Great review! Comparing this to the Vario PS, I notice missed opportunities on Ortlieb's part. While I greatly prefer the conversion method from pannier to backpack and it performs well, it still feels lacking. For one, it only has a crappy fabric handle (which is narrower than on the old Velocity), and I worry that even if I attach a rubber grip to it, it might get in the way as it attaches right onto the top of the shoulder straps. The Valkental handle on the other hand seems to attach further up, more directly above the bag's centre of gravity. This also has two bottle holders whereas the Ortlieb has one, limited in part by the way the flap folds round one side of the bag. The Ortlieb does seem more sturdy, but still. It lacks the same multi-functionality as this. Being able to this as a shoulder bag just by hooking on the strap is such a simple yet useful thing. I just wonder why the Ortlieb doesn't come with the loops. They can be used for hanging other things as well. Now, Ortlieb is quite modular and it may be possible to replace the bottom plastic 'foot' on the pannier side with one from Ortlieb's dedicated pannier lines, which can be used with shoulder straps. But this requires extra time, effort, and cost, and you'd have to store the strap when not in use (and it's a bit of a pain to attach, not as simple as just hooking up some carabiners). And it may not work. Additionally, the Ortlieb has only a few small reflectors, one of which gets obscured by the flap when in backpack mode and another whenever using a bottle in the bottle pocket. Why they didn't think to move the reflectors I simply don't know. And it's a shame that they don't offer it in the ultra-reflective grey. If it's because of waterproofing concerns, they could simply leave the main bag the same and colour the flap, which would still provide more than enough visibility. I'd also appreciate extra attachment loops for lights and things, on the Ortlieb as well as the Valkental. On a few other notes, I like how the Valkental has straps to secure bottles on the outside of the bag. Helps with peace of mind. And those pockets can also just be used as pockets for small items. I'll have to see what I can do to improve the Vario PS. It's still a great bag, and the fact that I can add things on modularly such as a waist strap (canalised from my old Velocity) is appreicated. Another thing that I would enjoy on both which I've seen on Chrome(?) bags is handles inside the bag on the sides near the end of the roll-top, for use almost like a shopping bag. A simple but really useful function imo. I'm kinda just rambling now, but it seems like for all the great bike bags out there, they all have glaring issues. None of them seem to tick all of the boxes for me, and lack simple and straightforward functions I wish they would have included. There's yet to be a bag I've looked at and thought: it's perfect - it does everything, and I HAVE to have it. It's always making the tough choice between two or three good (if flawed) bags with different pros and cons, and weighing which will work best/annoy me least. Although I guess it's easy to critique these bags after the fact.

Valkental scheint einiges richtig zu machen, jedenfalls was die Vermarktung der Taschen angeht. Allerding kann ich den Hype nicht nachvollziehen. Ich habe die gleiche Tasche, auch als voll Reflektierende, und es war ein absoluter Fehlkauf. Schlechte Verarbeitung (schwarze Nähte außen sichtbar und sie sehen aus, als platzten demnächst die Nähte. Bei voller Beladung ist es kaum möglich in die Rucksackfunktion zu verwandeln, da das Gerollte viel Platz braucht und das Innenleben, also die Beladung, hoch geschoben werden muss. Es passt auch zu wenig Inhalt hinein, auch weil die Wände zu dick sind, dabei aber trotzdem "schwabbelig". Im unteren Träger des Gepäckträgers eingehängt, schleift sie bei mit an der Scheibenbremse, weil alles zu labberig ist, oben eingehängt, steht sie zu weit hoch, so dass ein zusätzlicher Korb z. B. zum Einkaufen nicht mehr möglich ist. Das alles ist bei Ortlieb oder Vaude nicht so. Bei mir keine Experimente mehr. Wer eine Valkental 3 in 2 pro voll reflektierend kaufen möchte (2 mal genutzt) gerne. Wäre froh wenn ich sie los wäre. Ach, ja wasserdicht ist sie auch nicht, wie auch bei außen voll sichtbaren Nähten.

Ich finde den Ortlieb Vario PS besser weil das umklappen zum Rucksack 🎒 schneller geht. #unbezahltewerbung

Sehe ich auch so. Habe den direkten Vergleich und die Valkental war bei mir ein glatter Fehlkauf, auch was die Verarbeitung angeht. Voll sichtbare Nähte aussen, die aussehen als würden sie demnächst reißen, nicht wasserdicht (voll reflektierend) etc. Die Videos und den Hype über Valkental kann ich im übrigen auch nicht mehr ertragen.
