My dad uses the Ford Lighting for construction. It saves him so much money on gasoline. The real answer to see which one is better is on ur usage. The Ford lighting is great if you want a pickup truck but hate the price of gas. It still tows and carries alot. The rivian seems like a Toyota Tacoma but electric. Small but does the job. Probably easier to park especially in the city with decent space to load things. The cyber truck is meant for people who don't actually use a truck. It's more of a status symbol and I think the utility isn't there for most truck user.

No actual towing, I didn't buy my truck just to drive to work. How well do they tow?
@ZipZoomZip9 ай бұрын
@matthewtruitt8077 I've towed various work trailers my entire life, but very rarely out of the local area. All the jobs I have taken are within an hour's drive (because it's difficult to make much money when you have to drive more than an hour each way, each day). But to answer your question, EV's have superior tow dynamics and safety, due to their great torque, responsive throttles, regen braking and solid heft with a very low center of gravity. You will not find tow dynamics like that in any gas or diesel vehicle. This will make towing even right up to the limit, a very easy and relaxing affair with superior control and stability. Of the three EV trucks reviewed in this dumb comparison, the Cybertruck is going to be superior, due to its higher chassis rigidity, relatively long wheelbase and short rear overhang (distance from tow ball to rear axle). Chassis rigidity is what prevents trailer sway from being amplified which is basically what happens with the traditional ladder frame. I have a 2010 F-150 and the trailer needs to be setup and properly balanced or you WILL get trailer sway with heavier trailers because the truck's chassis is very flexy. The Cybertruck, in comparison, will have almost zero chassis flex, like it is hewn from a single billet. It is more rigid than the chassis of a McLaren F1, even a heavy, improperly setup trailer is not going to experience every person's worst nightmare, trailer sway going out of control. That's what causes most loss of control events at highway speeds. Mind you, you still want your trailer reasonably well setup so it will have good braking and emergency avoidance dynamics, but the ability and benefits of a rigid chassis to dampen oscillations shouldn't be under-estimated. The Cybertruck will have a very tight, responsive ride, even when towing right up to its 11,000 lbs. tow limit.

For most urban and suburban environments that is more than enough for daily work and home use. For off-road use, I would change the tires of the Rivian to 33 inch Goodyear Duratracs and it would just fine as my weekend warrior vehicle that goes into the back-country lakes and rivers for some fishing and carrying my ruggedized inflatable fishing kayak. The Cybertruck is the vehicle I want to drive to the local city park for a BBQ with family and friends and use for the 2.5 hour drive to the local ski resorts (i.e. Whistler-Blackcomb from Vancouver!) blasting some 1980's era music all the way there while we sip on mocha lattes! Great review/comparison. Just wanted to point out that you did search for other areas to get more cargo (boxes) into F150 and the Rivian, but did miss a point of storage in the end that you showed for a bit in the video. you could have fit more boxes in the far section of the Cybertruck bed and still closed the Vault. At least three and maybe four more boxes, thus making it the winner. And if you wanted to go crazy, the fold-up second row seats would have made this a total blowout!. Also, don't know if one box would have fit under the bed? In the end of your storage comments while you judged it barely being behind, you actually said "not much in it" about the Cybertruck. A bit harsh for your almost tie. Again... in the end it does hold more. Thanks; and again, a very nice overall presentation.

I have an F150 Lightning Lariat. It is basically an F150 with an electric battery. I love mine. It has plenty of visibility without using a camera. It has a 5 1/2 foot bed, and you could easily install ladder racks or toolboxes. You would have to ask the dealer about changing out the bed. If it could be done, the Ford is probably the one that it could be done on. The battery packs all have long warranties, eight years and 100,000 miles or thereabouts. battery reliability is likely to be high if the manufacturer is warranting that for such a long period of time. Obviously if your battery goes bad at nine years and 150,000 miles, it will be expensive to replace. Pretty much every new car on the road right now has an infotainment screen. It is a matter of how small you can get it. The basic trims on the F150 have a smaller screen.

About a year ago I was debating between the Rivian or Lightning but ultimately went with the lightning because of three main reasons: 1. . Rivian is a fairly new company and still has many obstacles to overcome not to mention we don't know what could happen to the company in years to come. With all startups especially in an inconsistent economy you have to be cautious. 2. . One underrated feature about the Lightning that many don't mention when comparing EVs is that because the lightning is based off the traditional F-150, a majority of parts and accessories are compatible. This makes the lightning one of the most easiest EVs to repair, mod, accessorize, and customize. Most EVs not based off a traditional design would require custom mods and accessories which would cost more not to mention that EV designs other than the lightning keep changing year by year making it impossible to create a market for a specific EV line. 3. . As of today, there are not a lot of Rivian dealerships or repair shops. This can pose a problem if there is an issue with the vehicle and you would need to tow or ship it across country to a Rivian location, meanwhile you can take your lightning to any Ford dealership at every corner of the country. This also affects your ability for mods and accessories too, especially the ones that require professional installation that would force you to ship your vehicle to have them installed.

The horizontal screen works better when you're stuck with only one screen, because it can manage to get that left side of the screen a little closer to the driver. It's also better for watching videos when parked. However if you've designed the vehicle sensibly with a second screen in front of the driver, and you're planning to use the vehicle more while driving than to watch videos while parked, the vertical screen is better in every way. I have the vertical screen in my model S, and the only time I would want horizontal is while parked at a supercharger and watching videos.

It seems like a wonky review. I understand that they did cover driving impressions, but they showed the Lightning and Rivian's range and 0-60 time, but spent more time on the Cybertruck's turning radius and voice operated wiper controls. It was similar to their silly harping on the Tesla Model S Plaid's yoke steering (which is now an option), but they missed the Plaid's unequaled combination of acceleration, comfort and economy for the price. The Foundation Edition Cybertruck's price is high, but it is easy to option a Ford F150 Lightning or Rivian up to that $100K price as well. My take is that this video is mostly just a temptation to go to their website to hopefully see the important comparative information, laid out more objectively.

I echo your comment on the turning radius. How hard is it to put two chalk marks down and measure it? Seems like this is just clickbait - put 'Tesla Cybertruck' in the title for some extra clicks. Really lame 'review'/'comparison', I'd expect better from a 'top' name magazine but apparently Edmunds is not one of those. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the turning radius anywhere, not even in the CT manual. The only thing I've seen of late, is that they recently improved it by 1.9' in a software release.

Today for the first time I've riden in a EV the F150 lightning on a test track I was highly impressed. The acceleration 0 to 60 in 4 sec is sick especially for a pick up. The handling while aggressive driving equally impressive. Its been a true opener and my skepticism almost all gone for the exception of the battery life and charging networks. Other than that performance was great and so was comfort it literally felt I could live in there thats how comfortable and spacious it was

I keep hearing the argument about the steer by wire being compared to a commercial airliner. What' you don't realize, is that an airplane at 35.000 feet altitude, gives at least several minutes to try to solve a problem, before there's any risk of a crash. Driving down the freeway at speed, in heavy traffic, you only have a fraction of a second. I'm all for a mechanical coupling between the steering column and front end, so I can "muscle" it safely off the road, if there's an error.

@@BillyONeal Hard to say. If they were significantly different, I would have expected more commentary on that. As it is, I assume they're roughly the same. Which I'm surprised by. I saw another video somewhere explaining that the electric hummer was the most efficient for towing. I think because it's already a big box pushing air and adding more drag is insignificant. Adding drag to an aerodynamic vehicle destroys efficiency. But to hear that boxy pickups are the same as the angular cybertruck is surprising.

Not surprisingly, the cheapest at the time of announcement and the most eccentric among them turned out to be both the most expensive and the most impractical... Instead, the same newcomer to the business of cars and pickups turned out to be both faster and cheaper. But the F150 is still the most practical from all angles! And this despite the fact that it is built only on the existing platform, which always causes a lot of inconvenience and complications for manufacturers and users. But not this time! Looking at these trucks all under the same conditions (except for the CT not having tires to help range) the range really isn't that different. It looks like should the CT be given better tires it could be very comparable to the F-150

I thought you said trucks. None of those is a truck. A truck tows heavy weights over long distances, can handle a full day the ranch hauling feed and mud, can handle all weather and temperatures without any loss of range or power, and isn't afraid of a battery fire after getting dinged up. A truck has no need for 0-60 speed. It needs to be easily leveled. It needs a wide bed and a strong gate. It needs to be easily repairable with easily sourced/fabricated parts because a truck is used to make money. It needs to have longevity and resale value, because there is an entire blue collar world of contractors, ranch hands, fruit/vegetable pickers, and other day laborers who need cheap, used trucks that they can run into the ground. None of these battery boxes is a useful truck. They are battery powered grocery getters that ought to have a minivan body style instead of oversized pickup styling. At least the Ford is making an effort to be a truck, I'll give em that. They tried to give it some pulling power, despite the complete and total range loss when maxed out. But those other two are a total joke.

Regarding cargo volume ... the F150 can be fitted with a secure waterproof topper (from Leer Inc, ARE Inc, etc) which makes it win the volume-contest by a large margin. Such a topper also makes the truck-bed good for camping. AFAIK, the Tesla and Rivian trucks do not have that option available.

I have really considered a Rivian, there are two things holding me back. Both are mistakes that I made by buying a Tesla. The first is the lack of Android auto, that is such a game changer and I've had it in rental vehicles, I'll never buy another vehicle without it. The second is the vendor lock in for repairs. While I don't for a minute believe that Rivian could possibly be as bad as Tesla for this, the fact that they aren't allowing third-party repair, makes me worry that they are taking the Tesla approach of our way or the highway. In the Tesla that has resulted in the most expensive vehicle to maintain that I have ever owned, along with long delays to get parts or service appointments, and quite frankly incompetent mechanics. I also worry that there's nothing stopping them from following Tesla's lead by frequently removing paid for functionality through over the air software updates. That's not a worry that I have with legacy automakers, they are too risk adverse for that. So despite the fact that the Rivian would probably be the most appropriate of the three for my use, I've come to the conclusion that my next vehicle will likely be the lightning. (It doesn't hurt that the lightning is significantly cheaper, even in the platinum trim)

@@OneEarth-Forever I've been driving a Tesla since 2014, I have no problem with being in the vanguard of new technology. It's not the technology that worries me. It's the our way or the highway attitude that Tesla has, and that I'm worried Rivian is adopting as well. Despite the amazing vehicle, I regret my Tesla purchase every day, I really worry that Rivian is too much like Tesla in all the ways that I dislike. So as much as I like their offering, and as much as it does appear to be the most appropriate for my use case, I'm very hesitant to purchase one as I worry that it will be the same mistake I made on my Tesla. Maybe Rivian will surprise me, but until we start seeing their vehicles out of warranty, and until they've had a long history of software updates behind them, we won't get to see their true colors.
