I work where we manufacture avionics for these aircraft. Imagine highly sophisticated electronics that have to endure going from sea level in a high humidity, salt air environment on a carrier to 35,000 feet under tremendous catapult launch loads and temperature changes from 100 degrees 100% humidity to -40 degrees dry thin air in a matter of minutes without failures and you begin to realize why these things cost so much.

The best burner climb I ever saw was with the old CF-101B Voodoo back in 1983 with 416(AW) Sqn of the Canadian Air Force. They did at dusk and did a burner climb to 40,000 feet, winked out, then climbed to 45,000 feet and went into burner again. This was the mission they would use to intercept Soviet bomber of the era. Too bad no one has restored a Voodoo to flying conditions, just the bang from lighting the burners is worth the admission at an air show.
@Devil3R3 жыл бұрын
May have been neat to see but the Eagle Blows away the Voodoo in Climb, 16 too for that matter, But the 22 is the king of intercept now...And will be for a while I believe.

Russia currently doesn't have any stealth bombers. The backfire (Tu-22M), however, is a supersonic bomber. That makes it hard to catch, especially when the F-22 is a very short range aircraft. You don't have much time to chase before you're getting low on fuel for the trip home. The F-22 is only 120mph faster than the backfire, so in the time it takes to take off, climb and catch up the bomber has put serious distance between it and your airfield.

I was lucky enough to witness this same exact type of test when stationed at Edwards AFB. First they launched a F-16 off the runway. To my uninformed eyes it looked like he took off, gained the necessary airspeed then climbed as fast as he could at about a 60 degree curve. At that time It was very impressive to me how fast this engineering marvel reached that altitude after takeoff. Then an F-22 strolled on the runway, took off, gathered speed for a few seconds then it went damn near 90 degrees vertical in an instant and leveled off at the same altitude as the F16 in what seemed like a quarter of the time. I swear to god it looked like some anime gundam type stuff.

Looking at the stats the F22 is bigger and heavier than the F15 however it has a slightly higher thrust to weight ratio, less wing loading and far less drag. Obviously performance would be relative to load out for either aircraft but I'm fairly certain a stripped down F22 going for the record would easily be able to punch through the F15 times using its 70k pounds of after burning thrust. Either way they probably won't release any information about its actual performance for many years.
@r088007 жыл бұрын
Mark C. The F-22 is over 7 ton heavier. There is nowhere you could strip that amount of weight out and still call it a Raptor.
@Prometheus2037 жыл бұрын
Yeah but at full after burner the F22 engines generate 13 tons greater thrust.

More. The real thrust is 39-40K per 119. It would eat, fully stock, any time by any F-15. Or any other platform for that matter.

Black bird was a dog at low altitude compared to the F-22. For it could not break the sound barrier at low altitude. It’s engines are turbo jets/ramjet (which are more effective at high altitude) and most of the thrust was created by the inlet and bypass doors when it becomes a ramjet. Not saying you didn’t see a blackbird climb fast, it is a fast machine, just not F-22 bad ass. It ain’t pulling g’s like that going vertical. I live near a base that houses F-22’s, F-35’s, F-16’s and F-15’s. NOTHING CLIMBS LIKE THE RAPTORS, every time I see them practice these unrestricted takeoffs, I stop and watch, it’s incredible.

Dave Lloyd the rate of climb for a raptor is 350 m/s, while a f-15 has a rate of 254 m/s. While both are absolutely insane the raptor surpasses the f-15 by quite a bit. It can theoretically reach FL 350 in just over 30 seconds.

Actually, no one felt it was worth trying to set climb records after that, so no one tried. However, according to fighter pilots, the F-22 on FULL fuel and weapons can go supersonic right off the deck, so it's climb rate is enormous. One pilot actually went vertical while subsonic for the fun of it and said the Raptor was trying to break through the sound barrier and was told by his controller that he had unofficially shattered every climb record in history. It could climb even faster if it went supersonic prior to the climb.

I'm pretty positive there has never been a F15 lost in combat. At least a US F15. Not sure about the ones a handful of our allies use.

Sam S only a single f15 has been downed. It was in use by the Saudis

Sorry buddy, but airliners do not fly over Edwards AFB..furthermore, when this F-22 got to 35,000ft, it created it's own contrail...
@mainilla2687 жыл бұрын
You've been burned, because Edwards is restricted airspace! lol

Skyes9 Airliners do occasionally fly over R-2508, the EDW complex, but usually after normal business hours and on weekends. Done it many times with clearance from Joshua Control.

That is so amazing. Just think of the practicality of this maneuver. They can get from the ground to intercept altitude in under 2 minutes.
@jgdooley20033 жыл бұрын
WW2 Spitfires took something like 9.5 minutes to get to 28,000 ft. Back then that was considered blindingly fast. Modern jets airliners climb at around 2,000 to 3,000 ft per minute.

This happening in reverse was the last thing many enemies of american ever saw. Notice how quickly it turned into a spec and then vanished. That's how much time you had to get your family and everything you ever had of value to hell out of your house before a napalm shell landed on it.
