"be who you really are" Em literally rapped about being bullied and a skinny white kid from the trailer park. Benzino saying Em acted like he was something he wasn't. Please. The reason white kids flocked to Em was because he was directly relatable to them.

@3D Winters u stating facts. I respect Em skill. But he DEFINITELY got a pass. I never was impressed by Nail in a coffin. He never went against a rapper who was a beast in his prime. And when u say some of the things he said against Benzino in print or on wax and they don't like each other he can question how real he keeps it. And I've only nodded my head to ONE Benzino song. Benzino is part delusional, not that talented and he used the Em situation to get shine. BUT....that doesn't mean he was wrong in everything he was saying. Shit....most of the comments right now are KILLING Benzino without even acknowledging any wrong Em did. That's sad.....

Em is from Detroit and nothing about him was an act, he got in fights all the time back in the day, infamously in 99 at a show in San Francisco, dude was carrying a lot with trying to provide for his daughter and dealing with a tough relationship with her mother, plus being doubted bc he was was white, he was no punk and plenty of ppl in Detroit that ran with him had his back, he wasn’t afraid for anything to pop off

He got his ass whooped. He didn't get "into fights". I'm a 5'5 dude and as a kid I was whooping dudes way bigger than me. He never stood his ground. Was always a victim... He is not from Detroit either. He lived in a lot of states. Detroit was the last city he lived in before he got signed. He's not from Detroit. I live in Romania. If I go to the US and live two years there I can't claim I'm "from" there. LOL wtf are u talking about?

@@andreivictor293 stick to your stories in Romania because you know nothing about what you’re talking about. Saying he only lived in Detroit right before he was signed he lived in Detroit, practically his entire life, and saying that he never stood his ground, well, you’re not qualified to speak on it. I’m a tell you a little story. Suge Knight showed up at the recording studio when 50 Cent was making “In da Club”, and Suge was rolling hella deep with close to 50 Mexicans from 18th Street (A major gang here in Los Angeles, and has close to 50,000 gang members between the United States, Mexico and Central America. They are allied with the Mexican mafia ) Bang Em Smurf received notification from Sha Money, XL the Suge outside of the studio waiting to cause problems. All kinds of real ninjas started hiding under tables and looking for cover, but not Marshall. He went out there with Smurf, and three other guys. Marshall had a bulletproof vest on, but he went out there to stand up to Suge and all the vatos. 50 stayed inside. So just worry about what’s going on in Romania, because I was in Los Angeles when this happened. I live in Los Angeles, part of the year, and in Montreal the rest of the year. Tony Yayo speaks about this incident often, and calls, and then Eminem a “Real Ni99@“. So I’m sorry to be the one to call you out on your BS, but the stories you are hearing in Romania are not accurate. Phukk BenZero

"Now that there's a white rapper, nobody is going to buy into black culture anymore." Speaking as a middle-class white kid from rural Vermont who grew up about as far away from inner city rap culture as an American child in the late 90s and early 2000s possibly could, being exposed to Eminem's music had precisely the opposite effect on me. If it wasn't for listening to Eminem, I never would have listened to Nas, Outkast, Wu Tang, Ice Cube, Eric B and Rakim, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, 2Pac, Dre, DMX, Snoop Dogg, Biggie, and the list goes on and continues to grow. Buying The Marshall Mathers LP close to fifteen years ago was a watershed moment for me as a music listener and opened the door to the incredible world of rap and hip hop for me in a way that I could only ever begin to describe. Eminem is a legend, and Benzino is a footnote.

Eminem was the tide that raised all boats. He wasn’t taking away from hip hop, he helped deliver it to an even more mainstream genre. Late 90’s/early 2000’s, hip hop took over as a dominant genre, and Eminem played a role in that. While this mindset is dying off, you still have the Buddens and Benzinos of the world that still want that deep racial divide. Those days are over, and hip hop has spawned - for better or worse - a multitude of sub-genres in the meantime. And btw, Eminem himself included many lyrics indicating his explosive success was partially his race, so I don’t think anyone has ever denied that the labels were licking their chops for a white rapper. But you can’t ignore that he also happens to be one of the best lyricists of all time.

“If you were really selling dope, then what the fuck you stop for dummy? If you slew some crack/You’d make a lot more money than you do from rap” Eminem wasn’t dissing Benzino for being on the streets and selling drugs, and despite what he says here, Benzino knows that. He was dissing him for being a failed rapper who acts like he’s an authority on Hip Hop music - despite the fact he probably made more money selling those drugs than he did selling records. I do acknowledge a lot of the points he makes here about racism in the music industry, but the problem is this; At that time, Benzino wasn’t calling for more equality. He wasn’t fighting racism. He was exploiting these issues in order to try and win a rap beef. That’s why no one takes you seriously Benzino. You did too much shit. Shit that didn’t just damage your credibility - it obliterated it.

I’ve never cared for Benzino, still don’t. He is making a couple points here worth taking in for sure. Some of it feels like a big reach but about the Culture? Ya, I’m feeling that... I think there needs to be more content and I like how the guys hold him accountable here but Benzo ain’t really wrong about concerns about white people going after this culture. Happened in the past... as a white dude myself I prefer what I grew to love about the music and culture in the 90s. I like Em, he fell off for awhile, M2BMB and B side I like but I prefer the culture how I found it. Predominantly black artists and the black experience. It’s important for us to learn and this culture can be this avenue. We talked about this in the 90s too. I do think the Stans but dudes on a pedestal and there is definitely an argument made that Em don’t belong up there. He a great rhymer, he’s made excellent records and terrible ones but he’s also rated too high by some.

You can’t say anything about em without the stans running to his rescue. They don’t want to hear a fair judgement of his music. It’s just Eminem is the best cuz he’s white and that’s it. You can’t compare him to any artist cuz they just not trying to hear it. It’s bias. In any beef it’s an automatic w for em so it takes the fun out. To say em isn’t played in the hood isn’t saying that he can’t rap. He can rap but he isn’t played around the same ppl who make rap... and it’s true, I don’t see young black youth listening to Eminem. Only white kids. And even then they listen to this new wave Em. I’m talking recovery and on. Nobody listens to Stan, sure it’s creative cuz of the writing sound in the background but it’s wack af. Love the way you lie is weak like cmon bro. Cleaning out my closet... mockingbird. Get that sentimental rap outta here. I can go on and on. So many weak songs but he’s the rap god. Which that is a weak song too. em hasn’t had a good album since Eminem show. He’s been wack since curtain call. no replay value. Judge his music the same way you judge anybody else. We can’t act like every bar in every song is that good. Like we’re not going to act like lose yourself is the greatest song just because it was on 8mile. Stop. He can rap he can rhyme but all this extra is just bias af. The problem is that most stans don’t know what’s cool about hip hop they just know shady like he’s the first and only rapper

As a 18 or 19 year old then, I admittedly was on the Eminem train during that beef. As a 36 year old man today, I totally see where Benzino was coming from. That was a losing battle going against the "Great White Hope" at that time. The Black struggle in the music industry goes all the way back to Elvis, and the Blues singers then. Whites are the majority in this country, something like 75%, so it was inevitable for Eminem to become the highest selling Hip-Hop artist, because he's White. He was a dope lyrical White boy on the mainstream stage, since Vanilla Ice, and that had appeal. Street dudes are not going to be able to relate to an Eminem album, he never claimed to be a gangsta. He's not a tough guy, but he surrounds himself with dudes that are. At the end of the day, Em is definitely one of the nicest lyricists, but he's not the best to ever do it. Royce is on the same level as Em, in terms of lyricism, but he'll never get the shine he deserves, because Blacks don't support our own like we should either. That is an entirely different conversation there.

Seriously tho, not trying to pander but people need to realize everything great about Eminem exists because he's a product of all the artists in hip hop that came before and during him. They cannot really appreciate Eminem because what makes Eminem great, his type of storytelling/rhyme schemes/cadence/flow/passion is present in other rappers too in different ways that have moved the genre forward. If they are blind to it in other hip hop artists, they do NOT see it in Eminem. They see his skin color or maybe the message, but not what makes him a great MC.
