by with the ford otherwise plus the ride and overall build quality of the ford. I love the air compressor and flash light featured in the rivian, the open space in the front of the cabin, but, between what I said plus the financial benefits I'll obtain, I'm just going to role with my lightning until next year, then test out the gen 2, which I do believe solves a lot of my ride quality complaints.

Having the ability to draw more power via AC is all well, fine, and good- but one of the major concerns with both vehicles is battery capacity. How much of the battery is needed when using all the Ford's outlets, or even just using the 240v for a welding job? Maybe Rivian has less outlets because battery technology won't pragmatically support all the outlets on the Ford and wanted to balance having access to AC with the DC needs of the vehicle itself?
