Un concierto para mi absolutamente desconocido. No creo haberlo oído nunca antes. Pero el 1 y el 2 son tan avasallantes que han ocultado este, que sin duda es menor

Bufalini's arrangement works quite well. If I didn't know this was constructed from sketches I'll bet even the experts might be fooled into believed this was the genuine article. Unfortunately, Doležel slows the tempo of the 1st movement down to the point it drags. I don't like breakneck speeds like Serkin's but neither do I like Mendelssohn played at a snail's pace. Prosseda gets just the right tempo and he's the one that premiered the concerto. This should rank right up their with the No's 1 and 2 in terms of quality and I hope it finds its way into the repertoire although I knows purists will scream, "Foul!"

Dear JJ Townley, this is not my arrangement, which is the one you have heard in the Prosseda-Chailly Decca recording, and was commissioned to me by Mr. Prosseda himself; I think this one should be by Larry Todd.

Prosseda narrates episodes in the Lezioni di Musica podcast series on RAI Italian radio, and has been busy during Covid doing live pedagogy from his home on Instagram. Very sharp guy.

Only that it is an arrangement of sketches left unfinished at the time of Mendelssohn's death to create this concerto, listed as No 3, Op. Posthumous. I don't know if the composer was actually working on it when he died or simply lost interest in it along the way; I suspect the latter, because the work, though it has some fine moments, seems pedestrian compared to the established Mendelssohn canon. To me, the slow movement is more convincing whereas the opening movement has little of the dash, exhilaration, and momentum I expect from a Mendelssohn first movement in quick tempo.

Who would have thunk there was another Mendelssohn Piano Concerto out there? Amazing! In all honesty it should be listed Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy/Bufalini- Piano Concerto No. 3. Whoops! It is only one movement which gives a feeling of incompleteness. All-in-all, it is not successful because while what is written is interesting, it doesn't measure up to a true piano concerto nor a complete Mendelssohn creation. It seems to meander and unlike Mendelssohn wont, it just seems to drift away. How about giving it another name. It is just not a true piano concerto. How about "Concertino"?
lol, ya, I really want to see the typewrite/keyboard, I do!!!!

Nonsense. Practically all concert pianists play from memory. I played the Mendelssohn Concerto No. 1 with the Columbus Symphony when I was still in high school and did it all from memory.
