From what I understand, purchase the F-35 requires certain infrastructure that may not be required for other aircraft (physical, cyber, etc). So I can see this being an attractive option for those nations unable to comply with the required conditions for an F-35 purchase. And frankly, unless you plan on fighting a nation with F-35s, the AESA radar on the new F-15s is more than capable to accomplish its mission. But Mover, you are correct. The per unit cost of the F-35 is lower than an F-15EX. If you want ECM and Targeting pods (both included in the F-35), then that adds an additional $8-$12 million to the per unit costs of the F-15EX. F-35 is a good deal and when the maintenance infrastructure is completed, its (F-35) operational costs will be lower as well. But we can’t always get what we want and ANY nation would be well served with an F-15EX/F-15QA, etc.

The F/A-18C can carry a comparable loadout (10x AIM-120 and 2x AIM-9). Might not be all AMRAAMs but still 12 missiles total and the EX gives up the two AIM-9s to get the full 12 AMRAAMs (or could just go with the same exact loadout the F/A-18C can use). I know the Super Hornet can load 12x AIM-120s as well but like the EX it is not in DCS (without mods), and is sluggish compared to the EX with that loadout.

I started working the F-15 when they were painted robin egg blue. Hard to see them over the south west. I'm going to guess that the Aircraft is G-limited to less the 7.5 in this configuration. I remember Israel doing something like this back in the 70s but not all of the pylons had MRIUs, (Missile Remote Interface Units). Their process was to fly to a remote facility and down load the missiles that couldn't be fired, fly a combat mission and return to base for a reload. Using the F-15E as a gun truck for missiles makes it a game changer when paired with the F-35s and drones.

I saw this F-15QA demo at RIAT RAF Fairford back in July. They flew both a clean airframe and a fully loaded second airframe. As an observer, I saw very little difference in both displays as far as any performance penalty that the AMRAAMS had on the airframe. That doesn’t mean to say that perhaps the pilot needed to yank harder on the stick or add a bit more power at certain phases of the demo. I noted a slight lag in the initial take off performance given the extra weight but the new fly-by-wire system soon took care of that. Overall my favourite performance of the show and an aircraft to be afraid of in the combat arena.

The ex is actually almost 600 lb heavier than a f-15e, the National Guard actually wanted a C version and was denied (it would have been approximately 6,000 lb lighter) The F-15E is a very poor dog fighter and I can't see this being any better. If it was me I would have constructive boeing to completely delete the rear seat, environmental systems and all Associated dashboard and equipment to save weight and money. This aircraft and single seat configuration with a 32,000 lb thrust version of these engines and vectored thrust, which was tested on the eagle decades ago, would have been an absolute Beast. The F-15E is always configured with CFTs, which the BRU racks add a TON of drag since they stick out into the airstream almost like speed brakes. That's why the E-model doesn't turn that well and bleeds a lot of energy. The Guard, as I understand it, is not going to fly primarily with CFTs on the EX which should make it much more maneuverable. The clean QA variant at RIAT turned on a dime in the minimum radius turn.

@@core_of_winter F-15 Cs have conformal fuel tanks too, they are still 3 tons lighter. The core single seat aircraft is significantly lighter than the E version. That is why the National Guard wanted a single seat version called the CX. An f-15c will fly circles around an ex.
@core_of_winter
@core_of_winter Ай бұрын
@@CColumbus The only C-models that flew with CFTs were the ones on alert in Iceland and Alaska decades ago. Eliminating the back seat isn't gonna save that much weight either. If anything, Boeing would put fuel there like the A/C models had. The B/D models took a fuel hit with the addition of the back seater. It wouldn't be cost effective to return to a single seat model either. All of the foreign customers want the two seats, so two seats it is. I believe the EX would outperform the C-model too. It isn't just about weight. The EX makes up for additional weight with the powerful GEs and that fly-by-wire system opens up the flight envelope significantly. Everything is more crisp in handling with the EX. Pitch rates and high AOA capes will also make it a better BFM machine.

@@core_of_winter Eliminating the back seat ejection seat, dash/instruments/wiring and environmental controls would eliminate at least 1000lbs of weight. At least. On the CFT's, Thats becuase the last time Eagles had to have the range that they do now was back during the cold war. In the Pacific, against the Chinese, Eagles of every type will definitely be using CFTs, if they want to be relevant in a Taiwan invasion scenario operating from bases in Guam, the Phillipines, etc. Ironically, F-15E's flying out of Keflavik today do not carry CFTs, since they have been forced into the air defense role due to all the C's being completely worn out. The F-15E is a very heavy aircraft and a very poor WVR fighter, so the USAF has had to remove them in order to make them credible as air defense fighters. Something the E was never intended to do.

And we don't know (publically) if there's any efforts going on to intergrate the AIM-174b onto the F-15EX yet as its a navy led missile program and they focused on making it work with the Super Hornet. It reminded me of the Ukrainian Flanker display in a lot of ways. All about a big imposing aircraft being thrown around and looking a beast. Nowhere near as agile as the lighter fighters, not disappointing but I preferred the Danish F-16 display to be honest. Air show flying isn’t really the Eagles forte. The EX is truly in a league of it's own, not quite an F-22 but is definitely the pit bull in the corner the the enemy must consider because she's coming at you and there's nothing you can do about it.

People talk a lot of smack about McDonnell Douglas. And how their merger ruined Boeing. But the F-15 was done right from the start. It only needed a little love after 50 years to bring it into the current state of the art, among the 4.5 gens.

Well I hate to bust that notion but they bought it when they bought McDonnell Douglas. It was capable of many of these things all the way back then when it was designed. McD even designed the strike eagle in house before the airforce asked for it.

Wonder if the plan is to have this be a missile boat parked 100 nm away, while a F-22 or F-35 gets lock and ID. My grandfather was project manager at Hughes Aircraft for the AMRAAM. Miss you granddad, glad your work is still flourishing.

So simple concept. Take an excellent already in service fighter that's still in production, adapt state of the art new technology and updates to it and make it current time capable part of the fleet for MILLIONS less than the bloated F35. There is no reason all current F-16s, F-18s and F-15s that time out couldn't be replaced with these updated craft, let alone a proper trainer to replace the T-38. Great video. Something tells me the reason Boeing's Airline quality issues haven't bled into the F-15 or F-18 is probably because of the excellent local leadership and staff at that St. Louis plant (McDonnell Douglas leftover standards being maintained).

The pitch meeting for the EX/QA program probably went something like this: Boeing: “how many missiles do you want?” Buyers: “you ever play Ace Combat?” Boeing: “say no more.” Saw the QAs demo at RIAT, oh my! Both loaded and clean configuration, it still performed to the same degree, remarkable machinery. As said, Boeing have had a rough time lately, but at least they’ve got this right.

Why don’t they just make a Boeing 737 variant that carries like 150 AIM-120s or something in a big rotary missile bay and just throws them in waves at the enemy? Like just an airborne guided missile destroyer
@Philistine47
@Philistine47 Ай бұрын
If you're going to convert an airliner to spam AAMs, you _really_ want something with longer range than an AIM-120 - otherwise all you've done is create another big, slow, high-value target. AIM-174B might be starting to get into the ballpark.
