Ive recently become obsessed with strike fighters that can navigate through foggy canyons with technology other than eyeballs. Everyone is saying not to buy the f15e right now though.

I am slowly combing through this episode, cross-referencing the stories with my electronic & paper copies of Smallwood's "Strike Eagle". Steve, thank you for your efforts! In a golden age of MilAv information, your content is head and shoulders above the rest.

Fantastic. Smallwood's book is superb. Would love to see what you end up with once you've cross referenced the whole conversation.

This is the sort of conversation you’d only find at reunions I reckon. Great to be a virtual fly-on-the-wall for this historic recollection! 🍻

I recorded and intro in which I said exactly this (but I obviously didn't use it). I can't recall an interview where I said so little!

Just rewatched some of this...I have to laugh that when Smy refers to the PSL (Pattern Steering Line) and says he couldn't tell you how to do it today, his gesture with his right hand (and thumb) is exactly the right HOTAS action to enable that mode. Muscle memory is a real thing! And Smy, I'm glad someone was paying attention in radar academics.

Great to hear all you guys! Lots of good laughs....Yogi, I'm sure the citizens of the Azores love being referred to as "that island off Spain". :-) In all seriousness, this was a great reminder of just what you guys were up against in those early days. That you deployed with nothing SEEK EAGLEd except slick Mk 82s, and ended the war pounding targets with LGBs is a real testament to some forward thinking and learning on the fly. Well done, lads. And yes, I'm still pissed that I missed out.

Really interesting to hear these guys accounts of how things really were during the Gulf war. I was around at the time and the public perception of the campaign rarely matches the reality of those who were there. This podcast [just like your others] gives an true insight into events from the people who were there. An accurate, non 'spun' historical record for all. Keep up the good work.

Great stories, especially the fog of war at the start. Sometimes you have to make it up as you go along. At least better than Vietnam where no one could make a move unless the pentagon said so. Keep it up Steve.

I can't understand why one would put bombs on a F-15. Seems like driving a 10000 rpm race car to work every morning.
@10percenttrue2 жыл бұрын
The Eagle driver answer is that you shouldn't put b-o-m-b-s on an F-15!
@stevewilson78192 жыл бұрын
The USAF had air superiority covered with their F15C’s. But with the new technology coming on-line it made sense to develop the F15 into a strike fighter. I’m sure there were officers in the Pentagon that were already planning the end for the F111’s. And the F15E was probably intended to be the heir apparent to the F111’s throne.
