These aircraft were built to do different missions. One is a long-range interceptor, and the other is an attack aircraft.

Unit cost and supply chain are major factors. Like their navy ships, the Chinese are willing (or forced) to compromise on expensive features in favor of quantity. Once the undisputed world leader, the United States can no longer keep up with modern Chinese weapons production. Unless a war with China is quick and decisive they could possibly gain the upper hand through sheer quantity. Finally, range is also a big factor. Modern Chinese fighter appear to out-range US fighter aircraft, especially the F-35.

Take away the F-35 datalink..which amusingly enough the J-20 has the capability to do..and the F-35 is in trouble. The F-35 sensors can`t actually see other stealth equipped aircraft..downside to the low probability of intercept features..while it does make the radar slightly harder to detect it also cripples it in the modes required to pick up another stealth. Force the F-35 back onto its own capabilities and its basically screwed. Just remember US forces don`t even train with their datalinks turned off EVER...the loss of the datalink is so unthinkable they don`t even consider that could happen. The Chinese appear to be training with the assumption they won`t have datalink available..so they use it when they have it but crucially have experience training without it. The American assumption of electronic arena dominance is going to bite it in the ass.
