On the 40th anniversary of Lindbergh's flight, a new reproduction named Spirit 2 was built by a movie stunt pilot, Frank Tallman. It first flew on April 24, 1967, and appeared at the 1967 Paris Air Show where it made several flights over Paris. In 1972, Spirit 2 was bought for $50,000 by the San Diego Air & Space Museum (formerly San Diego Aerospace Museum) and placed on public display until it was destroyed by arson in 1978.
Film donated by the Ryan Aeronautical Company to the San Diego Air and Space Museum in the 1990s.

I met Eric Lindbergh at Fun ‘n Sun and spoke to him about recreating his grandfathers epic flight in a Replica Spirit. He had just finished his flight in a Lancair/Columbia and he hinted that with his brand of youthful-onset arthritis this was all he had the energy for. But for years I’ve dreamed of a redo of this flight...!!! As a 14 yr old boy I read all of Lindberghs bios and he was my aviation hero. I had a dream of building a scaled down SPAD13 with a flat head FORD engine in it, inspired by the 1937 Aero Sport low wing monoplane...!!! As I grew in hotrod knowledge I realized that while it ( the FLATHEAD)was a nostalgic icon of the past !in 1961 I found the BUICK 215 engine to be the answer to my dream... it was the lightest production aluminum V8 engine in the world. Years passed as I got married, had 6 kids ( no,I’m not CATHOLIC😉)did a three year stint in Central African Republic as a bush pilot, came home at 42 yrs old and realized that it was time I built that Spad...!!! 35 yrs later I’m 99.44%done. Many times I got discouraged and I felt like quitting and each time I sat down to see The Spirit of St Louis for the umpteenth time and my flagging courage kicked back into the PERSISTENT mode...!!! Wish me luck...!!!

Most certainly. My osteo-arthritis makes it a bit of a stretch getting in and out of most cockpits let alone doing Eric's flight.

I too admired Lindbergh as a young boy of 8 years old and read every book about him. In 1957 my Pop took me to Roosevelt field Long Island and got to see the newly built Spirit of St Louis replica that was used for the movie. The guards even removed the ropes so that I could peer inside the cockpit, I was thrilled. To this day I enjoy watching the takeoff scene in the movie. Lindbergh is forever my hero

This is in the 1960's or 70's, because tennis shoes were not invented until the 1950's

Can you believe someone would burn the beautiful recreation intentionally? For insurance, no doubt? I mean, it's not like a bunch of rioters sought it out to set it on fire. Sickening.
