We were about to approach the runway when the pilot pulled over to the left to allow this little scramble.
Pretty awesome!

First 3 jets carried centerline fuel tanks, depending on runway length, they only require MIL power takeoffs. The number 4 carried wing tanks, they usually require afterburner takeoffs.

@jbower9312 7 жыл бұрын
They may launch all at once, but the jet wash is probably not preferred on takeoff. Flying in a war zone vs a civilian shared airspace the rules may change a little. The last one had two wing fuel tanks and he may be the flight lead, just a guess. He also has more fuel capacity. If linking up with a air born fuel tanker, the flight lead would typically fuel first and then a 2nd time after all his flight wing topped off, this also depends on enemy threats and mission goals.

This is Tucson International. Those are the Catalina Mountains in the background. The Ad Nat Guard operates the 162d TFW from the airport and handles all transition training for the Air Guard and the A.F. Reserve. Also handle transition training for foreign users (about 16 countries). This was a training mission, which is fairly common. A-10s operate out of Davis-Monthan A.F.B. which is about eight miles to the northeast.

For them to keep their instrument qualifications, they have to use their instruments to land at dissimilar airfields ('unfamiliar') so that they rely only on instruments rather than instinct. I'm sure this was probably why they were 'transient' at that airfield rather than DMAFB.

Heheh, it does look funny. :) But yeah, it's the signal that he's "in position". You seen the head motion repeated up the line to the lead. Then you'll see the lead jet do a chopping command, with the element lead (two-seater) twirling his fingers for engine run-up/ on brakes.
@Tac0Tuesday91

spins321 I could say I know a lot about military stuff but I'm not 100% about how they communicate. I know they use signals but I'm not sure
@spins321
@spins321 7 жыл бұрын
Hahah, yeah they do look funny. Fighter pilots use alot of head and hand motions as they try to minimize radio comms. I'm more familiar with Marine/Navy signals, but the head knob just basically means "ok", and in this case, they're acknowledging up the line that they're all together, in position, ready to go. When the lead gives a signal, they pass the acknowledgment down the line again (more head bobbing). Being a 4-ship, they're split into 2 sections, with the section leads being on the left. So, you kinda have 2 bosses with the main boss being in the front left. The second boss twirls his finger to tell the last guy to run his engines up to get ready to go flying. It's really neat to see hand signals. it's even cooler to see pilots use their entire aircraft to signal to wingmen of formation changes or turns or what type of turns to perform. :)

This isn't a scramble. They have test missiles under the wings. You NEVER fly test missiles on alert status. If anything, they were just late for their takeoff time (99% of the time) and tower just allowed them to go first.

I was flying out of PDX in Portland to go a funeral. My flight was interrupted by 4 F15C's then right behind was 3 flying gas stations (KC-135's), and then 3 more F15C's behind the KC-135's. It was fun to watch as soon as the turned the corner they stood on it and they were gone. Didn't bother me 1 bit! Been on and lived on an aircraft carrier back in the day.

Had a similar experience in India earlier this year at Pune. Was in a Viastar A320neo about to depart for New Delhi. We were about to taxi on to the runway when suddenly the pilot pulled the plane up and four Indian Air Force SU-35 fighters taxi past. The roar of those twin engines on full afterburner rattled our plane. I had a window seat and a great view.

A was taking a little commuter flight in a Q400 from Portland, OR to Spokane, WA a bunch of years ago (2008?) and while boarding/on-the-stairs a pair of Oregon Air National Guard F-15s took off together. Oh man the noise! I felt awkward holding up the folks behind me so got to my seat in time for another pair taking off...what a sight, and the plane shook! I suppose most of those guys are retired military and probably airline pilots themselves. Paid to turn kerosene into noise--way better than flying a school-bus to wherever and back!

Best flight interrupt story ever.... I was assigned to Barksdale AFB LA. a SAC base (Strategic Air Command), a buddy of mine was taking flying lessons at Barksdale, and had flown with his instructor to England AFB LA, near Alexandria LA. which was a TAC base. (Tactical Air Command)... As my buddy was taxing out to takeoff from England AFB back to Barksdale AFB, he radioed the tower, and they tower put 2 F-4 Phantons on HOLD.. at the end of the runway. "Hold for SAC aircraft" (SAC ALWAYS have priority on all Air Force runways) my buddy radioed back, while taxing his Cessna 150, it was fine for him to release the F-4's he would go second. The tower insisted that SAC go first. My buddy taxied out in front of these 2 F-4s, with their engines screaming... He got up as fast as he could and turned out of the way. moments later the F-4s came screaming by...

I don't see it mentioned anywhere here, but this looks like Tucson Int. Civil aviation shares that airport with the Arizona Air National Guard, 162nd Wing. This is common to see for anyone flying in and out of that airport. Even inside a well insulated passenger plane the roar is overwhelming. A couple of times my flight was held back by as much as 45 minutes owing to the fighters doing numerous touch and goes. It was quite a show

Was waiting to take off out of VPS last year (Fort Walton Beach FL, which is also a military runway), the pilot never told us but in front of us were 2 F-35s waiting to take off. One at a time they went screaming down the runway, full afterburners. They shook the entire Airbus, it was a seriously cool experience.

Get a landscaping job on an Airforce base. I was cutting out some brush and bushes around the jets' wash station the other day when an f22 taxied out onto the run way and I had the opportunity to watch him take off from about 70 yards away. It was like a drag race times 10.

There are blue stripes on the other Sidewinders, indicating they're training rounds. If you see a yellow stripe where that blue stripe is, usually accompanied by a brownish/'rusty'-colored stripe further down the length of the missile, that's a live round carrying a live warhead with a full load of solid propellant.
