This whole thing is made up of multiple different F/A 18's , for a start, two of the F/A18 are from opposing carrier fleets, one from the Pacific Fleet (designation NJ) and the other from the Atlantic Fleet ( Designation AB) also the dog fight scene is between a Swiss F/A18 and a German Mig 29, not a US F/A18 as the author has exclaimed. The training operation that the US did with Germany in was called Red October (October 2000)> The footage you see of an F/A 18 with the designation VFA-163. ID NJ-106 was actually a Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet flown by Burnett and Stackhouse in the movie Behind enemy lines.... Thank me later

For the F-18, it was absolutely unrealistic to intercept the MiG-29. The maximum speed of the Mig -29 is 2450 km / h. The maximum speed of the F-18 is 2000 km / h. The practical ceiling of the MiG-29 is 18,500 meters, for the F-18 - 15240 m.

Max speed is not the limiting factor it's the fuel, radar and weapons. Missiles travel faster than either aircraft. And max speed is using burners and can only be maintained for a short timeframe before your fuel will become an issue. The Super Hornets will fuel from another Hornet after takeoff so the chances are pretty good that they will have more gas to burn. And the superior radar in the Hornet will enable them to spot the Mig29 much earlier giving them a very important advantage.

If it sits Russian pilot, it includes a superweapon, and if the American, it just flies without maneuvering, like a normal American aircraft, for example, the same F/A-18. I know about this Training. Normal East German Pilots against US Topgun Pilots. The Kills was 9 to 1 for the East German Pilot. The US pilots complained because the German pilots had flown maneuvers that were not allowed. In a real fight, ervery maneuver is allowed if you want to survive. If you fly standard maneuvers your opponent knows, you will be shot down. The US pilots were only bad losers. Just as a reminder, Erich Hartmann had 352 confirmed kills in WW2 because he did not abide by any rules.
@charlesbowman1296 жыл бұрын
Hartman would start his attack from 5,000 meters above the enemy. He stated that he believed 95% of his victims never knew he was there. He also would get extremely close before opening fire. This tactic resulted in him having to bail out thirteen times because his plane was damaged from debris. Although he was proficient in combat maneuvering, he was not a fan of the turn and burn fight. His tactics were hardly revolutionary. He was smart, savvy, and aggressive. His strategy was dive down from above, shoot the enemy down, climb up and do it all over again. This was the same tactic Claire Chenault taught the Flying Tigers to use, with great success, against the Zero. It is the same tactic used by Naval aviators in the Pacific as it played to the strength of their aircraft. Don't fight the other guys fight. Same mindset used by the British in the Falklands campaign.

You nuts? MiG-29 were only given to elite East German squadrons (24 MiG-29 vs over 300 MiG-21/MiG-23 for the rest of AF) while most American squadrons that took part in the simulation were greenies. 510th FS that was the first to fight MiGs was a reactivated unit since 1979 with no previous combat record since its reactivation until 1993 when it didn't get into any air combat. VFA-106, the first Hornet unit to meet MiGs, is a downright training units mostly consisting of student pilots. And Top Gun is a name for a NAVY program, not USAF. What kind of maneuver couldn't East German use? Cobra? And how's possible USAF pilots were mostly restricted to WVR fight?

Actually in this particular drill the Mig 29's of the Luftwaffe trashed the US Hornets scoring almost twice as many kills as the US fighter aircraft. This led the US to rethink their dog fighting techniques and apply adjustments to the Hornet to make it able to overcome the Migs. However it needs to be stressed that in this particular match up the German pilots showed better fighting skills than their US counterparts.
