This is the first time in my 70 years of loving Felix Mendelssohn that I've become aware of this reconstructed work of such awesome and breathtaking beauty! Having held sway over both the other two piano concerti before I became cursed with severe peripheral neuropathy, the frustration in my inability to attempt additional supremacy over this aesthetic is titanic! Fault the regeneration as bombastic or even Brahmsian, one cannot fail to identify the Mendelssohnian spirit, style and temperament throughout this masterpiece. Thank you so much, Archie Castle, for opening my aging ears to this bountiful and thrilling (re)creation!
@willwyche20645 жыл бұрын
@@ArchieCastle Notwithstanding both the physical pain and mental anguish consequential to this incurable disease that numbs and swells both my hands and feet, I may just indulge myself with the $45.50 purchase of the reconstructed score. I hope such action will allow me to follow along with the idiosyncratic beauty of this great composer's creation and not make me think too much of what could have been.

Defies words, so much beauty of inspiration of melodic lines. One would love the third movement to go on a few more pages/minutes, but the bright spirited effervescence is a wonder conclusion to the austere first movement.
@mrbrianmccarthy Жыл бұрын
The first two movements are better than any of his other Piano concerto movements. The 3rd mvt is disappointing, but it was never finished by felix, so my guess is that is why its so inferior to the first 2. BTW---this concerto was dropped and parts of it were mined and used in the violin concerto(Which was also in E minor)

Grazie.

One of my favourite piano concertos - especially the final part of the first movement is breathtaking! But please tell me, where does the last movement come from? Mendelssohn didn't sketch a 3rd movement. Is it adapted from some chamber music work by him?
@loivo57074 жыл бұрын
Agreed, the first movement is wonderful! Mendelssohn actually did sketch a 3rd movement, but just a few bars of two of the themes. imslp.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_in_E_minor%2C_MWV_O_13_(Mendelssohn%2C_Felix)

The most underrated composer of all time!!!! Damn Nazis and Richard Wagner "jewed" him over. (I mean that in the most non-obscene way possible.) Anyway, thank you times infinity for uploading this majestic piano concerto! The imagery it evokes in the first movement involves him slaying Satan ~ having to play the game of life in which to attain such a victory. The second movement evokes imagery of ballroom dancing in God's Holy Palace; as consequential of having slayed Satan. Ooooh sweet victory at last! (At least for now, that is...)

Can you imagine if Herr Bruckner would have conceived of a piano concerto? After the first performance, put that poor piano into the recycle pit.
