Regarding driver's license: Because she has an international driver's license she is able to get written test and road test so soon. For people without international license, they have to wait 12 months after passing the written test, before they can do the road test (even after being taught by a driving teacher ). That means people have to wait one year/12 months to get a driver's license in Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton and other Alberta cities).
Benson, good job! Your brainchild of "9 days cross countries immersion programme" is intriguing and set one's mind in profound mode. Please have more of such videos❤

Thank you for sharing. Hope you all have a better journey in life
New life is always not smooth sailing. Kathy’s current job does not match her job skill, she has to hold onto it until she gets a better one. Hong Kong was no longer the country she had grown up in. It is true that Hong Kong is no longer the Hong Kong it used to be. There’s been an absolute mass exodus, Hong Kong has really suffered a huge brain drain. I love her saying “溫水煮蛙”。 Gritting her teeth and sticking to it. Only those who have endured the most difficult hardships can find a route to success.

Welcome to Canada. Calgary does has lots more to see. You should come back again in the future with Ruby ... to experience the scenery of the Prairie, ie Banff and Jasper. Greetings from Saskatchewan

That why it is not worth to move to Calgary as the price is getting higher. I would rather staying in bigger cities with more opportunities, and not that extreme weather in Calgary .
Excuse me, please explain what exactly is wrong or bad about seeing Chinese writings, like simple characters, everywhere. Living abroad is not easy at all, especially in a country which you are not familiar with. I hope you will settle down smoothly and according to plan. Good luck from down under.

Those guys are self-loathing hongers who think they are not ethnically Chinese.

I agree that this line does not sound appropriate to many (esp to Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese). But there are a few layers behind this line which i would hope you understand: 1. Kathy is not a scholar, analyst or politician. She is a normal civilian like you and me. She speaks on her own behalf freely to me as a friend. It is normal for any person to have subjective feelings. 2. On preferring not to see too much Chinese: Some people migrate in order to be relieved from his/her original culture. Asian (or Chinese) cultures surely have their merits but not without down sides. Here Chinese characters kind of "represent" that "original Chinese culture". 3. On particularly pointing out "Simplified Chinese Characters": With #1 in mind, I humbly invite you to also think from a HKer's perspective. We grew up learning and using Traditional Chinese. In a sense, gradual replacement of Trad Chinese by Simplified Chinese implies the shifts in Hong Kong that have been happening these 2 decades, which inevitably leads to discontents from at least some of us. Anyway thanks so much for your best wishes to Kathy :D

@@roman618Your use of the word "self-loathing" probably has some assumptions which I do not agree. However I have to agree that your opinion is probably one that a lot of ethnic Chinese (even some in Hong Kong) share. Ethnicity is perhaps more of a "biological" concept in our context. In this framework, like Singaporean and Malaysian Chinese, or even those who grew up in Western countries, I cannot and do not deny we are ethnic Chinese. But there are many concepts available to define "groups", "people", "nations". And these concepts are more flexible than the Chinese word 國 or 族.

Sure, having said that, I really don't care if the CCP Govt is liked or disliked by some of us, simplified Chinese has been adopted as the formal official form of Chinese by this Chinese Govt. And none of us would have the ability to change it. I was born and brought up in HK by my HK born parents, and traditional Chinese was the only form of Chinese that I learned during my school days in HK. I would hate to see and hear any conspiracy theory that the incumbent CCP Chinese Govt is going to replace Cantonese and traditional Chinese by Putonghua and simplified Chinese, respectively. This is the HK culture that we all would like to see to prevail, regardless what could or would happen to China....

@@fandalousie3731 Yes, Quebec made the language law so stringent and working environment so toxic that you have the freedom to leave if you don't speak French. It affects not only new immigrants, but those anglophones who were born and raised in Quebec. Here are some examples: All immigrants receive only 6 months of English service from Quebec government unless it is health care related. In 2024, tuition of out-of-province Canadians or PRs, attending the three English universities in Quebec, will be doubled. With passing of Bill 96 into law, all small businesses (with 25 employees or more) must conduct their business in French. Quebec is going after T&T for not having French labels on Chinese goods.
