I'm not going to knock people who want ice, but I'd love for them to try it side by side like this to know for sure if it's really what they prefer.

I'm Irish and enjoy a drop of whisky, preferably Scotch. I was taught early that ice ruins a whisky, glad to see that knowledge being shared!

Does shape and size matter? Ice chips seem to help me stay the game later while using a single ice ball puts me on the bench early. Don’t want to dilute too much but it is a challenge to find the balance. Cheers!

Tiny chips are fine. Melt quickly and don't impact flavor as much

Chris mentioned the round ice cubes. What about the reusable plastic ice cubes that don't dilute the whiskey? What about keeping liquor in the freezer? I keep cheap stuff in the freezer but, I've never been a fan of ice in higher quality options.

i have found that the plastic cubes tend to impart a little flavor no matter how well they are cleaned. i will use stones or stainless cubes when i'm drinking at home.

I love ice and 1 oz of water in my whiskeys under 30$. I can drink 10 high forever with this combination. Of course the better whiskeys I will drink more raw.

Was the large or small blocks of ice? Size matters in this instance

Actually size doesn't matter. The temperature of ice is the problem. Shape or size plays no bearing

i feel like the king cube/ball in an old fashioned is ok. like mac said, it comes down to personal choice. with the old fashioned, there are other things going on and more layers of flavor present, so cooling it down has a different feel than drinking whiskey neat. if i'm doing an old fashioned at home, i tend to use whiskey stones to chill it without dilution, but i'm also using 2 kinds of bitters and a demerara so i want all the full flavor notes to come out without diluting them.

Do the experiment yourself. I have done this with thousands of customers over the decades. Never had one say I was wrong afterwards
