For anyone that wants to know what's going on. At 3:05 the mig just flew straight, making no attempt to rate the F16 while the F16 flew in behind them. So clearly they deliberately put the F16 into an advantageous position at the start. Everything from that point onward, though, seems legit. It's mostly a rate fight (turn rate) with both aircraft attempting to outturn the other (flying around in circles). The F16 is in a favorable position, but the Mig-29 is sitting inside the F16's turn circle. Basically, it's not enough for the F16 to point the nose AT the MIG, but has to point the nose in front of the MIG as it's a moving target. The F16 just can't get its nose up enough to take the shot. At 3:50, the Mig-29 sees the F16 isn't in a position to shoot and reverses the turn, attempting to force a more favorable scissor fight, but abandons that plan after realizing he can't get away with a second reversal. From then on it just goes back to the rate fight until the F16 finally gets the shot at 5:20ish. They break off shortly thereafter.

Your explanation is not entirely accurate. The setup at the beginning is for high aspect BFM (basic fighter maneuvers). They start out together at the beginning and then make a hard 30 degree turn away from each other to get separation. That is when the F16 goes out of camera frame. Once separation is achieved they turn in toward each other for a head on pass. Which is when you see the MiG roll out and fly straight and ignite the afterburners. You don’t see the F16 doing the same thing because he is outside the field of view of the camera. Then they merge and start a one circle fight, meaning they turn in the same direction away from the crowd. After that it is a pretty tame turn circle fight since they are so low to the ground and a crowd of people. Real BFM is much more drastic with lots of vertical.

@@rl7487 Every aircraft has an optimal airspeed at which it has its highest turn rate. The F16's optimal turning speed is really high. So while the turn rate in degrees/second is excellent, the actual radius of the circle is quite large (because it's going so much faster). Which is why you see the Mig-29 always inside the F16's turn. Also, yeah. a 9x would have ended that fight a lot sooner.

@@turanamo Nah, unless there's a huge difference in turn rate between the two aircraft these kind of fights tend to be quite slow and drag on like this. Keep in mind that there's only a couple of degrees/second difference in peak turn rate between these aircraft so unless someone screws up it usually takes minutes to resolve. That's kind of just how rate fighting work.

Only an incredibly stupid or immature person would believe this is a "dogfight" ... it is a choreographed airshow display, nothing more. Neither aircraft even APPROACHES the limits of its speed and maneuvering capabilities. No mock dogfight would EVER be authorized over an audience. Too great a risk of collision, too great a risk of pilots losing altitude awareness and impacting on the ground. Even to host choreographed/designed airshow events costs hundreds of thousands in potential accident and liability insurance. Do you think any agency is going to insure a completely random event? Don't be childish.

This was an air show, not a real fight. In real fight, the pilot of MiG29 wouldn fly like on his first solo. An average pilot of MiG29 have a lot of good firing solutions thaks to schlem. And F16 jockey will not fly with external fuel tank in real doghfight. This was a nice flight show, nothing more. So cool down and enjoy

Russian Fighter Jets have ALWAYS had the Smoke issue. Not good in a Dog Fight. The MIG 29 is a Truck compared to the F16 is a Ferrari! Russia has always built for speed. I have photos of a Mig29 I took at Salinas,Ca. airshow,up close.... I was suprised at the control surfaces. The were fitted like a tank, strong but not as clean as could be....They have always made machines for a very harsh climate.

First mig29 visit to North America was at an airshow in BC Canada. Mig pilot got lost on the way due to bad weather, poor coms, and no co-ordination with local ATC. A CF18 was scrambled to find, and guide him in, with fumes left in the tank. Russians thanked the Cf18 pilot by letting him fly the mig the next day ( it was a two seater). His debrief revealed the mig was slightly better in most flight categories, but had inferior avionics.

You’re not remembering it correctly. American F-15 pilots guided them in from Alaska through BC down the the Abbotsford Airshow (there is video of that) which is the only one in BC that has jets. The rest is some made up Canadian Folklore.

@@GBLynden According to a pilot who was there........Migs overnighted at USAF Elmendorf Alaska. Then flew down the pan handle with Eagle escort. Eagles are relieved by three cf18s out of Comox BC. A USAF AWACS was providing over watch, but Migs were under guidance from civilian ATC. When the Migs lost coms with ATC, they resorted to hand signals and did a close formation descent through 30,000 feet of cloud with the three cf18s, led by Major Bob Wade RCAF. The Migs landing at Abbotsford while cf18s return to Comox due to live weapons restrictions at civilian airports. Hear Major Bob Wades story on coldwarconversations podcast. Quite interesting.

I can't speak for the MiG, but the B-52 has what's called water injection. By adding water into the fuel mixture instead of a combustible fuel, you can achieve the same thrust properties without the added costs or danger, while running a more lean mixture. What you see coming out of the B-52's engines is actually mostly water vapor. I know, it looks a lot worse than it is.

While deployed I would see B 52's from time to time. They smoked all the time more on heavy take offs. Between '80 and '82 we started receiving F-4S's to replace the J's. The S models had an airframe and power plant change. Leading edge slats and other AF changes and the "smokeless" J-79. Those still made more smoke than the GE F-404's in the F-18 that I later moved to. The water injection on B 52's was new to me here but not surprising. The AV8B's also used water to aid thrust. R/S

The Cobra is a nice airshow maneuver but would be near suicidal in an actual fight. Anything that uses up energy / kills airspeed is a very bad idea. Though it is possible that one could cause an overshoot with any number of energy absorbing maneuvers, the more likely outcome is a missile or cannon shell up your tail.

In a dog fighting situation, you don't make cobra unless you're at sure shot. Plus, those pilots the only thing they're doing is just flying in circles to test the aiming a bit, good pilots will use the clouds and the plane capabilities to position at shot. The Mig-29 can clearly shot down an F16, it has better technology BUT, the piloting counts a lot.

Note that the only time the Mig didn't smoke was when he was in afterburner. The 2nd generation fighter tables have turned. Before, the F-4s smoked in Mil power and the Mig-17/21s were clean. Now, the Migs show their positions like a beacon and the Viper is the hard one to spot.

bigmac So now you are contradicting yourself and saying that the Poles, who are not friendly towards Russia, told the pilots: "Make sure the old Russian plane we got for free beats the F16 we just paid millions for".... Maybe you should watch the video where the new Super Hornets wargame with those same MIGs when the Germans owned them and couldn't beat them until the German pilots told them how to do so by staying out of IR range and use their modern Radar and Radar missiles against the 30 year old Radar systems on the MIGs, which as they noted would not work against modern MIGs which have exceptional Radar systems and Radar missiles. Maybe you should read the Luftwaffe pilot who was the former squadron commander of those same MIGs where he says at under 20km he is unbeatable in the MIG against anything we have including the newest block 50 F16... Aircraft good enough that Lockheed-Martin bought the plans to the YAK41 back in 1991, Americanized it and called it the F35...

I concur that the F16 didn't pull enough lead to get a shot until just before they broke off (it's why the fight ended), and would like to point out that they clearly set up the fight so the F16 started in an advantageous position. That said, the comments you're referring to about under 20km were made pre Aim-9x, when US fighters lacked high off boresight IR missiles of their own. The ability to aim missiles at crazy angles just by looking at the enemy was huge for the time. Realistically, US jets now have that same capability in the 9x. You can make a decent argument for the Mig-29 in a guns only dogfight, but realistically the US's AMRAAM is superior to anything the Russians can field and the radar also been upgraded since then. Realistically, US jets would win the fight 90% of the time before it ever came down to that 20km range and the biggest advantage German jets had with R-73's high off boresight capabilities isn't really a factor anymore.

The 29 was built to counter the 16, and the 29 is a good plane. But I'd rather be in a 16 when the shooting starts. Mig 29's have been shot down, but no F-16 has ever been shot down in an air to air engagement.

that's right! But idk how much you know about aircraft but i'm sure you would agree that avionics and pilots training are a huge factor in combat! The only time when the mig 29 met western aircraft in combat was kosovo (Iraq 1991 i think that the iraqi pilots were not so good...) where may be an f 16 was shot down by mig 29(?) and about half of serbian mig 29 were shot down by allied aircraft (5 i guess) But we (the west) could see them way before they could see us, thanks to the AEW aircraft (the aim 120 were guided to targets through data shared with AEw planes). But Venezuelan pilots when they were ask to choose between the mig 29 smt (not the mig 35 they'are different) they did prefer the f 16 and ask for a better plane than the mig 29. So it is impoderable wich aircraft it is better than the other. Just remeber this in the vietnam war mig 19s shot down f 4 and over Lebanon 1982 mig 23 shot down f 15s and f16s...

A highly loaded wing has little capacity to produce additional lift, and so has limited turning ability, whereas a lightly loaded wing has much greater potential lifting power, so increasing the lift increases the turning performance, with that said the MiG 29 has a lighter wing loading,LERX,leading edge slat, and a 'tail' between the two engines which produce incredible amount of lift, the f-16 has only LERX Aircraft with low wing loadings (more lifting ability in general, doesn't have to be only the wing loading) tend to have superior sustained turn performance because they can generate more lift for a given quantity of engine thrust. an example is Convair B-36. Its large wings resulted in a low wing loading, that this made the bomber more agile than contemporary jet fighters besides the MiG 29 has smaller radius in the video(pause at 5:17- 5:18) , that because both the turn rate and radius are affected by the speed of the aircraft, and since decreasing the speed decrease the turn rate and turn radius, if the MiG increased it's speed it would have increased it's turn rate while it's turn radius would have been equal and since the MiG 29 has a turn rate of 28 deg/sec while the f-16 has a rate of 26 deg/sec , the MiG would have raped the f-16

Walk up the canopy? Not sure what you mean but angle off target matters more than position. Radar is in the front, missile light off the rail forward, guns fire forward. You can be looking at your opponent's exhaust trail all day and still be unable to shoot. Most missiles can't be fired under high g-load anyway, imagine all the things that could go wrong while a 500lb rocket is sliding off the rail at 7, 8, or even 9 G. It would be exerting a load of 4500lbs on the rail. On paper it would be a very even fight. Likely it would come down to pilot skill, and missile technology. In a quick fight it it very even, but in a drawn out scissors/turning fight, I favor the -29 simply b/c it has more fuel, can use afterburner more, and maintain energy.

The F16 was designed as a short range cheap compliment to the F15 with emphasis on manuevtability for close in dogfighting. The F35 will usr it's highly advanced radar sensors and avionics as well as it's stealth to have a first look first shoot capability to offset it's lack of manuevtability. The idea is the F35 will have detected the enemy aircraft fired it's missiles and would be heading home before the enemy even knew that it had an aim120 D fast approaching and about to blow it out of the sky.

During the Indo-Pakistan 1999 Kargil war, the Pakistanis (who are better skilled than USAF pilots) refused to even fly their planes against the Mig-29s of India (bespoke for India of course). India achieved total air superiority in the theater without any challenge from Pakistan & its F-16s whatsoever. When Pakistan requested the USAF on Pak bases to help scare away the Indians, the Americans gave permission to USAF pilots to help if they wished - not one, not a single USAF pilot dared challenge the Indian Mig-29s in the Skies, while the Indian Mirage 2000s & Jaguats kept slaughtering the Islamic militants & Pakistani soldiers who had entered Indian territory in the mountains of Kargil.

respond to MrMcGiblets1 -After the disintegration of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact NATO’s Germany inherited Soviet Mig-29s, which were, naturally, thoroughly analyzed. Then it was discovered that in combat, provided that the MiG-29's 7.5g above 0.85 mach can be avoided, it should beat any F-16 due to its BVR capability, higher thrust/weight ratio and lower wing loading. The exercises between USAF F-16 and German MiG-29A's showed that in ACM the greatest advantage the MiG-29 was its world’s first helmet mounted sight coupled with the AA-11 Archer which gives it a kill zone greater than any aircraft serving.

The F-16 with it's AIM-120 AMRAAM would get the first shot with it's BVR because the AIM-120 has twice the range of the mig's AA-10A Alamo 25km. The MIG suffers from high energy bleed off the F-16 can hold 9G turns longer then the mig. The helmet targeted AA-11 is good if you can find a target that doesn't know the mig is around once the target pilot knows and evades the AA-11 can be defeated fairly easy by the maneuverable F-16.

Zbyszkoz Still have the smoky engines. Russians have always had junk engines. Visibility is poor as well in the mig the 16 cockpit is way better. The mig can't hold 9G turns. Now the US has the F-22 which is way ahead of anything Russians or China has.

This F-16 looks like one of the later model variants with the additional external conformal fuel tanks. I would like to see how one of the earlier F-16s without the added weight and drag of the conformal tanks would maneuver against the MiG.

Indeed remarkable: the sustained turn radius of the Mig-29 seems to be better than that of the F-16. It's a well published fact. The other fact is, that the Fulcrum A runs out of fuel much faster than the Viper. The Fulcrum remains a testament of sound Russian engineering every bit as much as the F-16 is of sound US engineering. In the hands of able pilots, the two are a close match. Especially when the Fulcrum has more modern avionics than the original A-version. No propaganda.

The only one advantage Mig-29 has over F-16 is that it has slightly smaller turning radius at low altitude where air combat rarely takes place. However, as altitude & speed increase, F-16 decisively gains an upper hand. F-16 is best known for its agility, aka, transient performance, an ability to quickly & seamlessly change from one maneuver to the next. Although, F-16 is rather an old design, as far as agility is concerned, it is still second to none.

You make a semi-valid point. Actual close-in dogfighting will certainly not be the preferred MO for most fighter aircraft, but realistic BVR (beyond-visual-range) engagement ranges are nowhere near "hundreds of kilometers" (even though the brochures of missile producers will often state ranges in excess of 100 or even 200 km, these are often the maximum ballistic ranges if fired from max. altitude, certainly not realistic ranges against maneuvering targets, let alone receding targets). That said, in an all-out war between two first-rate air forces I'd still expect there to be a fair amount of dogfighting.

Thats not true. BVR combat has not proven to have rendered WVR combat obsolete. This was proven true in Vietnam. It was proven true in Desert Storm. Im not optimistic that it has improved enough to render WVR combat obsolete yet. And probably never will, unless aircraft are armed with lasers.

Let me state this 1st.. I love the F-16... one of the best turn fighters in the world to this day. However, I am unsure how the 16 would fair against the 29 in a vertical fight. That would be fun to see. However, like the dogfighters of WW2 you must know your aircraft. These 2 pilots do...My hats off to them :)

All fighters produce just as much smoke but western fighters have fuel additives to reduce it! We believe that the extra smoke only serves to giveaway a pilots position more easily so we choose to do something about it.

Older engine version of the Fulcrums which left smoke trails behind. Polish Air Force seems to be cheap ordering older versions :D We got MiG-29A and 29UB, most common initial or downgraded versions or twin sited training models.

The Yanks did get the shock of their life when the East German pilots destroyed them in a death match. They stole the technology and adapt it to their F35 program ...
