Put the electrical cage button on your throttle HOTAS and hold it down while maneuvering. That will eliminate the need to take your hands off of the controls / pausing to employ the mechanical caging lever. Track with the pipper on the target for two seconds, then release the electrical caging button. This works with both air and ground targets. Also, if you have it in auto release mode and the electrical cage button is released, the bombs will auto release when at the release altitude. This is how it was done in real life on both the Saber F and F-84E.

I was just wondering about the caging/uncaging in a dog fight while aggressive maneuvering is going on.

I just picked the Sabre up in the Steam sale. I find it to be a pleasure to fly after bouncing back and fourth from the Tomcat to Spitfire. that radar with the red light is very crude, but it certainly gets the job done. I feel like auto release, and picking up ground targets with the radar to be pretty advanced for an early 50's era plane. Auto ranging with the gun in air to air is also pretty impressive. It is also very fun ripping apart Migs with this bird. I am going to have a great deal of fun with it.

I definitely agree with that.. It was so good that the Russians copied it. They also took things a step forward and set up the first Radar (emission)Warning Receiver and placed it on the Mig-15Bis to alert their pilots when they were locked up via Sabre's radar. Sirena was a direct counter to the Sabres radar lock. You should read the story on how the A-1CM gunsite was created.

100% agree.. the Sabre in DCS feels exactly the way it was explained to me by an RCAF pilot. "Flying the sabre after the prop fighters was like switching from a ford to a ferarri." I absolutely love this aircraft not just because it was used by Canada :) but also because it perfectly straddles the line between WW2 style dogfighting and modern day dogfighting. You have enough radar capabilities to use your ammo more sparingly and good enough missiles to just out reach your guns, but you dont have the ability to pick up a target at 60 miles and fox on him before he even knows hes in the fight.

I would suspect the reason for caging the sight is it's gyroscopic. Mechanical at that and doing 'crazy' maneuvers you run the risk of gimble lock and causing a tumble. if it's caged you can't gimble lock. I gyro tumbling risks damaging it.

In the real sabre there temporary cage button is on the HOTAS and apparently you're supposed to hold it until you get on your glide slope or until you slot in behind a bandit and then release it but I find that to be a pain even with a ton of buttons on my hotas so I just bound the cage/uncage lever to a button on my hotas and I use it the same way but without having to hold it down

Did something change with the F-86 in the recent year or two? I used this video to learn how to bomb in this thing years ago and had zero troubles being accurate or at least really close to accurate with manual bombing. Now, I miss 100% of the time. I even tried automatic bombing using various videos and I can't even get the bombs to come off the plane anymore. I still love flying the plane because at least the rockets still function properly and accurately but the bombs not working is a real bummer.

Could you guys possibly do a comparison between the sabre and mig 15 and/or the warbirds? Trying to make some difficult decisions on a budget.

Yup we are doing that but a while off still.

DCS is one of the most realistic programs out there because the modules are based off of real performance statistics from official sources (numbers stated by original manuals from the aircraft manufacturers). The systems are also very realistic because of knowledge from the original aircraft. The flight modeling is often judged by real pilots of the aircraft who make the controls feel realistic. The F-86 here is from the 1950's so it wouldn't hurt the USAF to release its information. The F-22 and F-35, however, are today's premier flagships of the USAF. Releasing any critical information would compromise the effectiveness of these jets since other countries now know exactly how they fly and fight. Even the jammers of the F-16 in BMS are still simplified because the real jammers are classified. Thus DCS cannot make a realistic module for the F-22 and F-35 due to lack of information.
