Isn't it marvellous?! A true Donatoni classic. So glad you enjoy FD's music. I used to use this piece an awful lot when I was teaching at KCL.

THis piece is made of various interacting sections in which variable subsets of instruments tend to act rather vertically than in a contrapunctical way, under a kind of complex ostinato of the piano. This makes a sort of tone link betwwen these contrasting sections, both in tems of instrument succession but also in terms of writing and style. This ensure both necessary musical changes and a principle of unity and continuity..Some sections sound rather static ar slowly moving like "repetitite" Amarican modern school while other ones are much more animatedand could be heard as influnced by the so-called "Darmstadt" school mixed with more "traditional" textures. Sometimes, Ligeti seems to be "somewhere" too. The miracle id thet wa don't have the feeling of a musical patchwork, but on the contrary od a mysteriously but strongly structured music.
